    Hi all,

My younger brother is mad to get a weights bench for Xmas - he's only 12.

Plays a lot of rugby etc so is quite strong/fit.

Is there any really really light weights out there that he could use?

    I'm hoping that it's just a phase!

Google body weight routines or home exercise routines.

To go with the advice above I'd get him a chin up bar.

    Thanks lads...

I'm just afraid incase it caused long term damage if he gets into it too early

As far as i know you will not cause any damage by lifting heavy things at a young age.

I grew up thinking that weightlifting stunts your growth. I have recently found out that this is complete BS and i regret not getting into it sooner! >:(

My friend Fred Hahn has written a book on Strength Training for Kids - you can get it through his website -> http://www.strongkidshealthykids.com/overview.php

nah man ive been curling since ive been 12 but tell him to stay away from like bench press and squats until his coach tells him to start because he could get deformed

I'd say that would b highly unlikely. I'd rather have it the other way round if i were him so that he ACTUALLY gets strong and big all over instead of just getting big gunz.. If you look at most powerlifters/rugby players or any other sort of athletes u wud find that they started weight training early and it hasnt affected them in any negative way.
I wish i'd started weight training earlier as it would've benefited me in rugby, and i started lifting at 15

Nonsense. There is NO evidence that squats or bench cause deformation, and lots of evidence that appropriate strength exercise benefit children. The same rules apply as to adults: lift the weight that you can handle with perfect form.

Lifting weights pre- and during puberty increases bone density to the point where osteoporosis becomes statistically insignificant.

My initial reaction was to applaud your use of irony,
but then I realised that you appear to be serious.
