Painful callouses doing pull ups

    Hey guys,

I find that when I am doing pull ups, my calluses get pinched on the palm of my hand and makes pull ups incredibly sore to do. I could manage more but usually have to stop as calluses get too sore. When I come down it's really painful to actually open my hand flat again.

Would wearing gloves help this? Am I doing anything wrong with my grip to cause this pinching or is it just a simple case of having sissy hands?!!! :(

Any advice would help me out big time.

Cut then off or file then down, it's just extra skin you don't need.

Don't hold the bar in the middle of your hand, hold it at the top of your palm just below your fingers. It makes things more difficult but it saves my hands. You could also try gymnastic grips or tape grips

Well is there anything I can do to prevent these from forming, as the skin at top of my palm below my fingers are getting pinched between the bar when doing a pull up, causing a lot of pain and have to come down from the bar.

Is my best option just to wear gloves to prevent this? I thought there might be something I can change grip wise.

    Thanks for your feedback

I hadn't seen this before I replied. Thanks.

So I would be gripping the bar more with my fingers than the actual palm of my hand?

Try a neutral grip pull up

Slightly. I do the same. I find that my initial grip causes the pain you experience but I then shift my hand to grip less with the palm / more with the fingers.

Op did you try using a thumbless grip for pullups? It cuts down on pinching too much skin and it also helps you imagine using your arms as hooks so you can let your back to do most of the work.

Cheers guys, I will try both of these grips when I'm doing pull ups next. Some great advice.
