Although I am aware of some peoples opinion on Brian Guckian on these things, I believe his Northern Ireland Network Enhancement plan is vital and one of the most obvious gaps in the Irish Rail Network (OK - it's in Northern Ireland if we're being pedantic).

Not only could it serve those from Omagh and Strabane commuting into Derry or Belfast, But it could also serve travellers from Derry, Strabane, Omagh and Letterkenny wishing to travel to Dublin.

Don't worry, I'm under no illusions that it would. I remember reading somewhere pre-recession that they envisaged it by 2050!? Truly ridiculous!

    If I may say this.

Drawing lines on maps is easy. Drafting plans to fill in gaps on the rail network is also easy. Devising plans to reboot the rail network can be done by a well educated Secondary school student. What's not easy is drafting rail plans that take account of reality. A reality that's based on the economic and political climate and more importantly the development of road transport. Brian Guckian (as hard working and honourable as he may be) has absolutely no appreciation of the reality in a country like Ireland. Even if we were back at 2006 revenue levels, we still couldn't afford the stuff he comes up with. Brian needs to face the fact that what was shut down and torn up took many years and a lot of money to build in the first place. It takes more than a proactive establishment and a brief economic boom to replicate a climate whereby his suggestions are possible.
