Druids Glen or Heath

The offer at Druids Glen sounds fantastic but what's their financial position? Any chance of them going belly up? I can't afford to wave goodbye to 2,600 big ones.

Is it worth the extra over the Heath? What are the additional benefits apart from the course itself?

    Have standards been maintained?

YOur only buying a membership for the year, their not going to close before the year is out if at all, so it's up to you to get as much value out of your fee for the year as you can.

played it 5 weeks ago,it was in great nick,i don't really get ya.
Forget about waving goodbye to yoour cash, next year with that deal they'll be fine,i know Greystones have already lost about 15 so far to the Glen.If i could get my hands on that cash i'd be all over it

Don't forget you get the gym with that deal and playing rights to the Heath and a 5 day membership for Adare Manor(to be confirmed)

OK guys, I know it's an old thread but didn't want to open a new one for 1 query.

Basically, I'm staying in Druids Glen this Wkend with the other half. I hoping to get a game of golf in with the brother in law and was wondering which is the better option, Glen or Heath.

I have played Heath once, but never Glen.
Im really looking at comparisons from a financial, course nic/quality and overall golfing experience.

    All opinions welcome.

    Thanks..

No contest, Druids Glen all the way, maybe my favourite course in Ireland

I'd say Glen is the overall better golfing experience provided the greens are in decent nick - both times I've played it they were in awful condition - it's billed as Augusta without the azaleas, very pretty and enjoyable experience from a look and feel point of view - not as hard going or muscular as the Heath(although I'm a big fan of the Heath)

I'm a member of the Heath which is a great course but no contest the Glen is better.

Course Nic is great on both and you should have no issues there. Heath was hollow tined last week so won't be fully recovered, not sure if Glen was done.

On the overall golfing experience, you would be best served on the Glen, there's some terrific holes on it and is an Irish open course so it's nice to play it for that alone, it's probably in the top 5 parklands in the country and in my opinion only behind Adare and Mount Julliet. You will enjoy the heath but for a once off stay u should go for the Glen.

Not sure what a round on each is at the moment, weekend price will obviously have a premium. Let me know what they're charging as I have Green Fee vouchers for the Glen that I am willing to sell at a fair price (i.e. less than what the Glen will try charge u)

Playing Druids Glen tomorrow. I rang and the greens were hollow tined on Tuesday 6th March. They won't be fully done I reckon unfortunately.

Druids Glen is a nice track, but a very over rated track in my opinion. Think it came 29th in the top 100 courses in Ireland and that might be about right.

I've played the Glen, and as a high handicapper it was awesome, very challenging. I tried shots I wouldn't normally go for, because you have to. Some came off, more didnt.

Suffice to say I ran out of balls at the 17th hole - prob lost 8 to 10 on the way 'round. I haven't played many other 'top 100' courses, but you'll enjoy it. I hope to play it again this year, really looking forward to it. Enjoy.

Thanks for the good replies guys.

Going to see what the brother in law wants but the Glen looks like it could be winning the battle. Only thing is, he is a member of Heath so will need to convince him otherwise.

    Q. Is there a reduction in green fees on the Glen if you are a member of Heath?

Redzah, thanks for the offer and I might take you up on it yet.

No probs Irish Bloke. I think your brother in law might be able to get the members guest rate for the 2 of u if he is a member of the heath. Enjoy

If you're in the heath i think you get gest rates in open compitions in the glen.

you also get four single vouchers for green fees of the glen as a member of the heath.

I think third in competitions is usually a two ball in the glen as well.

if you let me reference you ill split the reference fee in the heath :) (€150 each off membership!)

Any open days/scratch cups in either Druids Heath or Druids Glen? Have never played either course so hoping to get in a few rounds this season but not really interested in just paying green fees. Nothing showing on their website or the gui open fixtures page. Thanks

weekends usually have member/guest fourballs for 15 i think

Thanks, what's with Wicklow clubs and their fascination with open fourballs? I'm a member of another Wicklow club and often open competitions are fourballs which I can't understand and regrettable a subject I never brought up at this years AGM. Singles whether Stableford or Stroke are so much more versatile and enable a lone golfer to put his name down with fellow randomers while still playing a qualifying competition in the hopes of lowering their handicap.
Hopefully the Glen courses will have the odd open singles competition in play this year to play.

Played Druids Glen over the weekend. The greens have been cored & sanded. They were in pretty poor condition. They'll come good but not by this weekend, don't expect them to be perfect.

Two fairways have been dug up for drainage too. They've been filled in, but it looks like candy stripes of sand.

Rest of the course in fine condition.

+1 - Always a special place to go and play every once in a while. Feels great from the minute you enter the gates. A very fair course and a score can be posted but much more often than not it chews you up and spits you out.

Heath is good to go and really test your long game.

Played the Glen yesterday. Good track in fairness but still a wee bit behind Adare in my opinion. Greens still not running true, maybe another week or so and they'll be good. 37pts and birdied 12th and the 17th.

Ball stopped about an inch from the hole on the 12th, would've been a nice hole to have your first hole in one on mind!

2 nice holes to birdie too. The view back up to the tee box is class on the 12th.

Played there with my Dad about 4 years ago and he had a birdie of sorts on the 17th....ball hit a duck!

Are the 7th and 13th fairways fully in play? I played there a couple of weeks ago and they were out of action for drainage works. Apart from that it was in great nick.

    Played there last Sunday.
Both are fully in play, but still long strips of sand on them. Was fine on 13, but on 7 I caught the sand on the fly from the tee and lost all bounce and run off the drive
It was clean and place everywhere, and they said just to move onto the grass between the sand strips for those holes.

Played the Glen on Saturday... Best course Ive ever played IMO. Better then Adare.

If you hook the ball (right handed player) like me, then you are gonna struggle a bit.

13th with a hook is a nightmare, that was a blow out for me. 34pts off 16 wasnt great, but a thoroughly enjoyable experience...

34 in Druids sounds good to me. Anyone shooting to within a couple of their handicap there is shooting pretty handy IMO.

Yeah my favourite course. Would love to play it off the blues. Reckon I would do well to break 90 off the blues. Very well! Looks a totally different animal from back sticks.

I can't agree with this. Firstly neither are far superior to the other. As somebody who has played both Druids Glen regularly (as i am a member in druid heath) and Adare regularly (originally from Limerick), I believe that adare is the superior course. Not much between them in terms of maintenance etc. as you would expect but Adare is a better course in terms of design. I believe that Druids Glen has weak par 5's and some poor par 4's which are not present in Adare. The only thing that Druids Glen has over adare would be slightly better par 3's and even at that 11th and 16th in Adare are class.

Not much between them and both are class courses but i'd have to go along with golf digest and agree that Adare is the best parkland course in Ireland

Lol, u should have a read of the first line on my last post i.e. 'I can't agree with this'. I'm a firm believer in expressing my views Kid Charlemagne, entertaining while expressing my views is just a bonus for those who are privaleged enough to encounter me :D. Seriously though, Adare is better than Druids Glen IMO, both class courses though.

    Folks,
I know this thread is a year old, but rather than creating a new one, I thought seeing as my query relates to the thread, kinda, it would make sense to post here.

I know very little about golf, but am booking a round for my dad in Druids Glen for his birthday.

Just wondering if the Glen or Heath is a better choice? seems like the Glen
secondly, I am booking for him and a friend to play a round. But when I go to book a tee time it gives me options of 1, 2, 3 or 4 ball? what does this mean? and which is the option for two people playing the round together? thanks a mill

Glen is the better course. 2 ball is what you book for two people to play

Why not wait a few weeks for conditions to improve and get the most out of it? If you splashing out at the moment surely links courses would be better option?

Think the glen is fairly sloppy at the moment.

Heath isn't too bad with a few damp spots around!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,169 ✭✭✭blackwhite

Make sure to ring up in advance to check the conditions.

I played Druid's Heath three weeks ago having booked online. When we arrived into the clubhouse to pay we were informed that the back 9 was closed due to flooding, and offered a discounted green fee.
Whilst we enjoyed the front nine, I much prefer the back nine there, and would have gone elsewhere if I knew it was closed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,184 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Right, a happy compromise. Had 2 hours to spare.

Played front 9 there on Heath and playing Glen in am. Got around in 1hr 45 min, wrecked :o - basically half ran around.

Heath was in ok condition, Bunkers out of play - takes a good bit away from the course as is the main defence on the course. Well that and length.
The greens have been sanded too - but considering everything the front was in good condition. Except for the temporary hole 5.

Have to say the place has grown on me each time. Played the greens , the course is a different course from the whites and the further back stuff , is funny. course record is only 70 - By D Clarke. So long back there.

Was 5 over - played well - tee to green , found greens tricky, but always do there. Went for 2nd in 2 - that is the stupidest shot in golf. Or just me being stupid :p.

The 9th green must be the fastest in the country. In fact, I have been out in a wind and the greens are almost impossible how fast they are.

    Mid term is class :)

Adare is only 25quid to play? That seems very cheap

17th is faster in the right wind!!!

Going for 2nd in two is very very satisfying but still a 230yd shot from the bunker on the right!

@blackwhite back nine is open again, was fine on Sunday, played a GC match and it was fairly dry (only played as far as 13 mind you!!)

In fairness matt always respected your handicap around there.
was only 170 yards out. Just topped a 6 iron.
A problem since my swing has changed.

If just doesn't look like there is an easy lay up on right.

It is sort of a S/W for 2 nd shot.

How do yo play it ?

Depends on the drive to be honest. If the weather is good and I'm near the bunker in the right ill chance it. Because your way above the hole it's only a 3/4 iron in.

If I hit a bad drive I play to the left side of the fairway about 120 out where the grass bunker used to be.

Provides a good angle in with bail out beyond at the bunker if hit a bit thin.

Unfortunately there's no bail out short!! :-p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,184 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Unusual hole.

even at that. If i had hit my 6 iron as I should.

The greens are so fast would it hold it ?

You must have a pain with the bunker situation, or is it just the crazy weeks that are in it.
