I think mine was Born On The Fourth Of July. (It was either that or JFK, I can't remember)

And do people think they should bring back intermissions? For long movies (LoTR: Return of The King springs to mind) or for 3D movies to give the auld eyes a break.

(And, no, 1 year between each section of Lord of The Rings doesn't count :) )
    .... Or the movie Intermission

Went to a lot of movies in India where 3 hours is a normal duration so they'd pretty much all have an intermission to change the reels.

Last intermission I remember seeing in a cinema was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in the Savoy.

I actually think they should bring back the intermission for all films, regardless of length. Even in a 2 hour film, I think there's a fatigue that sets in during the last third. The audience needs a breather at the end of the second act. Dramatically that's when the film reaches the climax, before building back up to the final resolution.

I suspect the lack of intermission results in many directors rushing the 3rd act (if there even is one). For example, a lot of people moaned about how slow the third act of Casino Royale was, which I don't think would have been a issue for most people if there had been an intermission.

Silence of The Lambs back in 1991 in Limerick. The person I went with didn't want to go back in after the intermission because she was so scared by the film. Seems pretty tame now.

I think an intermission completely ruins the flow of a movie, the second time I saw Return of the King it was in a smaller screen and had an intermission, 15 mins away from the movie ruined the drama, and they stuck it right when the Rohirrim are about to charge the battlefield at Minas Tirith, so theres Theodan, rallying the troops with his rousing speech, they draw swords, every screams, camera pans up music climaxes....blank screen,

    INTERMISSION

whole audience groans, what a way to ruin one of the best parts of the movie.

I've never seen a movie with an intermission, grandpa. ;)

When I saw Return of the King, it had a notice specifically stating that there wouldn't be a break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭titan18

I think Kingdom of Heavens: Director Cut(aka the proper one) had an intermission.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,166 ✭✭✭enda1

On the other hand intermissions are not a bad idea. They give you the chance to explain to any women-folk with you, what's going on in the film.

Titanic. They allowed people to smoke in the lobby which I found surprising.

I was thinking Titanic, but actually on Halloween night; Psycho at the National Concert Hall. It was played with a live Orchestra and it was fantastic. It was so amazing hearing a score performed live. I'm 27; but the average age was much older (the crowd was mostly 40s-50s). Made me feel quite out of place. That and noticing that half-time drinks were served with the honor system (i.e. left unattended in a specific box) :pac:

When I was a kid me and my friends always went to the Classic because it had intermissions (probably contributed to my short attention span!). I was so pissed off when it closed and we had to resort to the Stella, jaysus that was an awful cinema.

"Philadelphia" at the Stella, Rathmines. Some broad even came out trying to sell us ice-creams from her tray. A throwback within a throwback there.

In the cinema, 'Return of the King'.

More recently though, I watched 2001 and that had an actual intermission.

First time watching it as well and I really liked it.

The 237 minute long Love Exposure, in the IFI last year.

I seen both the Che films in Latin America and they had intermissions. Seen the first in El salvador and the second in Colombia. Not sure if they had intermissions over here.

LOTR also, I saw it in some small cinema in Dublin, I can't remember which one though.

There was an intermission during Robin Hood. I'm talking about the 2010 version with Russell Crowe. I saw it in Santry in Dublin.

I was very surprised that it had one as it wasn't a very long film.

If it's poorly placed, as the one above was, then I agree, an intermission is a bad idea and ruins the flow of the film. You can be sure that Peter Jackson did not approve the intermission happening at that point.

As I said above, I think the ideal place for an intermission is the end of the second act, which in a traditional narrative is the climax of the film. In ROTK that would be after the battle of Pelennor Fields and before Sam rescues Frodo from the tower, which is about 2 hours into the film with an hour remaining.

Yup, last one for me too. Four hours pretty much demands a piss break. Wonderful film though, was talking about it with someone the other day and now have the urge to watch it again!

While I disagree with intermissions breaking the flow of the film, if there is a natural narrative pause in films that stretch the bodies capacity for fluid retention, then yes, break on I say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Mammy Ziedth (a decent film goer given her age) went to IIRC the sound of music in the cinema and didn't know about intermissions and so the film cut as the nanny runs away from the house and the mother thought that was the end of the film and left. It was YEARS later that she realised.

Anyway, for me I'd say it was titanic was the last one I saw. I agree that they are not needed and ruin the experience IMO.

I saw it there as well and thats the only time I ever watched a film with an intermission. I thought something was wrong when the lights came on and the film stopped.

Think Titanic was the last one I saw.

I really don't like them tbh. For me it just breaks up the flow of the movie

    Titanic maybe, can't really remember.

Haven't seen a film with a break in a long time.

Remember going to see Schindler's List in the cinema and there was an intermission in it where everyone just sat in silence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,493 ✭✭✭DazMarz

Never when I'm in the cinema...

But usually when watching DVD's or films with a few of my mates, there's an unofficial 'intermission' about every half an hour or so... so they can go outside and have a smoke and discuss the preceeding half hour's worth of action in the film! I don't mind it actually, despite being a 'non-smoking bastard' and all that... It's a good laugh at times, especially if the film is shíte...

Dont think I ever remember any intermissions apart from the very odd one as a kid in the 80's. Dont even recall Titanic or LOTR having one.

I haven't been to a film that had an intermission for years!! I think the last one might have been Titanic, or Pearl Harbour or maybe it was at one of the Rocky Horror Picture Show parties they used to have at the Classic Cinema before it shut down.

    Malcolm X in the Adelphi.

Pearl Harbor, complete waste of an evening.

The Ring. 2003, New Zealand, think it was more to do with the cinema's approach to showing films than the actual films themselves... it was in Cinema Paradiso, which has comfy couches and a car inside :)

Edit: Quote from their website: "This small classic movie theatre located in Wanaka is a real find - The best thing is, just like the good old days, there’s an intermission!"

I recently re-watched 'Heaven's Gate' and 'Gone With The Wind' both of which have intermissions with 'Intermission Music'.

On of the LOTR films, I think it was Two Towers, in Holland. I hated the intermissions they had there.

    Kingdom of Heaven: Directors cut

Watched it at home and didn't get around to returning for the second half until a week later... Didn't have a ****ing clue about what was going on!

They're necessary for 3 hour+ films in the cinema imo, but I'd rather not have them in the home releases...

I kinda liked the KOH-DC one actually. Gave the film a real epic feel. Afaik it's not on the Blu-ray though.

2001 still has an intermission on all home releases which I always found kinda curious considering that Kubrick didn't have intermissions on his later films. It seems to be another one of those mysterious "Stanley wanted it that way" type things that Warner Bros are unwilling to break. I love the Overture at the beginning though.

Same in Holland, or at least in the town I lived in "Wageningen', I saw a special screening of the wind that shook the barley and half way through they stopped the film so everyone could go get a cup of tea in the coffeeshop (not that kind of coffeeshop)

At the start of the movie, some old guy came out and talked about the film in dutch, hadn't a clue what he was saying.
