Filling up before midnight?

So with the anticipated rise of 4c in petrol and 2c per litre of diesel today will you be rushing to the pump pre-midnight as a small bit of payback to the clowns in government?

Small sense of satisfaction perhaps, one of the few loopholes left LOL :D

4 cent on petrol!? Are you ****ing joking?

Cars already full anyway but ffs 4 cent is a bit much, surely they'd be better off hitting diesel.

what's the point.. they don't get you this way, they'll surely make it up some other way..

    Small bit of payback?

You will use more petrol waiting in a queue of cars to save €1

It's all part of their plan to turn drivers against each other as a diversionary tactic. :D

You're going to the wrong garages dude, have passed 3 today already and hardly a throwback to the oil crisis of the 70's.

Same as any other day. 8pm tonight might be a different story though.

50l tank of petrol is a saving of €2. €2 more tax FFS everytime you fill up!

I'll take the hit of €2 tonight rather than queuing like an idiot I think. :)

No, he's not joking. 4c on petrol, 2c on diesel.

That's 8c on the local pump in 2 days.

I'll say here what I just posted in to Joe Duffy:

    "Joe
In 2007 oil hit USD$141 a barrel, and and our pump prices hit €1.36/litre.

Today, oil is USD$90.34, and we’ve hit €1.40 a litre.

So, ignoring cars for a minute – all goods will now go up. All imports, delivery charges, exports (we have to ship them out by truck, remember……….)

So, we’ve made the country uncompetitive, at a stroke.

Bigger trouble is around the corner, though: what’s going to happen when oil goes back to USD$141 a barrel ?

This is a disaster, for industry, commerce and jobs.

Yet, Carry on Smoking!! This place is fugged !

Yes, but your talking about topping up before they hike it, so your only saving €2

So so glad my car is off the road, this is rape. Diesel should be whacked big style, a 318d pays half the tax a 1.4 petrol car does :o

Nearly every garage i passed today (great gas the exception), had already priced in about 3-5c. for example the esso on ballymun road had diesel at 1.30 when it was 1.27 yesterday.

At least i hope that was the budget hike. i paid 1.24 in malahide yesterday evening in comparison

What, you're only going to fill it once ? Are you putting the car off the road once that tank is used ?

This is €2 on every tank, ad nauseam.........

I think the (valid) point he's making is queuing for a pre-Budget topup is pointless as you'll only save around €2 (excluding what you burn queuing up). Of course your point it true.

    Erm no.

Diesel is a dirty engine, they have been pushed too far in modern cars and well, they are ****e. Leave em to the Trains and Trucks and Tractors.

You cant keep taxing petrol when diesel is paying **** all.

Any garage putting up the price at midnight (and in most cases, tomorrow or several days after) is ripping you off. Rise in excise is charged when it leaves the storage tanks at the ports, not at the pumps.

LOL, I know that - you can't get a punnet of chips for € anymore. The point I'm making is that the increase today affects everything using that horrible phrase 'going forward'......

...including the price of a punnet of chips ! :D

Oh, and yes, our two tanks ARE empty !!!! :p:p

So? there is almost 10c difference between the two, besides I think the car tax on diesels should be nailed, its insane the way the system is now. You can emit whatever you like as long as its not carbon. Loada ****e TBH. Incredible that a 3 series BMW can attract less tax than say a starlet.

Can claim the VAT back but not the duty.
Net amount can be claimed as a business expensive.

They can claim the VAT @21% anyway if VAT registered, not too well up on the rest but I'd imagine at least another 21%on tax relief, so on €1.30 a litre that's about 47cents back.

Just branding diesel cars ****e doesnt make them so.

You dont like them fair enough thats your opinion.

Personally I'd rather drive some diesels over petrol cars. Some of the modern engines are fantastic. The 1.9JTD engine (tax €614 per year btw) in my Alfa GT for example is savage. 150bhp from a diesel. Reliable and fast.

Anyway the difference in the diesel and petrol prices are very small. What a few cent? Hardly as you put it diesel "paying **** all"

Make diesel and petrol the same price. Simples.

Lastly the price of diesel and petrol arent the big issues of this budget lets be fair about it. Tax bands to mention one example will hit most people a hell of a lot harder its just they cant see it yet.

    True that.

As regards to diesel cars being ****e, I am of the opinion that most of them are bought for economic reasons rather than why people should buy cars IMO to make them feel happy.

Not the way it came out in your first statement.
But your probably right. Its a shame as well. I never thought I'd see so many BMW 5 series 2ltr diesels on the road.

Its good for the likes of entry level fords and that though. Instead of the horrible 1.4ltr entry focus I think the 1.6ltr diesel is the new entry level which is far better so there is a plus to it too.

... God that 1.4ltr petrol engine sucks. Couldnt move a micra never mind a focus!

I agree with you people should be buy a car for the engine and not the tax band. If I hadnt got the GT in 1.9ltr diesel I'd have tried to get the 3ltr V6. Problem is they're few and far between over here for the reasons we're discussing in the first place! More common in the UK.

Makes me sick, the future is sub 1.3 turbo engines, in light cars. Its sad that the days of owning fun cars in this country is over.

That is certainly foolish, but some people also appreciate the better mpg and driving characteristics of a diesel engine. In many cases the diesel is a better car, and as such is worth more.

Hang on - is that 4 cents due to an increase of duty or is it gormless's gang and the doubling in carbon tax?

If its only duty...will there be ANOTHER RAISE, when the carbon tax rate is doubled??

Claiming the VAT back and claiming "most of it" back are no where near the same thing. Businesses deduct their VAT spending from the VAT they collect and give revenue the balance. When working away from your normal base most folks claim expenses to reimburse them for their travel costs, accomodation and food. This money comes from the companies account, it's not claimed from the revenue :)

I'm self employed, when folks mention how I can claim x and y as an expense it's almost as if they reckon it's free money. I claim expenses from the money I earn, not some free fund bucket for self employed folk.
