What kind of tyres do you have?

Out of curiosity, and following the various discussions on winter tyres, I was curious what tyres I have in terms of summer/all season/winter. On checking I have one car with summers the other unknown, but I assume also summers, as they are budget tyres. So was wondering, what kinda tyres do you have.

Look the make and model name then look up the manufacturers site.

planning on buying a new set of steel rims from breakers yard and putting on full winter or snow tyres so i can swap between tyres easily as the weather changes

In a way yes but have you heard of countries such as germany? And if you google their weather are we not going to have similar weather for most of this December to them? and is January not a colder month?

I was on all seasons last year, got winters for the same car this year, and I can tell you from personal experience that the difference is very real.

Yeah except only a few are buying them and tyres cost less than €500 and houses alot more. When we start paying €100k+ for our holiday cars i ll see your point.

This is a safety measure not a splurge, winter tyres wont make you the envy of the neighbours or appear rich or sexy

I dont know about that, some people here are going on about them so much you'd swear they're having an affair with them!!!

Are marketing ploys not made when companies have stock?

The only marketing ploy i've gotten is fast fit trying to convince me summer tyres will be grand because thats all they have in stock in my size.

When you say "we" who do you mean?

If you mean tyre places/shops I have to disagree. The guy I use is in Cabra cant for the life of me think of the name of the place but he's great. Will give you all the info you need to make a choice. Along with that you have the internet at hand to be armed with before making that choice as well with reviews etc..

If someone is just goin into a shop and saying here put on a set of the cheapest tyres or something along those lines well :rolleyes:

Having two sets, one summer one winter seems to be the best option. Summers are designed to work in the dry or wet (otherwise you probably wouldnt be alive), winters have a softer rubber compound and differing tread pattern which provides grip in low temperatures/snow/ice.

All seasons just have a blend of tread patterns to become an intermediate, but going from what I've heard - they fall short on both ends of the scale, becoming a fairly poor intermediate that you'd be better off not using.

Quite simply no - summer tyres are better in terms of breaking in the wet generally.

Ever used them Challengemaster??

In Dublin for example I've used them for the last week or so and last year. I'm finding them grand.

As I've said before it'd be a different story out the sticks but city centre wise really all people have to deal with is when they go off the main roads.

For me and according to the poll so far 16 others seem to think the same.

Probably the greatest MARKETING ploy in the history of MARKETING ,the tyre companies got onto God and got him to sort out weeks of snow,ice and a few months of cold temps,unbeknown to us though they had also secretly made summer tyres preform crap in winter - genius! Tie that in with a few brown envelopes to the powers that be in Germany,Austria. Switzerland etc to make winter tyres a legal requirement to give the MARKETING policy a bit of support and then the tyre companies are onto a winner! Never mind that while you are using your winter tyres you are not using your summer tyres and vice versa thus prolonging the life of both sets meaning that in face the tyre company gets no extra money from you! :rolleyes:

Continental SC2's all season. Great in the wet, great on the dry and not toooo bad on the snow (obviously at slow enough speeds).

Next car I will get winter tyres for it as well and rotate between the two during the year.

My winter tyres only went on a few days before the snow started, so temperatures have always been low. They've been better in all conditions, but dramatically so on snow & ice. FWIW they're Michelin Alpin A4s, the blurb says they're designed for wet, slushy roads rather than Nordic winters.

Not exactly, in parts of europe they have to use winter tyres or their car insurance is void.

it might well be but for the few days of snow and ice we are likely to get each winter, it simply is not worthwhile for most driivers (ie anyone not doing a high mileage)

Depends on the circumstances of the driver. Mine have paid for themselves already, the rest of this winter and the next four years are effectively free. Out of interest, did you think air conditioning was a big con when it first started to appear in cars here too?;)

I've got more practice with it, as I was using winter tyres for the last 11 years.

a) dry tarmac - both winter and summer behave very similar, with exception, when temeratures start to reach +15 or more, winter tyres becomes very slippery. I didn't really observed anything opposite. At -15 on summer tyres on dry tarmac i still had great grip the same as on winter tyres. Advertised 7 degrees boundary, where winter tyres are supposed to be better then summer is pure marketing thing, which is there to convience more people to buy winter tyres, even if they barely drive on snow or ice.

b) wet tarmac - All winter tyres that I had so far, were worse on wet tarmac then summer tyres.

c) snow - difference is huge towards winter tyres. For example, as on certaing snowy road I would call it safe to drive 30km/h on summer tyres, then I fell the same safe driving 90km/h on the same road on winter tyres. Speed is 3x bigger, but kinetic energy is 9x bigger. And the same braking force required to stop the car is 9x bigger. Even such a huge difference, winter tyres do the job. Driving on snowy roads on winter or summer tyres, is like heaven and hell.

d) ice - not big difference (you get crap grip on both) but winter tyres seems to be a small bit better.


Reassuming, in my opinion winter tyres are absolutely great on snow.
In ohter condition they are not that great.
If I didn't drive a lot on snow I wouldn't really bother buying winter tyres. I would just stay with all seasons.
But I do drive a lot on snowy road, and that's why I always use winter tyres during the winter.

Barely any EU country required winter tyres.

I didn't know any except from Scandinavian countries.

Up to recently, when in the end of last week, German autorities made them compulsory on roads with winter conditions.

In other words, if you are caught without winter tyres (or all season - whichever you prefer - just must have M+S marking) on a road covered in snow or ice, you might be penalised €40. In addition, if you cause an obstruction on the road because you don't have proper tyres and for example you get stuck, you might be penalized with €80.

Forget about any EU countries where insurance would be void, because of lack of winter tyres. Thats not the case.
