I bought this for my wife for Xmas after seeing it on Ireland AM this morning (I can't afford an iPad right now). I'm surprised there's no thread for it here, as it's a pretty good deal.

    Is it a Resistive touchscreen?

    EDIT: Yep! :(

    From here:
    CPU: Rock 2808 ARM 11 600 MHz
    Memory: 256MB DDR2
LCD display: 7" 800x480 resistive touchscreen
    Storage: 2GB NAND
    Operating system: Android 2.1
    WiFi: 802.11 b/g
    Graphics output: HDMI
    Audio ports: Headphone out
    Extention Slot: MicroSD
    USB Ports: 1x Micro USB
3G: Optional via external USB dongle
Battery type: LI 1500 mAh 7.4V

Not a fan of resistive touchscreens at all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

I've never known Ireland AM to actually endorse a site...
But for a respectably spec'd tablet pc, that's the cheapest I've seen...

Plus, I don't know what a resistive screen is, so I doubt it will bother the Mrs... what does it mean?

    No flash on 2.1.

I think this tablet is way over priced - almost double what it should be IMHO.

Show me a better tablet pc for €90 - now that would be a bargain. :D

It won't be as responsive as a capacitive touchscreen (as on the iPad).

Have a look on any of the Chinese websites (DealX, Pandawill etc etc) and you will find 7" tablets for less than $100.

The cheaper units may not do everything that yours does but a 7" tablet with resistive screen + 256Mb RAM is not worth €180 IMHO.

But if you are happy with it, then thats all that really matters ;).

Definitely not a bargain to be fair. Spec wise is pretty similar to the range of low end models on the likes of DealExtreme that are about half the price. Maplin even had one very recently with virtually the exact same specifications for 124.99.

There doesn't seem to be a camera on either of these making them no good for skyping, and the Elonex looks lovely but the specs aren't as good!

Is there a functioning Skype app?

Last time I tried, there was only a beta app that didn't work.

Shirley you can USB a camera into it, no?

What kind of battery life have these got does anyone know?

Was going to go for that Back From The Future tablet but am having second thoughts. May try HMV in town or get my sis to bring one in from the states. What do you guys think?

The Archos 70 is also €179 in Xtra Vision and Peats.
I have the 101 and if you update it to 2.2, you get flash. 2.2 is a little laggy but changing the stock launcher it is quite good. A future update should sort out the bugs in 2.2.

Best thing about the Archos units is that the screen is capacitive (Like the IPAD).

Nope, like all computer peripherals, they need Drivers to run properly,

and you'll need Android OS drivers for your particular webcam in this case.

Since most companies do not make android drivers for their usb webcams,

you're pretty much relying on the hope, that some computer programmer makes them for you in his/her free time, and for your particular webcam, of which there are 1000s of types.

Maybe if android catches on the likes of Creative etc.. will make android drivers for their webcam,
but for now, it would be wise to buy one with an integrated webcam.

Guys, cheap Android tablets suck. They're cheap for a reason. Don't be fooled into thinking ANY of the devices mentioned in this thread are a bargain.

That's totally subjective in fairness - It depends on what you are expecting. If you were looking at buying an ipad to use the full rich functionality it offers, but you get one of these thinking you're saving yourself huge money, you're in for a shock. But if all you want is a simple basic tablet computer to browse the web and read e-books, this will be good value in the long run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭Feidhlim

Either way - there will be a flurry of new android tablets in Q1 and on top of that rumour has it that Apple will be refreshing the iPad in April next, which is in line with their yearly hardware refreshes.

In the long run? I don't think that's the case at all. These cheap tablets are simply filling the void before manufacturers that actually know how to make good hardware start producing in volume; much like Samsung are exploiting the lack of a premium Android tablet with their Galaxy Tab. This time next year they'll be an uncomfortable memory.

but don't start ranting and raving if customs sends you a nice bill either.
These are cheap nasty gadgets that are only good for surfing and even at that, will annoy you over time. Wait for decent releases in coming months and prices to drop

I'd guess in 12-18 months there will be a whole host of tablets that make the ZT-180 etc look like fisher price toys - and they will be cheap as chips too. However, I think I'm better off spending €130 now for something basic - and then get something properly decent in a years time when the market has matured a little. However I think spending €500 on an iPad now would be - for me anyway - nuts

    Well yeah.

    (a) iTunes
    (b) They'll release a new one soon anyway!

    A) I absolutely Hate iTunes. Hate it.
    2) It's apple, of course they will. They would never dream of releasing the right product first time - they limit the specs etc so they can have a 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen products and build hype and awareness at each stage. I have a love/hate relationship with Apple as a company - they are simply incredible at marketing their products - but I don't think the consumer gets the best form the way they do things.

    This sums it up perfectly:
