Games and Childhood Memories (First game you ever played)

It's funny how thinking about the very first video games you played can bring back a lot of child hood memories...
So what I want to know is what were the very first games that you played when you were a child.

For me I was kinda late to the gaming world. I was born in 92 so I wasn't around for the arcade era. But I remember that as a child my first experiences of gaming was with a gameboy colour and my cousins PC.

For the game boy I would have to say that the first game that I played would have to be Pokemon Red and Blue whereas with the PC my first experiences were with Doom or GTA 1/2.

So tell me about you first experiences...?

My earliest childhood memories of gaming at home was playing Emelyn Hughes Soccer and a game called Driller something (maybe Killer, but that sounds too familiar) on an Amstrad (iirc, could be wrong on the format). It would of been around 87/88 I'd say and it was the good old tapes.... I envied people with a C64 anyway, I can remember that much! :)

    Superman on the Amiga 2600
Or esle Super knockout I think it was called...and some other skateboard game where you had to get to school on time :P...and crystal castles :)

Fond memories of 8 player Micro Machines for the megadrive, tournaments in Fifa International Soccer (94) and constant dying @ Battletoads and Contra for the NES too :)

Heh, I was in 5th year of Secondary school when Pokémon Blue came out but I still loved it.

The first game I ever played was either Treasure Island Dizzy or Horace goes Skiing on my cousins Commodore 64. I thought they were both amazing at the time.

Until I won a Master System I only ever got to play games at their house so I remember playing Sonic 1, Landstalker and Street Fighter there too. I was still young enough that I found Street Fighter scary because it was "violent" :P

I remember playing some police game on a friend's PC when I was young (would have been late 80s). Don't know what it was called but I do remember we were **** at it. I got a NES with Duck Hunt and Mario 1, great times! I remember Mario 3 coming out and had a t-shirt to match (Raccoon Mario of course). Probotector and California Games I used to play a lot.

I never owned a SNES/Mega Drive but I used to rent one occassionally from xtravision and my mate eventually got a SNES (but only got the two Mortal Kombat games for it). Street Fighter 2 was obviously a big hit with me. Mario, Zelda and F-Zero were class too.

In the arcades, I remember when Mortal Kombat first came out that I was squeamish of the blood, what a wimp I was! There was also a wireframe Star Wars game where you had to take out the Death Star, I put a lot of coins into that. The Simpsons and Turtles arcade games also took a lot of my pocket money and Alien 3: The Gun too.

Finally, I played Doom and Doom 2 until the cows came home on my PC.

While a cousin of ours had the original Nintendo, our first console [actually my brothers] was the Super Nintendo. The first game I played and passed was Super Mario World, followed immediately by The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

It seems losing my gaming virginity was more fun than the real thing :(

Now I feel really old lol
My first game was Space Invaders on the 'Bally Home Library Computer' hehe

Atari 2600 in a neighbours house. Probably River Raid or Exerion....

He got Exerion in the States, so the cartridge was a different shape.... probably one the earliest forms of region locking. Back in those days, the chip inside the cartridge was the same size, so he just broke the plastic housing and plugged the chip straight into the slot on the 2600.

Brother got a NES with the Zapper and the Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt cartridge one Xmas. I remember all the relatives coming over just so they could play it :pac:

Then the brother won an All-Ireland Nintendo competition which he won one of the first SNES machines with all the launch titles (F-Zero, Mario World, Rival Turf, Sim City, etc) with a further 17 games sent in the post a few months later

Those were fùckin' awesome years. :D

I an't remember the name of the game but it was a single screen game in the arcade were you controlled a knight. It was a bit like ghost n'goblins but it wasn't it was far simpler. After that it was probably contra in the arcades.

I think my earliest gaming momory has to the Commadore 64. I remember it would take ages to load up the tapes, then half the time they wouldn't work . Some games I remember playing on it are:

The Simpsons: Bart vs. The space Mutants

    Chuckie Egg

And of course, the great one, Terminator 2 (it was on a cartridge and played instantly :))

I also can remember having the Atari 2600 at some point (possibly before C64) and can remember games like Pit Fall & Barnstorming

We had a C64 when I was a nipper, the game that really stuck out for me was Dizzy Prince of the Yolk Folk, not the game itself, I never got far into it but the absolutely amazing music, still gives me chills

Note: volume is a bit high in this vid

    It's a good 'un.

Super Mario Bros. on the NES in the old Dunnes Stores in the Parkway SC in Limerick, where CPW is now. Dad bought it on the day, even though I wanted the version with Turtles!

terminator 2 on the commodore 64 i still smile thinking of that game:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,317 ✭✭✭gavmcg92

It's funny how, from reading the comments here, I get the opinion that no matter how ****e the first game you played was..... it still holds a kind of special place in your heart.
Like GTA2 was one of the first games that I played but there is no way that I could stand a game like it anymore (overhead view). Besides this I still remember spending hours of fun with my cousin seeing who could last the longest in that infamous tank! :D

First played on this lil fella.

    942953-database_hardware_gameboy01_super.jpg

    My first game(s) were.

    Megaman.

    mega_man_dr_wilys_revenge.png

    Solar Striker.

    1360.png

    And, of course, Tetris.

    Awesome games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Sadly enough, Skifree was the first thing I played. ****ing awesome at the time though. Wing Commander and Chuck Yeager's Air Combat were the two proper games though. Spent so much time on Chuck, I can still hear his little comments... "Ease up on the stick"...

I'm only including PC games since I never owned an Amstrad or Commodore, though I did play some games on my mates' ones.

First game I remember is boulderdash on, I think, the C64. Also had some karate game (you could punch through bricks) and a diabolical olympics game which had a 10,000 metre race were you had to push the joypad button for every step and, in multiplayer, could only track whoever was in first on the screen (ie if 2nd place was moving too slow, they would fall off the screen and you couldn't see them anymore). It was murder on the wrists :pac:.

That game (Treasure Island Dizzy) was absolutely infuriating lol.

My first memory is my dad buying me an Atari 2600 and playing Combat with him when I was around 5 :) I still remember the order of games I got for that machine in the early days...Space Invaders and Combat together, Superman, Vanguard, Missile Command, Centipede.

I still have it in working condition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

My cousin had an old Atari 2600 knocking around back in the late 80's. On wet summer days when we couldnt go outside, we'd spend ages playing Pong, Centipede, Missile Command amongst others. A record shop in our local town had stacks of old Atari games going for 5 quid each. Those were the days.

So I suppose I can say Pong was my first game, just 20 years after it was released. :D

First gaming memory was the loading screen of a Spiderman game on my older brother's Sinclair Spectrum (iirc)

The bastard never let me play it:mad:

Fondest memory will always be nearly ****ting myself after beating Crocomire in Super Metroid... I was already literally shaking after barely making it through (what seemed at the time to be ) a tough boss fight, then that happened:eek:
    Good times!

That was one of the scariest moments in any game I had as well. Brilliant. Pity going back to it the boss fight isn't as hard as the first time, was literally on my last reserve tank when that happened :)

Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O'Fun on the C64.
Still have it at home somewhere.

Pac-Man on the Atari around '88 is the earliest memory.

But the most exciting/vivid early memory is playing Mario Brothers for the first time on my brand new NES I got for my bday in '89.

I cordoned off the sittin room for me and a couple of my best friends to play while most people were in the kitchen for my birthday party haha

The first game I remember playing was Power Blasters on my friend's Vic-20 in 83. Didn't get my own computer until 84 and that was the dead on arrival Commodore 16:D

Yep, had my regular yearly playthrough earlier on in the year and I'm amazed that I ever even struggled with it at all... Don't think I even came close to losing 1 health tank on Croc this time around!
Even Ridley was a bit of a cakewalk, but I'll always remember him as being some kind of demonic superhard bastard:p

This is one of my very first consoles back when they shipped with only 1 game on them. No such thing as buying games to play on a console back then.

    I still have it too.

I think the first game I ever played was a football game on my friend's Sega Mega Drive.

First game I ever owned was Pandemonium for the old PS1. Loved it, even if I couldn't get past Level 4 :/ Have to say, after just seeing that it's on the US PSN, I'm mighty tempted to buy it
