I think it'll be interesting to see how peoples cars have been affected by the conditions so far this year....

    So as the title says...

Since the cold snap hit what has gone wrong on your car/not worked properly?

    Name your...

    1. Car
    2. Fault
    3. Fix

    1.

    I own a '04 Alfa GT JTD.

    2.

    My handbrake was frozen.
My ABS and VDC stopped working as the sensors were frozen.

    3.

Both problems went when they thawed through the day.

Not so much went wrong, but my wife and a few neighbours left their rear wipers clear of the rear windows last night to stop them freezing to the glass, and some (presumably drunken) gob****es decided it'd be a great laugh to rip them off, breaking the mounting completely.

haha love the edit there! :D

I have to say though your rant along with all the other posts are starting to make me think I should just go and buy a set of winter tyres.

Get a second hand set of alloys somewhere and get a set of winter tyres put on cause this just isnt going to get any better and in fairness if there is a let up we'll be hit again in January lets be fair about it!!

The ABS and ASR failures are usually rectified with a new battery. Its to do i was told with the voltage drop.
I had it with my 03 when i had it and replaced battery, never again any errors.

The only issue with the Focus is that when it gets to 4 degrees it beeps with a yellow snowflake and when it gets to 0.5 and below it beeps and goes red.

Now the outside temperature seems to be floating around -1 and + 1 so the car is always fvcking beeping.

Can't turn it off at all. :D

    '95 Ford Escort

Nothing at all has gone wrong. Starts on the button in the morning.

Tyres have fairly good grip too (considering I got them second hand in a scrapyard!). Had to pull a Merc that was stuck in a car park yesterday! No problem at all. :)

Spay WD40 on the locks and you'll have no problem with them freezing over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

    Car: 1990 VW Transporter
    Faults: none
Fix: -fitted winter tyres end of October
    - refilled wash wipe with concetrated antifreeze
    - fitted new battery in October (old one was weak)
    - treated door locks with silicone oil when cold weather was forecast
    - ditto door rubbers
    - immersed accelerator cable in WD 40 (to prevent it from freezing like last year)

Ohh ..had one near fault today. While putting the shopping in the boot I nearly hit my head, as the cold gas struts didn't extend the bootlid to full height :D Fix: gave it a push

    Monday Morning
    • Window washer frozen (dispite anti freeze)
    • Run engine and cup of warm water and screw driver to break up slush in reservoir

    :)

F***ing transfer box locked up on the freelander i had in storage to use in case we had a bad winter ! , had to drive with the back wheels locked solid, 3 miles on the ice. Either that or block a main road.

Got all of two days out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I have a loaner of a 03 Honda Civic at the moment until I collect my new car. This morning the driver's door would not open due to the hard frost. Passenger door opened no problem so I started the car and put on the heater, etc to defrost it before I set off on my commute. Came back about 5 mins later to check on it and the car had locked itself despite the keys being in the ignition and the car running. So locked out of the car with the engine running, heater on full blast and a full tank of petrol.

Had to wake the owner up and get them to get a taxi to my house with the spare key. Took them about an hour to arrive. It was like the Bahamas inside the car by the time I got it open.

Fix: Not a clue - anyone any idea if this will sort itself out? Perferably without a trip to the mechanic.
