Looking to get dumbbells

I am looking to get dumbbells for home use. Where is the best place to buy and can I get some advice on what to get?

I have some at home from when I was younger but they are vinyl Argos ones and are way too light.

Would it be best to get Olympic dumbbell handles and then keep buying weights as I progress? What is a good weight to increase with?

If I get the Olympic handles, how do I know which weights fit on the bar? Is this standard / are there "Olympic weights"?

I have been googling it and saw people on another forum saying they wouldn't use a olympic dumbbell for any overhead lifts because the plates might slip off? Any cause for concern there?

    I was looking at these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alex-Olympic-Dumbell-Bar-Collars/dp/B001Q88NEA/ref=sr_1_9?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1291814438&sr=1-9
They seem to be a decent price.

My plan was to get olympic dumbbells and plates so the plates could be used on a barbell in the future but the only reason I am saying "olympic" is that it probably conforms to a certain size so it's easier to shop. Are all non-olympic plates/bars standard sizes or are they all different?

    EDIT:

Anyone ever notice when you Google "dumbell" it says:
Showing results for dumbbell. Search instead for dumbell

but if you google "olympic dumbbell" it says:
Showing results for olympic dumbells. Search instead for olympic dumbbells

I'm not mad on the Olympic DBs.
The concern I'd have is when collaring the weights you eliminate the resting them on your knees factor, the plates, when they get big, touching the floor during bent over rows and possibly hitting your shoulders during over head pressing!

If you can get around this you're flying!!
