    60 - 90 mins max.

5-10 minutes warm up and I'm at my working weight.. Sauna, shower - go home.

    0 mins cardio
    0 mins warm up
50-120 mins weights, somewhere in there but those would be the upper and lower limits
    0 mins warm down

I'm absurdly lazy and faff about for ages between things like squats. My rest breaks are totally unacceptable at times.

If I was going to do cardio I'd do it on a seperate day, maybe 25-35 minutes.

2.5 hrs weight training twice a week. Much of that that 2.5 hrs is spent sitting around yabbering / recovering.

40 mins cardio and about 20 mins lifting weights...Usually in and out of the gym pretty quickly...

Since i work out at home i usually warm up while getting stuff together in the house. A bit of stretching, skipping and a few quick sets at weight increments for the first compound movement i do. Probably takes around 10 minutes in total.

Then my actual workouts are usually done in 25-30 minutes. I only do 2 or 3 movements each session and each one would take around the 10 minutes mark.

On days i do cardio i may be a little longer as sometimes i do set times on the crosstrainer or on the heavy bag etc.

metcon days - less than 30mins. At times less than 15mins

Weights or cardio days - 45-60mins

Alternate cardio days for about an hour and weights days for about 30 mins plus 10 mins warm and usually a run for about 20 mins after.

    15 min Dynamic Stretch
    60m - 45min lifting (depends on session)
    15 min Static Stretch

I do a warmup jog TO the gym (about 1km).
Then i do a 10 min interval run,
then 30 mins of body weight work/free weights/core work.

Short and sweet- little and often. i find if i only spend about 45 mins there, i cope better and go more often.
If i force myself to do 90mins, i get a bit allergic and go less often. Took me yrs to twig that one!

    5 mins warm up.

    55 mins lifting.

30 talking **** unfortunately. My downfall to a quick session.

I'm lazy so I count my 3km cycle to the gym as my warm up. If I drive over then I'll do 5 mins max on the rowing machine!

    60 - 90 mins weights

    5 - 10 mins stretching

Steam, sauna, shower, protein shake and head off!

    Total: 80 - 120mins

Train at home, so no ****e talking or waiting around. A set takes it out of me though so I rest quite a bit. Takes around 50/60 minutes though including working and warm up sets. Gonna start doing metcons later on in the day too. So I guess that'll be around 20/30 minutes.

Currently 55-60 minutes, 45 of which are spent recovering!

    60 minutes talking/listening
    10 minutes warming up
    90 minutes training

About 90/100 mins per workout for me, slightly longer on conditioning days... the extra time spent lying down afterwards.

The bitter pill of redundancy was made a bit easier to swallow when I realised I'd have all of January free to spend in IP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 272 ✭✭Loopie

Generally, 45-60 minutes in a cardio class (spinning or step aerobics) then about 30 minutes in the gym on the cross trainer and then a few weights. By the time I get to the weights I'm dying and excited at the prospect of going...

Circa 2 hours 30 minutes four times a week, and about 1 hour 30 mins after football training twice a week...

between 45 mins and 1 hour depending on how much time I have. After reading wendlers 5/3/1 book it occured to me that the law of deminishing returns very much applies to most people in the gym (excluding those on the 2 hr powerlifting programmes), generally you get much more from your say 1st 20 mins than the last 20 and a long session might only be slightly more effective than a shorter one.
Obviously theres exceptions but Im a big fan get in do it get out....... that said, last Wed I spent 2 hrs testing 1rm maxs and playing with fat grips

Yeah I'm pretty fortunate. I actually get paid money to lift weights.

The old dudes and the perverts are great payers!!

EDIT: I should probably answer that properly...

I'd annual leave to take from work that I couldn't carry forward so I took all this week off. Decided to train 2x per day for sh!ts and giggles to see what happens. Surviving so far. Just got tomorrow to get thru!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

    Stretching 5 minutes
    Walk/run like hell/walk/run like hell/walk/etc 10ish minutes
Weights... about 25-30 minutes. Have a routine, arms usually feel tired after said routine, so I assume it's enough.
    Shower.

Asked someone about the "cool down" thing, and was told I didn't do enough to need a "cool down" period, so meh.

Didn't know whether you were ****ing me or some gym-rentboys craze had reared its head.

That's pretty hardcore. You're gonna have all teh musclez. Word of warning though, I heard if you get too much your skeleton can't support them. True story.

Once I was delivering and not signing for goods received, I'm open to all offers.

I actually have ALL the muscles already. But I stopped traiing for a couple of days and they turned to fat. So now I'm tryna get re-swole in 4 hours.

Usually about 90 mins on conditioning days and 2+ hours on Strength days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,027 ✭✭✭Lantus

less is defo more when it comes to resistance training. Typically I'm around 45-50 mins 5 times a week but this is about to get chopped to 4 session a week at 35-45mins. Plus cardio on 2-3 days at whatever it takes.

You dont need to spend a long time in the gym to get results. The mistake most people make is going over an hour for any form of strength training.

No, you don't, but sometimes you should.

I sometimes spend over 30mins working on my deadlift or squat, because I like to get coached through it so that I can improve.

If anything, true strength training should keep you in the gym longer than anything else.

Following this thread has been interesting. Question for weight lifters out there. How long should you spend lifting weights(talking DL, squats, bench, shoulder press etc.)?

I always thought that you should spend about 30-40mins lifting weights and have followed suit.

I've always gone with the 'as long as I need' rule. It'll vary depending on what your doing and why but I've never been less successful by spending more time in the gym. On days where I only do 45 mins, I make it a good tough 45 mins. Some days I feel I need to spend more time on one thing or another so I spend the time. I've heard the hour thing, but like so many of these 'everybody says/common knowledge' rules... they can't apply to all individuals. What works for one person won't for another. Obviously, there will be folks here who know better than me but I can't see a problem doing more in the gym if you feel you can/need to.
