Raise awareness of Child abuse...

My god this fad on FB angered me..
so,my alternative status update instead of the one going around.
How about, instead of "raising awareness" and just putting up a cartoon pic and pretending to care, you actually went ahead and made a donation to the ISPCC?? Its a quick 2 minute 3 step process, and they take laser cards. Or just put up a cartoon pic and pretend that that helps too. Whichever.

My facebook has more cartoon characters now than the Disney channel, and they've changed their profile pics as well.

a bit of fun saying that its doing good, when its doing nothing. you can do both you know, donate AND put up a cartoon pic. nobody is saying you cant do that.

I agree it's stupid, I think they just wrote that because people would be more likely do it if they thought there was a cause. I just like the fact that I can put a cartoon character as my profile pic :) Everyone knows it won't do anything to prevent child abuse.

Btw: What have people put as their pic? (if they did it, that is)

Chances are the money being donated to these charities this christmas has gone up at least ten fold because of this facebook campaign.
    Advertising costs money too.

And if you're frowning upon people for helping advertise for a charity, why stop there? Surely throwing a couple of euro at them is nothing compared to donating your time and energy as a volunteer for children in need.

. You'd have to be naive to think that it actually is doing cpoious amounts of good for the cause. However, it's rasing awareness nonetheless. It's better having some awareness than no awareness at all.

I updated my status to this:

"Deactivate your FB profile for a week starting December 6th. The goal is to not see another stupid facebook craze for at least a week, to support the fight against Jesus Christ healing lepers and depriving them of a decent income! Copy and paste this to your status so everyone gets involved!! Show your solidarity with all the ex-lepers who are suffering because of some bloody do-gooder in sandals."

Child abuse is not funny. South park proved this flawlessly.

because people had no idea there was such a thing as child abuse. thankfully, we're all now "aware". Problem solved.

Apparently it was instigated by Paedophiles to lure kids into their trap but I don't buy it. Why would they need everyone to join in to attract a child with a cartoon pic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭Oranage2

Sure donating to the ISPCC is just funding fat salaries

Think it's a good idea. The woman's bra colour to raise breast cancer awareness worked last year. It raised awareness for the cause, therefore increased the likelyhood of getting funds and volunteers. Same goes for this. If you tell someone to give them money, the less likely they are of doing so or making excuses. If you raise awareness, it makes them think it was their idea.

    I've got Animaniacs! :D

    Child abuse is not funny..

I'm not suggesting that child abuse is funny. I'm suggesting that people enjoy the act of changing their profile picture to a cartoon. It's a fun thing to do and not everyone will do it for the cause, but some will. Having some do it is better than none doing it and promoting the cause is better than having no promotion at all.

Child abuse is not funny but the changing of pictures is more of a trend as oppsed to the advocating the awareness of child abuse. Obviosuly a trend on facebook is not going to be taken seriously by everyone.

Its nothing to do with child abuse. Same sort of thing happened a while ago; everyone was changing their statuses to colours (red, blue, etc), you posted the colour of your bra and this was meant to raise awareness for breast cancer or something along those lines.

Whoever starts these fads clearly realizes that there are a lot of gullible people out there, I knew it was nothing to do with child abuse but I put up a picture of Quagmire anyway :pac:

Why donate? How one earth will money stop child abuse? Throwing money at the ISPcc will not stop the physical and emotional mistreatment of children.

Though I agree with your sentiment, the facebook campaign is stupid.

Someone on my friends list posted this, then changed her pic back to her kids.:confused:

So to avoid paedos remove your pics of cartoons and put up pics of children, that'll learn em.

more money = more children getting an answer on the other end of the phone, more kids getting rehomed etc etc.

When i looked at the NSPCC's fanpage on fb yesterday it had about 5000 fans. This minute it has 90,439 fans. The NSPCC have said in their status update that "they did not originate the campaign but welcome it".

85,000+ fans in a day raises awareness in my book.

    How does that help?

Was there a lack of awareness of child abuse?

Its not something that people go around thinking about even though it's at the back of peoples minds. If this last few days gets just 100 people to donate to child abuse charities then it has been worthwhile no?

and if it had been done right, a lot more would donate. why do something half assed? this fad started without any reference to child abuse, it was just a fad. someone tagged on the child abuse thing to try get it to catch on. What I'm suggesting is actually give people the link to donate, and ask them to donate.

Don't be ridiculous. ISPCA/DSPCA/etc get zero funding from the government and rely entirely on volunteers and donations.

ISPCC/etc do get government funding, and pay their ceo's in excess of €100,000 a year.

I also changed mine to pedo bear. Dont no if that makes me ironic, funny, neither or both. None of my friends seem to know what it means and dont get the joke. So i've ended up laughing at myself which is a little sad.

    My facebook status:
"Today I was about to moleste the **** out of a six year old child, but then I logged into Facebook and saw that everyone had changed their profile pictures to cartoon characters. Suddenly my heart swelled with joy. My children shall be abused no more."

I know that's not really the point, but I like being facetious. Stupid campaign. Everything Zuroph has said on this thread makes sense. Listen to him.
