If Social Network doesn't get a few wins, there's something wrong. Especially for Best Screenplay. It was wonderfully well written.

Never mind AIW - what about The Tourist I never knew that was a musical or comedy and yet it gets what 3 nods.

Mind you I heard it is so bad that is a laugh!!!!! I believe it did not set the box office alive in the US.

I am surprsied Leo Di Caprio missed out on a nod for Inception and/or Shutter Island. Thought Tom Hardy or Joseph Gordon Levitt may have had some shot of a supporting nod instead of Michael Douglas but suppose the whole fame of the charcter may have been an influence there.

I'm delighted for Mila Kunis, it just goes to show that some careers don't automatically go down the toilet once a popular tv show you've been a part of ends.

Also cool to see that Wahlberg got a Golden Globe nom too and it's not just Bale getting all the plaudits. After all, The Fighter has been Wahlberg's baby for years.

Not too cut up about Timberlake not getting a nom for best supporting actor, good performance alright, it didn't blow me away though. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was just watching Timberlake on screen. I think Garfield deserved the nod a head of him.

I'd be rooting for wins for Portman, Kunis, Franco/Wahlberg and Bale. Can't really choose a fav out of Inception, TSN, Black Swan and The Fighter for Best Film/Director.

Emma Stone for Easy A - woot!, think Social Network will clean up though.

Burlesque is actually a very good album, i wouldn't be surprised to see it win, it's box office is en route to make a profit from international sales.

My first impluse was the same, but I'll hold out until I've seen Black Swan, The Fighter and The King's Speech before making that call.

I thought Emma Stone was excellent in Easy A, very charming, kind of reminded me of Ellen page in Juno. Think Annette Benning will walk away with that one though.
Delighted for Jennifer Lawrence for Winters Bone, it was a really special performance. I always hate that most of the movies aren't out here by the time the nominations come out.
Cant wait to see Black Swan.

In fairness, she is still part of another popular tv show. Two if you include Robot Chicken.

Would like to see her do well if her performance in Black Swan is as good as is being said. She comes across as being very likeable in terms of personality, and she is very very very easy on the eye.

Family Guy don't count pal! :p You know what I mean though, not many tv stars go on to get nommed for Oscars. Even when you look at the more popular shows such as Buffy and The Sopranos, it seems that the highest you can get for most is another number on a popular TV show.

I have to admit I'm kind of pissed James Franco didn't win for Best Actor! And whats up with no awards going to Inception?? its all about politics with these awards!

I see Matt Damon presented De Niro his award surely Pesci, Pacino, Stiller or even Martin Scorsese would have been better. I know Damon was the De Niro's directed film The Good Shepherd but I would think someone else preferably Martin Scorsese would have been better.

I'm delighted with the wins for Bale and Leo for The Fighter.

Golden Globes have a poor track record recently (not surprising when you look at the sham of who the voters actually are). Although I do think Firth will get it. SAGs may give a better indication. I wouldn't be surprised if Black Swan gets a few noms but gets shut out from winning at the Oscars.

I agree with you somewhat, the Globes used to be a better indication of the Oscars but in past few years has kind of gone a bit downhill with some of it's award and nods.

BAFTA's are becoming a better indication in alot of categories.

After seeing The Social Network I disgaree that is deserves the best picture award much better films out there but given the society we live in and people cult like devotion to Facebook it is easy to see why HFPA would award it. Academy voters may be diffferent, have to see what 10 pictures are shortlisted.

Portman, Firth, Bale and Benning deserved their awards. Would have preferred to see Adams winning instead of Leo and Gyllenhaal instead of Giamatti, never even heard of his film.

The Social Network has been picking up a lot of awards lately so I'd it is a lock for best picture, screenplay and director (imo the film dont deserve it) at the Oscars.

I think Firth, Bale, Leo or Adams (not sure between them) and Portman are all locks also for the Oscars.

I expect the King's Speech to collect a few BAFTAs

Funny stuff alright, but something is a bit off about it, I don't think they were into it as much as they were letting on. Buscemi looked tense alright, Depp looked a bit bemused too.

Oh right, well for me it's going to be the first time EVER that my favourite film cleans up at the awards season which is kind of odd.

I can only see this as a good thing especially when you combine it with the success of Inception during the Summer.

De Niro's speech was truly cringeworthy. What the hell was up with the joke about the waiters and Javier Bardem being deported? His next film should be called 'Lead Balloon'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Christian Bales speech was very good (I'm on the mobile site so can't link) and I also really liked it when although not film When Jim Parsons got his for The Big Bang Theory it was presented by Kaley Cuoco (Penny in TBBT) you could genuinely see how happy she was calling him up. You don't see much of that.

I can respect RDJ for not toeing the line on this one, Gervais has every right to say what he says, but RDJ also has the right to give an honest opinion. I'm glad that he didn't plaster a fake grin on his face like so many others would have been doing.

Also, Bale being straight talking as usual. :pac:

^ always happens with Gervais, as Parsons said....they find it funny....but not when it's directed at them.

Apparently...he won't be invited back next year, yeah...and Tom Cruise isin't gay: http://www.popeater.com/2011/01/17/ricky-gervais-banned-golden-globes/

RDJ's comments about RG weren't to the press. They were his segue on stage during his award presentation and were not serious. Literally right after RG made the remarks. He then when on to not so subtly make a metaphor about screwing all the actresses up for best actress in a comedy/musical. Which might be beyond anything Gervais did last night.

I think Firth, Bale, Leo or Adams (not sure between them) and Portman are all locks also for the Oscars.

Firth is the closest thing to a lock there. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest come away empty. In fact one or two of those may have to sweat out even getting nominated. Remember at the AA's the acting noms are condensed to one category.

Nolan should have got best director for Inception.

Inception should also have got best picture although it doesnt stand out as much as best director.

No it should not have had. It is the biggest load of rubbish with loophole after loophole. Over hyped tripe just like the Dark Knight

I've only watched the Youtube clips, but I thought Gervais was brilliant. The Hugh Hefner joke was wicked. This kind of presenting probably wouldn't work at the Oscars, but the Golden Globes are a joke and everyone knows it. Americans probably aren't used to this kind of taking-the-piss humour and I can understand celebrities not being happy to be on the receiving end of his jokes, but he was genuinely funny - unlike Chris Rock at the Oscars a few years ago.

What did they expect when they hired Gervais anyway?
