Okay so I just decided to post this to see what gear people have and what you gear you want.

I'm relatively new to the photography scene but I really want to take it up more seriously. Hoping to do a course in the new year.

I've built up a good little kit over the last few months (well i think it's good) but any advice would also be welcome on what sort of gear to be buying. Here's what i've got.....

Sony Alpha A100 ..................... Bought Off Adverts At Bargain Price
Sony 18mm - 75mm (kit lens)...... Came with camera
Fish Eye adaptor (for kit lens)...... Came with the camera also
Minolta 100mm - 300mm............. Also bought from adverts
Sony DAF 50mm f1.8.................. Bought Brand New From eBay
Large Sony Alpha Case............... Came with camera also
Small Sony Alpha Shoulder Case.... Bought Brand new from eBay

Next on the shopping list is either a decent flash or a battery grip with a remote

Flash is a good addition, it'll open up a whole new dimension to your shooting. Make sure to get triggers too, flash guns really need to be fired off camera.

    At present I have:

Nikon D200 [bought used through Gumtree]
    Nikon 50mm f/1.8 [Bought through adverts.ie]
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 [Also bought on adverts]
    Nikon 55-200mm VR [Bought new]
Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/3.5 Manual w/macro 1:2.2 [Bought through Photography Ireland/Equip for sale section]
    Yongnuo-460 [ebay]
4 channel wireless flash trigger PT-04+2 receivers T3E [ebay]
    Case-Logic SLR back-pack [bought new]
Cheap no-name wired remote shutter release [ebay]

A couple of ND filters for the 50mm, reverse macro rings and macro extension tubes, all also bought on ebay. Rocket blower, micro-fibre cloths and cleaning fluid bought in shops.

When you say off camera what exactly do you mean?? Like a separate stand for it???

I'm getting a new tripod for Christmas, Missus had to tell me as she caught me eyeing some up on adverts and ebay :D She says it's a real good one, we'll see :D The one I have atm is busted, it was a cheap Hama one, would not recommend! It was €30 in Argos and I can see why now. I also have a Light stand and shoot through umbrella ordered on Amazon.

I'll list the most notable stuff I suppose

    Olympus E-420 w/ 14-42 kit lens - Argos, new
    Canon 20D w/ 18-55 kit lens - Adverts.ie, used
    Canon 50mm 1.8 - eBay, new
    Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 - Adverts, used
Metz 48 AF-1 Flashgun for Olympus - eBay, new
    'O Ring' flashgun add-on - eBay, new
'Macro' Ring Light - eBay, new
    Gorillapod - eBay, new
Gorillapod swivel head - Joby.com, new
5 in 1 Circular Reflector - eBay, new (most recent item I received)
Yongnuo Flashgun for my Canon - eBay, new (still awaiting)

Would like to potentially invest in some cheapo studio lighting and backdrop early enough in the new year. Still reading into what I actually want/need though. Would also like to pick up a Canon 7D, but don't see that happening any time soon, unfortunately.

I know it sounds like I'm selling them but I don't have a shop, really! Those babies sell themselves! For a fraction of their canon counterparts and do the job, got a remote timer the other day to do some stary nights. 15 bucks! Brill

What.s the soligar <35mm like? I have a 50mm f1.8 and i love it, mainly use it for portraits

It's not bad, I'm not overly amazed by it. But it takes really decent snaps and only cost me €30

    I would love the f1.8 :(

It's a fantastic lens!!!!! I priced one in the camera stores around Dublin and it was €250 give or take, but I went onto eBay and got a brand new official Sony one for €115 (inc shipping). Had to pay €30 import tax to customs but it still worked out a great deal cheaper than in the shops, i'd highly reccomend getting one!!

No way, thats a great price. It's good then? Any photos from it?

Actually, best to PM me if you have, don't want to derail this thread :)

Yeah I couldnt believe the price, some second hand ones were going for more expensive prices online. So I snapped (non intentional pun) it up!!

I have some great shots from it but they're on my laptop at home, I'm in work now but I'll send ya a couple later on,

Sorry missed this first time around. Yeah, Off cam can mean holding the flash in your hand, so you can direct and bounce it any direction you like, or on a light or tripod stand. At the moment I'm using my old busted tripod for mine, and shooting hand held - using a strobe I'd usually use shutter speeds in around 1/200, so hand-held shooting is no bother. I have a light stand and shoot through umbrella on the way. I'll have a nice little set up for portraits at least then :)

I used to be very anti-flash, mainly because on-board flash is so poor. But it's a lot easier than you might think to get into off-cam strobes. You really just need a cheap third party flash unit and some cheap wireless triggers. The flash units come with a little stand, for placing on the ground or on a table or whatever. You don't need a stand right away, it's just handy have it up on one, especially if you want to get softboxes or umbrellas for it.

Do you need a specific attachment for the flash or can they mount to any tripod?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Thecageyone

Most units come with a little stand that will have the right thread sized connection for tripods. If you buy triggers too they also have the same thread and some will have fixtures to attach an umbrella too. I have the release plate from my old tripod attached to my flash so I can pop it on and off easily.
