When is this likely to be released?
I am thinking of going and getting an iPhone 4 but with an 18 month contract from 3 means I wont be able to upgrade as soon as the next best thing comes out (which annoys me :))

Which will equate to about the end of July 2011 in Ireland, assuming you get one in the first batch. Forget iPhone 5, if you were to get an iPhone 4 now on an 18 month contract, you'd be out of contract just in time for the iPhone 6, which will probably be a big jump, whereas the next one won't be too big a jump, maybe more memory and more pixels in the camera.

Will they not bring out a 4GS or something of the like rather than a 5?

??? Does it matter what they call it?

Well I took it that when they bring out a new number, the design changes. The first one was a big bulky thing, the 3G and 3GS looked the same, then the 4 is the new one.

If it's only going to be a 4GS or whatever, I wouldn't bother waiting for it

Man, I loved that design. Wish mine hadn't met it's smashy-smash demise...

3G to 3GS was arguably the biggest leap they made ! the boost in power changed the game!

iPhone 4 is another big step to be fair but I don't think people should be worried about the "S" label My prediction is for a true 4G network mode, 8 MP camera and the Fastest processor yet wether it is called 4GS or 5 means nothing.

The only reason the 3GS was called the 3GS was because the iPhone 2 was called the 3G, to signify the fact that it worked on 3G networks. The iPhone 3 was called the 3GS, not because there were only minor upgrades, but because the that was the handiest name to differentiate it from the iPhone 2 (3G) while getting the generation numbering back on track. The next phone will be the iPhone 5. They may try to be a little more original with the name they market it as, but they certainly won't call it a 4GS as that would throw off the generation numbering again. They'll either use the number 5, or drop numbers altogether.

Apparently one of the new features in the iphone5 will be the ability to use it to pay for items at a shop-you will just scan your screen through a barcode reader. No more cash or credit cards...

Insert 'mark of the beast' type accusations when ready....

ip5 what can it bring, more battery, more gigs for less $$ and a new chip with no holes to exploit for the jailbreak

    same ding dong,

not really much they can add to it now, the iPhone 4 is a beautiful phone, so why deprive yourself? If its just about a future statues symbol then I can kinda see your reasoning

The only possible upgrades I can see is a bigger hard drive, and maybe a 3d screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭Jakmeehan

The "S" in 3GS stands for speed, jobs said so himself when revealing it. That's why it's named that way. Not because it's not a significant upgrade from the 3G

NFC will probably make it in, since it's going to be a part of gingerbread.

There are no real 4G networks anywhere. There are plenty of 3.5G networks cropping up, but no where near enough to justify putting it into the 5. **** everything about the megapixel war, it's stupid and only feeds the ignorant. Dual core processor probably. And 4GS would be a stupid name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Don't think the iphone 5 would have too much over the 4..
I'd definitely say dual core cpu and better graphics chip, NFC and bigger storage with maybe 4g capability but since 4g is presently a bit of a con anyway since it's not true 4g and only available in the US/Sweden.

edit: Actually according the 4G standards no country in the world presently have true 4G

Can't see the display improving for the next model without increasing the size of the screen.

Verizon are starting a big roll-out early next year in 60 major cities, as well as airports. Coincidence that the AT&T exclusive contract is coming to an end shortly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

again a big con..Verizon are not rolling out 4g but high speed 3g..
4g is 100megs and above and so far the fastest I've seen is Sprint which was only about 16 megs so well below 4g.

More power means more powerful programs. Apps are what's drawing the consumer now.

Thanks guys for all responses on this...

What other devices are coming soon that might be waiting for...Gingerbread etc?

Or is it sacrilege to speak of that around here :)

Tunein radio is 79c if I remember correctly. It gives access to much more radio stations than a normal radio. The HTC Desire has a radio in it and it's barely useable according to most. Now, that's not to say that all radios in phones are bad, but for 80c you can have radio functionality.

With due respect, no. Listening to radio over cellular data has a number of issues:
    • Low bitrates = low audio quality
    • Use of bandwidth - mobile operators only provide so much per month
    • Use of battery - keeping the 3G radio on for that long, actively receiving will absolutely crucify your battery

I imagine a leap in computing power, which in turn will lead to more powerful apps.

Also, iPad 2 will have some shiny new feature that will also be revealed to be in iPhone 5. Same way the iPad will have FaceTime that was announced with the iPhone 4. Circle of life.

something seriously wrong if people are discussing whether they should wait for the next iteration of a phone (regardless) of who makes it so early into the product's lifespan.

if we done this with every type of consumer electronic we'd all have more friends...

It's not worth waiting for the iPhone 5. Even if it is a major upgrade (which I can't see happening myself), you'll probably have to wait until next August to get it. As far as it being worth the hype, nothing is ever worth that, but the iPhone 4 is worth the money imo, if you are actually going to use it for what it's best at, rather than as just for phone calls/texts.

It's a good phone, much prefer it having used an Android phone previously.
I'd seriously reconsider going with O2 for the iPhone on prepay though. You're looking at spending up to €31 per month on data alone. Far better value elsewhere.

Not to mention the delay which makes Radio commentary at a sporting event impossible. Lack of FM radio is a huge negative for me as well.

Ahhh, I've a bunch of radio apps and they're a pain in the arse. The "multitasking" on them is horribly inconsistent. If I take a call, it's 50/50 whether the radio will come back on - and in this weather the last thing you want is to be taking your gloves off, your phone out in the sleet and restarting the stream.

That's interesting - though I'd imagine if they can pop a decent radio in the nano - they can do it to the iPhone too.

iPhone is significantly more battery draining than the nano. Radio would crucify it. Apps are better anyway: better for battery, perfect reception and more stations to choose from.

Switch network, there's far, far better value on prepay elsewhere.
Your best bet is to order direct from Apple at €599, that way the phone is unlocked and you are free to use any network you like.

Vodafone do the iPhone4 16GB for €589 on prepay if you wanted to buy in store from them.
If you switch to them and bring your number with you, you get €20 credit for registering your details and then if you top up €20 per month for the next 10 months, you get an extra €10 credit.

There are two choices for internet on ready to go:
€20 top-up using their Vodafone 360 service gets you 100MB of internet for 39c per day, charged only on the days you use it (€12~ a month if you have the iPhone data always switched on).
€30 top-up gives you 250MB of free mobile internet for 30 days. If you go over, you are then charged at 99c per day. 250MB should be more than enough for always on e-mail, browsing on mobile websites like m.boards.ie, m.facebook.com etc.

On both the €20 and €30 top up offers, you also get either free calls and texts to Vodafone, or free texts to any network.

    Three do the iPhone4 16GB for €569.
They allow you to purchase internet in chunks of 250MB at €5 each.
They also are doing an offer that if you top up €20 you get €10 free, seemingly for life.
Their €20 top up gives you free texts to any network, and free weekend calls to any network.

I also heard the iPhone 5 is supposed to come with an internal antenna that doesn't require you to attach a signal booster (e.g. a piece of sellotape) on the outside. Can't wait.
