Interesting TV for sale in Lidl next Thursday with a specific mention of Irish DTT in the spec:

"Irish Digital Terrestial TV (DTT)- DTT was launched in Ireland in October 2010. All digital Irish standard and HD channels will be available come spring 2011. Service will be extended further over the following months. DTT will completely replace analogue TV in Ireland by 2012. DTT allows for a larger number of channels to be broadcast while using less space compared to analogue. DTT provides excellent video and audio quality. The MPEG4 format allows even HD channels and digital surround sound information to be broadcast in highest quality. It also provides interactive information services. "

It has lots of interesting features for a budget TV incl. LED, VGA and USB.

For those of us that might be thinking of buying a cheap TV this Christmas, can anyone say if there any reason to believe that this might not work for Irish DTT into the future? (I am presuming it doesnt have a saorview badge)

Should work, that's their second MPEG-4 tv. The previous one was a 32".

Fair play to Lidl, they have gone from 100% non compliant at the beginning of November to 100% compliant by Christmas.

Now if only Aldi were to cop themselves on, they are 100% NON compliant.

Sound quality is a regular thing now especially at the budget end of the market. There's simply no room for decent sized speakers nowadays! Might be worth looking at using a scart with audio breakout to feed sound to a good pair of active speakers, or to aux input on a stereo.

Even a headphone socket to an MP3/Ipod "boombox" :) (or HiFi) 3.5mm stereo jack cable. Has advantage that TV remote volume & mute work.

Good to see it worked out ok for you. I chickened out on getting one. Dont need to get another TV just yet.

Have you tried Soarview on it yet?

"Great minds think alike" and we won't finish it!!

I got A OXX Ipod boom box on my mantle piece and I ran a 5 metre RCA to the TV and boy what an improvement!

Lossy- Yes, main reason I bought it was for the Saorview and it works a treat and alongside my silvercrest free to air sat decoder I have all the stations I need without funding the Murdock empire!!

Got one of these last week, colour was all washed out and definition very poor (and my kids said the sound was thinny).
Lidl took it back no problem.
Surprised as all my sat gear is from them and its top quality for the price.

Their sat gear is basement level, generic boxes and dishes either too small or brackets too flimsy.

Maybe you are used to having colour turned up too high.
The sound is tinny as it is on most LCD & plasma. Screen too skinny. You need external amp and speakers on almost all skinny TVs now.

Are you comparing this to other LED TV's as there is a difference in picture from those backlit by LED and those that are not.

I do agree with you about the sound though but what should we expect for something thats less than 5 cm wide.

Its hard to have your cake and eat it these days but it'll do as my "Madira" for now!!

LED backlit or edge lit LCDs please.

LED TVs use real LEDs and don't have an LCD.

Huh? So which is this one?

    LED Backlit.
    Bought one this morning.
Won't get to set up until tomorrow or maybe later in the week though.

Having scanned through the various other retailer's websites I dont see any of them beating it - a few LCDs at close prices but some not full HD either; and this has VGA inputs so I can connect my laptop for DVD/computer use.

Have one. All DTT tv and Radio channels perfect. However MHEG 5 text is painfully slow to load with some pages taking over 20 seconds.

    Do they still have them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

The MHEG5 text seems quite fast on the LG 42LD450. Check your signal quality? (not level).

The Lidl in Childers Rd Limerick still had one or two 32". But I think Powercity cheaper or same price for Sony.

The very thin LED backlit LCDs are poor sound compared to fatter CFL backlit LCDs. Only the more expensive top of range double price LED backlights are better than CFL. The entry level price LED backlit are just skinny.

You will need a uhf type aerial, either a grouped type aerial depending on your area or a wideband type. Don't go to Maplins as they charge three times the price for their rubbish quality own brand tv aerials which are only suitable for attic use and would fall to bits after only a few years outside. :) You may get away with a small indoor aerial amplified on the window sill but the picture will be clearer from the attic or outside when mounted on a tall pole on the chimney or at the gable end if you are living in a house and not an apartment.

try all the remote buttons! should be as RTE NL is just using bog standard DVB.

BTW Aldi *** STILL *** selling incompatible TV this week with no disclaimer of "Digital" not working or Analogue Switch Off in 2012.

According to Lidl's advertising literature, Irish ASO is in less than 11 months!
