had something similar in a thread regarding militaria in Dublin, but am also interested in where I can buy military medals around the country.
fairs are the obvious source, but more often than not I end up missing them. otherwise it is difficult to source medals in Ireland. sometimes I get lucky in an army surplus shop, but it is very hit and miss.

I know of a place in Belfast and Athlone, but that is it.

you mentioned LIR in another thread , i bought a couple of medals from him , sold a few to him also but he was tight with the cash. i am sure you try antique shops , i will always drop into them if i am passing , sometimes you can be lucky. but otherwise cant help.

I guess he wants to a make a bit of a profit. i have only been there once and was happy to get a discount.

i have tried antique shops, but rarely found anything and if they did have any, tend to overprice them.

got lucky with russian medals in a second hand shop today.

    Where in Athlone?

    Where in Athlone?

the shop is called Treasures (or at least the word treasures is in the title) near a bridge just up from an Old IRA monument. the guy running it is Louis Walsh. its basically an antique shop, but he has a lot of Irish medals and a few British and Third Reich items. its worth a visit.

If you can make it to dublin then I'd recommend the regular militaria fairs (north star or Teachers Club). Dealers from the north and the republic, sometimes france and uk etc, usually a bargain or two to be found on the day. The prices in georgian arcade I find to be excessively high and the choice is very limited.

i have no problem with people trying to make a few quid and glad you got a discount . i was offered e30 for a WW1 German four medal bar. they even told me they sell the Iorn Cross for e70.

there is a Czech girl there and seems quite friendly. i have been in medal shops abroad and once you ask the price they do not want anything to do with you.

70 euro should get you an iron cross. i have bought them a lot cheaper. depends on condition and of course maker.

if you are into collecting Bundeswehr items, the shops of Temple Bar have a broad selection of hats and walking out jackets, but i think you are more WW1?

found a small antique place on the quays in Dublin, between o'connell street and the SIPTU building.
he has a dublin fusiliers cap badge as well as another irish regiment. seriously overpriced and he does not seem to know much about militaria, but maybe worth looking into.

There are profit margins and then there is taking the piss. An offer of €30 for that is completely taking the piss !!

I would not recommend that georgian arcade place at all (not just because of this €30 offer).

I would say it again but the Dublin fairs are your best bet for choice and price and for the ability to get a 2nd opinion from different dealers and collectors.

North Star or Teachers club being the main ones - the events section has the lowdown on them.

The guy in that shop was abit strange..he was trying to pass off Tobacco Cards as genuine photographs of hitler and wanted 130 euro for a plaster bust that had been bashed to bits on one side.

its been a while since i was in that shop but i remember he was trying to pass off del-Pardo model soldiers , the ones you can sometimes get bi-weekly in magazines, as antique items. i only asked about them to see what he would say. he was also looking for mad money for a sh**e bust of churchill.

you can see why i didnt take her offer, she seemed a bit pissed off when i said no to it . she couldnt understand how i felt that a cross on its own would cost around e60 and i wasnt going to take e30 for four good medals. i'm glad i didnt sell its a nice group.

i have never sold anything in the North Star or Teachers club but have got good stuff at both of them .

My sister bought me a nice medal for Christmas. I found out through my niece after some subtle proding that the shop where she bought it wanted 200 Euro for it, but that she haggled him down to 160 yo-yos.
The going rate for the medal is about 60 Euros. I obviously could never tell her this as she was good enough to spend weeks wondering what to buy me and looking for shops in Dublin. But what a rip off merchant!!

I called in to the place in Athlone last week when I was down that way. He had a couple of Irish medals and that was it, nothing that interested me, he said he had a few German medals a while back but never got more once they were sold.

I was there a year ago and he also had British medals. as regards third reich, the selection isn't great in this country.

I never understood why there are so many shysters in militaria dealing?

I was at a fair some time ago and the dealer had a medal that interested me - the going rate is around 300 euro. So I was hugely surprised when he said it was 30 euro. I asked him was it repro and he said that it was not. Then I turned it sideways and it had a very clear circular cast line around the rim

Alright I wouldn't have been burned as much as MedalFuhrer was but 30 euro for a cast is still wasted money.

    Huge Military collection

Irish Liquidators has been asked to sell a fantastic collection of military items. The collections comprises of Uniforms, Hats, knifes and bayonets, Medals, cap badges and insignia. Some of the highlights inc AN RAF 5 medal group inc 2 stars and good conduct medal Named and an Irish civil war ammo pouch, There is too much to list so its worth a visit to the shop to see the complete collection. As well as a selection of full dress uniforms there is medals from Great Britain, Germany, France, U.S and U.N as well as a great selection of cap badges, patches and insignia, ammo, magazines and pouches.

    From the ad:
The shop is open from 10-6 Mon-Sat and sun 11-5 and is on the Straffan to Clane Rd in County Kildare. We also have a 25% sale so our prices are great value. Also 100+ military books

    Think it's called Irish Liquidators.

there is a place in Dublin one, just off dorset street. its a military model shop, but it has a few Irish and british badges as well as WW2 reenactor equipment including SS cuff titles for a tenner.

I'm only guessing but I would say they would be way overpriced compared to other worldwide dealers. If you are buying online the only extra cost will be postage and if buying from a dealer where this kind of stuff is more accessible then I cannot imagine an Irish dealer being able to match their prices even including postage. I am green with envy of people living on mainland europe or the USA who have access to these vast militaria shows, shops and even the ability to search for veterans looking to sell their bring backs. Just another drawback to living on an island at the edge of the world.

    a nice selection.

protac makes his own stuff and supplies the army. some stuff is of good quality, other stuff less so.
a lot of soldiers are critical of him.
as regards the collectibles no one is going to fork out 1000 euros for a PDF sword. they can be had for a lot less.

now that I think of it the is an army surplus in Killarney at the outlet. last time I was there they had bayonets for the steyr for sale. expect to pay about 100 e for it.

i have got stuff from the bloke that runs this site at the teachers club so if you have a problem its easy to catch up with him. he has good stuff and i have bought medals from him in the past.

I think it's worth pointing out to any newer collectors that some of those online links are incredibly expensive.

You would pick many of those items up a lot cheaper either at auctions, militaria fairs (look under events above) or from foreign based online militaria dealers or from classified adverts on militaria forum websites.

Agreed, There are some crazy prices being asked. It seems to be the way in Ireland.

I happened upon a little shop in Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim that has some bits and pieces of militaria for sale - a few random bayonets and some medals - mostly British and South African named medal bars. Sadly also very expensive. They also wanted €75 for an unmarked WW1 EK2 with replaced ribbon, and €50 for one with a broken suspension ring (drilled through the frame with an incorrectly replaced ring and ribbon)!!

I talked to the owner and he tried to convince me that they were very competitive prices... needless to say, I did not purchase.

I have seen similair prices at militaria shops in Normandy, an infamous one in St Mere Eglise springs to mind. The owners know that 99.9% of militaria collectors will laugh at the prices and keep on walking, but all it takes is the 1% of new or non medal collectors to pay and then they stay in business. They are there for years and years so their approach seems to catch enough unsuspecting victims to allow them to stay in business.

Likewise with the online ones, there are some dealers who have items they know are completely overpriced but it costs them nothing to leave them on their site for years and years and years then one day someone knew happens along and thinks this must be a correct price and then they pay it. I know of some dealers with inventory sitting on their websites year in and year out - other collectors I know have commented on this too.

Another tactic i have seen is in captioning items, ie this is a 'Winterschlacht im Osten' medal from Stalingrad . . . .oh really and how do you know that it's from Stalingrad and why should I believe you ?

I presume you mean S***** Line, crazy tourist trap prices. Getting reasonably priced items in Normandy is not easy and you can forget it in towns like St. Mere Eglise especially anytime around June 6th.

Sorry for going slightly off topic.

there is a place in Carlingford that sells a lot of repro Third Reich and 1916 stuff. he does has a few genuine articles as well. if you are interested check him out soon as the Mail on Sunday is spearheading a campaign to have him closed down (apparently selling anything with a swastika on it is akin to selling kiddie porn)

i got the badges i have at fairs in dublin and some from the internet. i got most from the fair in the North Star Hotel and a couple from the fair in the Teachers Club. if you get a good dealer you can get insignia from e20 up. i bought from the same dealer in the NS Hotel and would go back to him at the next fair if i wanted something and it would build up a bit of a working relationship with him and it was easier to haggle with him and he would give me a discount if i was buying a couple of things from him.

its harder to buy from the net as you dont get the feel of the item and if the item is priced low and looks too good to be true then keep away from it as it is probably fake/restrike , unless thats what you want?. i was caught out a couple of times.

I have a 1916-1921 Service Medal, bought along with a coin collection, on research it is being sold from 450-1100 Euros retail online. Two dealers I offered it too in Belfast and Dublin offered £275 (330euro) and 300euro. It is the non-combatant type without Comrac Bar. Can anyone advise if this is a fair price and would I do better to wait for the Feb Coin Fair at the RDS ?

If it has its original coffin-case these offers might be ok, but if it is just the medal on its own, then jump on it. Lately, these non-combatant medals (without case) usually go for about €200. I picked one up recently for €180. Having the original case will certainly increase the value, but note that a lot of sellers are offering these with the green case from the anniversary medals, claiming that they are the correct case.

    Hi,

I read Georges Street Arcade was mentioned. I remember last time I stopped by I saw alot of fake Third Reich items for sale. One cross in particular that stood out was a fake Mother's Cross. Caution is advised when buying medals but in all fairness I think coins, bank notes and phone cards are his area of expertise.

I have this dealers business card and details for anyone that may be interested.

I have been attending militaria fairs both North and South of the border for about ten years. I always pick up business cards, bring them home and put them into a shoe box. I will go through the shoe box when I get home and see what may be of interest to you all.

I wont post personal information such as names or phone numbers because this is against the rules.

Most of the business cards and flyers in mys shoe box contained personal information ie names of the individuals were also used in their e-mails addresses which means I won't post them but here is a small list of what I can post.
