Seems no one here seems to give a damn. Petrol prices are now almost back up to their 2008 peak of 1.45. What a scam, seems like the 5c carbon tax every six months starts to add up, eh?

"ah, sure it is only two euros on a tank" Death by a thousand cuts, pal.

(Carbon tax to prevent global warming, while it freezes at -7 outside, classic scam).

    You're right you know.

In response to this ridiculous price of fuel I'm going to do 3 things.

1.) Start my own Oil company and produce my own fuel. That should be reasonable to do.

2.) Until I can produce enough fuel for my usage, I'm not going to drive anywhere. This has the downside that I can't get to work, will lose my job and end up homeless an pennyless. But at least the b@stards aren't getting my income tax (score 2 to the little man).

3.) I'm also goint to pointlessly rant about this on the Internetz.

Why? What do you do? Fill your tank and give the two fingers to the security camera and drive away?

Here is one thing i do, I ask the little prick for a receipt, seems that nowadays handing over a ton does not even deserve a receipt. But then again you can be sure the little prick is selling the receipt to a local business man to claim back the VAT.

    Ever noticed that?

Why are you calling the person working at the till a prick? Nine times out of ten they only work there part time and dont set the prices.

I don't always use that word, however the person is being sly by pocketing the receipt.

Just because they don't give you a reciept you think they keep it for themselves?

But that's fraud, having the original is not. You get the point?

Petrol is only half the problem, was in the tax office in Ballymun yesterday paying the car tax and there was nobody in the place! I think people are parking the cars up and walking and using public transport, too bloody expensive to drive! Good for my business if people decide to do more walking and running tho :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭hi_im_fil

So are you saying that the person on the till is keeping as many reciepts as they can (which would amount to thousands of euro over one shift) so they can make a bit of extra money?

You might be able to say oh this and that about a car,i watch the gauge, before other day 20 euro filled half tank now it doesn't.It only fills to what it would be if you had previously put in 10 euro. And that is a damn right huge hike.

I have noticed a few stations coming down in price, not much but cheapest I've seen is €1.40cpl from €1.44cpl last week. I reckon this will be short lived with the renewed cold spell.

Question what would happen if all abandoned their cars and stopped driving altogether? Paying nothing for petrol and nothing for tax on car.No more NCT's etc...

I facepalm everytime someone posts that crap: its motor tax not road tax. Everybody know's what is meant when someone says road tax and in all honesty it is road tax. Its a tax which you must pay to drive a car on the road, technically it can be argued its motor tax but making that statement everytime someone mentions road tax is just acting the clown.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,857 ✭✭✭langdang

Alright, I've just been a smartarse so far - but, we are not in fact the worst for petrol prices in the EU. It was about 1.45 when I was in Portugal during the summer, when we were still sub 1.30. Now, maybe they have less tax and VRT but thats a different argument...

Let's face it, abandoning cars is not an option - it's not like there's decent public transport outside of dublin... (Portugal seems to have excellent public transport despite also being a bit of a basket case)

Abandon you cars, stop buying alcohol and cigs.
Irish state would be broke in a week.
Or not, your income tax would simply be put up to 90%.
One way or another, you're getting fcuked.

I understand your point, that the difference in the two words is pedantic.

However, the use of the word "road tax" as opposed to motor tax wrongly implies that your taxes are into some magical ringfenced tax haven to be used solely for the upkeep of the roads. Motor tax, on the other hand, implies that it is a tax on ownership (cars used solely on private property excepted) rather than on use. Subtle difference, but one which serves a purpsoe.

Road tax to me implies a tax which is paid to drive a car on the road rather than a tax for the upkeep of roads etc. If your car is not on the road then you dont pay the tax, hence why I think the term road tax fits fine. The term probably implies different things to different people no doubt.

Although I dont think a tax on car ownership is the right way to look at it either as you could have 10 cars parked up but not have to pay tax once they dont see the public road.

    fuel hasn't doubled in price...
its only gone from around 1.36 to 1.42 or so. You can't be getting only half of what you got a few weeks ago... somethings off there

    As for motor/road tax:
    Tolls = road tax :D

but if it was truly road tax then cyclists and horses and other non motor driven forms of transport should be subject to it, and thats why its important to make the distinction.
Its like fast lanes vs overtaking lane, nothing wrong per say in labelling it the fast lane, it just shows a lack of understanding of the proper term and reasons behind it.

Well i dont pay attention to them things as lucky i never have to use them :D
