I didn't take on this job myself, the car is my daily runner so a mistake could have proved costly. Basically my car was being tuned on Neptune, tuning software for Honda. Normally playing with the ignition timing will see an increase in power in these engines but it got me nothing at the top end, so on investigation one of my plugs was covered in oil. It looked like fresh oil so it pointed towards the valve stem oil seals.

    So the parts ordered were

    *OEM Valve Stem Oil Seals
    *BuddyClub Headgasket
    *ARP Bolts and Studs
    *Coolant
    *Oil
*Ordered Magnecor leads while I was at it
*These Aldi Caramel Biscuits, gorgeous yokes
    *Lots of Tea and Coffee

Also to go in was my own ITG Maxogen Airbox, I had been using the one from the Urban Per4mance track car until my own bracket came in

    76930_477190467824_744852824_5685225_6842829_n.jpg

There's how we started the day, around 10.30am

    77183_477190517824_744852824_5685226_2899599_n.jpg

The disassembly begins, my own duties for the day were taking snaps and making sure nobody's cup ran dry :)

    151074_477190697824_744852824_5685230_7404222_n.jpg

The two boys are fierce quick, the head was out of the car in roughly 40 minutes

My valves being cleaned up, they were caked in crap, really bad

    155977_477191822824_744852824_5685254_443094_n.jpg

My head on the bench awaiting it's cleaned up valves

    Before

    75159_477191952824_744852824_5685256_1219410_n.jpg

    After

    149939_477192067824_744852824_5685259_5428338_n.jpg

    Cleaned down a bit

    77144_477192302824_744852824_5685264_1240016_n.jpg

After it was cleaned down one of the mechanics spent quite some time reseating the valves, being very careful and methodical in his work. It's a fairly easy process just tedious and time consuming.

    The new gasket in place

    154714_477192632824_744852824_5685270_7939317_n.jpg

I made a decision not to skim the head, there were no HG issues prior to the head coming off and skimming would have limited my options when I'm going to be upping compression, I know skimming ups compression but I want to do it with pistons, I need to be up around 13:1
Anyway the head was checked and it was straight as an arrow

The ARP's going into place, the gasket used along with the ARP's are reusable items, so if the head comes off again they are absolutely fine to reuse unlike OEM parts

I know this isn't technically help/advice but I thought it might be appreciated :)

We haven't done a dyno run since the build, a bit of time to let it run in can do no harm and now the weather has played it's part. The car feels stronger on crossover in VTEC and is noticeably less smokey too. Hopefully I'll get my map sorted this side of Christmas. With the oil making it's way onto the plugs we had overfuelled to compensate so now I'm running pig rich. So as soon as I can it'll be plugged in and tuned properly

    Excellent post!

I forgot that Honda's have their timing belts on the wrong side too :P

Thanks :) It was an epic day, 11 hours in total but nothing was rushed

The pair of lads working on the car kept trying to remove my aircon when I wasn't looking.

I have a good theory on the aircon though, you see a TegR is perfectly balanced with an 85kg driver, I'm eh.... somewhat heavier than 85kg and the compressor for the aircon is on the opposite side of the car making it all balanced out again :D

If the valves took so long to grind in, they must have been badly worn, you should have took them to a machine shop to have them refaced and also reface the seatings ,it would be a better job and not cost a lot

It wasn't a case of bad wear, in fact there was very little wear, the lads were just meticulous about it :)

What figure are you hoping to get with the tune after the rebuild has settled in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,651 ✭✭✭Captain Slow IRL

Is that your old car Draffodx?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Is that your old car Draffodx?

There might be one or two bits of Draff's old car in there alright :D

@draff it all depends on where it's dyno'd :p before the rebuild and with the tune we couldn't fuel right due to the oil in the spark I hit 195 in Martin Tracey's place. In Urban I got 180, I'd like to hit mid 190's there though.

With the mods I'm seeing the power band widening in the middle though, at lower revs I'm producing far more HP, at 4500 RPM I was up 15brake

Best to keep it to Urbans to see the improvements from start to finish I reckon, 195 with incorrect fueling is a crazy figure! Mid 190 would be a class figure to hit, glad the car found a good home after being up for adoption for so long :D

Be interesting to get it to AI again at some stage to see the difference from when I had it.

Booked for the Map and Dyno run at 3.45 on Thursday, fingers crossed for good figures :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Will I ever get my tune? LOL

Well the last 3/4 days my poxy clutch has been giving up the ghost but we dynoed it anyway (new clutch going in Saturday) and as expected it was overfuelling like mad due to us trying to compensate before the head rebuild.

No blue smoke from her, it's a bit smokey in this vid but that's all fuel. Sorry but no sound for some reason :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Well the map is done at last :) New clutch went in today, in between cups of coffee and burger king :D

I made 186 and hit it consistently, I didn't get hung up too much on the top end figure because at 6000RPM I'm up 52BHP vs where I started which is an unreal figure for an NA 1.8 :D

I made bundles of torque too and I'm only 12ft/lbs off the Urban Race Car which is an absolute monster of a car

So off I went for a drive and my God the pull from the car is super, I'm honestly really chuffed with it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

She's hitting the track tomorrow, if my driving isn't really really awful I'll post a vid or two :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I changed the title of the thread, might as well use this thread to keep track of where I'm going with the car.

Out on the track yesterday it was excellent, the only thing that let it down in the morning session was the driver :o I gave it one small slap when I spun and caught my bumper on the rumple strip, got back to the pits and my indicator/sidelight cluster had come out of it's clip so I took it out altogether and off I went again.

Come the afternoon session things took a turn, the car had outperformed it's brakes and tyres, the fluid had boiled and the tyres were scrubbed to bits so I gad to take it a bit easier on it. Towards the end of the session though I had a good feel for the car and the track, the only thing I can do now is improve.

The mods made so far are

    Buddyclub balljoints
    Buddyclub camber arms
    Braided lines + Rebuilt calipers
    Uprated pads
    Buddyclub Catback
    N1 Header
    Tuned on Neptune
    ITG Maxogen airbox

What I need before the next visit to the track is better brake fluid and better pads, I'm going to go for Endless and I'll have to get trackday tyres onto a spare set of wheels

Have a look at Carbotech brakes ;) done a full day with absolutely no fade at all, match that with some motul 5.1 and you have a nice setup, then id be looking at braided lines, going out on track is expensive it makes you do mods you never even thought of :D ,

looked like you had fun bro any video?? Im dying to get back out, im trying to pull an end of year trip back to the ring for my 30th :D

Have the braided lines already, I've heard great things about Endless and drive a car with them and it has some stopping power

No vids unfortunately, my mate was supposed to be doing all that

You wont go wrong with endless Ive heard nothing but good about them, one thing id say they have over the carbotech is that ive heard they get up to operating temperature quicker so they are better for road, i have to keep reminding myself to heat mine up while im out on the roads.

What tyres were you running, and what ones are you planning on running next?

One of the lads has Endless pads and discs and doesn't really suffer any problems with heating them up, he reckons after 3/4 minutes with some gentle braking they're grand

I just ran with the T1R's, I'll be getting another set of them for the road but I'm officially on the hunt for another set of wheels but mine is a UKDM (5 stud) and I'll be sticking a set of 888's on them

T1Rs are so much fun around mondello, fun as in scaring the crap out of passengers :D though i did manage to pass an evo with mine  R888s are an amazing tyre, one of the best tyres ive used, what kinda prices are you getting they seem to be creeping up alot lately  Might try something different i the summer

New tyres on and definitely going Endless brakes, they'll be ordered on Monday :). Also a Buddyclub short shifter going in on Tuesday, she's getting an oil and filter change at the same time, best off after the trackday, should have done it sooner but I haven't had the time this week.

    - 13:1 Compression? Is that not too high on our ****e jungle juice?

I'll keep you posted about the 888's

As for the compression, each Maxol fill will require a bottle of Octane booster, cheap enough if you buy it the right way ;)

If they're not installed properly they do. A few cars that are regulars in Urban have BuddyClub headgaskets and are used without any issue. No problems with mine so far either. I did hear of a guy using a BuddyClub hg and having issues but he reused the original bolts

Got a rebuild on my distributor today. I didn't use Urban for this because they hadn't got the parts in stock. When it was finished I went on the Dyno again and have lost 20 brake. If the distributor doesn't go back on exactly the same way it came off then the ignition timing gets messed up so I have to go back on Neptune this Saturday. Never ever going to another garage ever again lol!

I gave the IACV a good clean this evening to make myself feel better, there has been a slight hunting in my idle this week, the cleaning has sorted it though

Hopefully Mick can take a look Saturday, my NCT is 13.40 on Saturday too

I got a bad vibe from the crowd doing the distributor, I really should have just walked out when he blamed my map, the car had this issue on the standard ECU so it ain't the map. He only blamed the map after he found out who did it too. I worked in sales for many years I was always told to 'never knock your competitor', reason being you look like an arrogant asshole and it's true. The guys I dealt with yesterday were not great, no professionalism and no interest. They didn't even ask me to take the car for a spin to check it. Wether it was a good job or not the customer service was terrible

High compression pistons, Buddyclub spec IV cams, adjustable pulleys, Buddyclub valves, dual valve springs and titanium retainers.

The standard ITR rod is more than good enough for this build. I will be doing shell barings though along with a baffled sump and change the oil pump while it's out. Few other things too

Ah she should break 200 anyway, similar builds have gotten from 205 to 220

The adjustable cam pulley allows the timing to be fiddled with in the eternal hunt for more power :D

    Them pulleys look nice:cool:
Over 200bhp from a 1.8 N/A now thats good, 116BHP per litre roughly!
Are you taking pictures of the process?
