I would recommend contacting your lecturer to see if other arrangements can be made even if college opens.

But first find out who will not be able to make it. If you don't have a method of contact for him/her it's worth asking the WIT SU to see if they can track it down.

Its being opened and WITSU are advising people to take it easy on the roads and not drive at night.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bit crazy? The roads are worse here then they were during the last spell of bad snow/ice! There isn't much concern that students have zero experience of driving in snow, thick heavy ice. Its extremely hazardous, and stupid to drive down to Waterford in this cold spell. Its not about taking it easy, or
not driving at night. Its about not driving at all until its completely clear and safe to do so.

Personally, id advise people to stay at home if the roads are not great around you. There very poor around Waterford, so thats a concern for people who get into the City and find it hard to drive around. Just take it much slower then normal, keep an even safer distance and all maneuvers you do - do them with caution and slow. Its like a sheet of ice in many parts out there.

Your lectures email address is usually first letter of first name followed by their surname @wit.ie. So Joe Bloggs is jbloggs@wit.ie. Alternatively, have a look here: http://www.wit.ie/SchoolsDepartments/SupportAdministration/ComputerServices/staffdirectory/

"Hi Everyone. WIT is Open tomorrow, however if you cannot travel to Waterford please Do NOT! Contact your lecturers if you cannot attend class and notify them. Road Conditions are dangerous so please take care.Any issues please contact Conor on 086-7854420"

Yeah I think your right sully, I personnel would not want to make the decision to open college tomorrow when there is a high possibility it could result in Student/s being involved in an accident.

I would recommend that one keep an eye out for any changes to the current decision by WIT, as according to Met Eireann "further snow showers will occur, mainly in coastal counties of the northwest, north east and south."
And AA "Gardai in Waterford City are advising motorists not to make any unnecessary journeys due to snow and icy road conditions "

I've told the lads in our class not to come back to waterford tonight...

my dad owns a haulage company and they're not comin to waterford tonight so I'm taking it that if bulk tanks dont wanna drive to the ford, the little cars that are likely to have bad tires shouldnt either...

if you are driving, check your tires! AVOID back roads

drive slower in a higher gear and if ya hit black ice (or any ice at all) foot off the accelerator, and steer with it, DO NOT BREAK!

Drive safe if driving at all

Iv put up an announcment on the forum in regards to this. Ill paste whats in the announcment in case its overlooked.

Folks, WIT Students Union have confirmed that the college is going to open tommrow.

However, I would have to advise you that the roads around Waterford are very poor. It snowed very heavily yesterday and a small bit today, but it hasn't melted but instead frozen over solid. Main roads are being treated, some anyway, but remain very slippy and icey.

My personal recommendation, for what its worth, would be to stay at home and not drive down. If you have exams, assignments, presentations or whatever - no problem, you can simply contact your lecturer and inform him/her that you cant travel due to the weather. They can be contacted by email (first letter of first name plus surname @wit.ie example Joe Bloggs is jbloggs@wit.ie) in regards to this.

If you insist on driving down, and again its not recommended even by the AA and the Guards, then make sure you visit AA Roadwatch for up-to-date travel advise and Met.ie for Weather. Its not fully accurate, so be very careful regardless of what road your on.

Take it easy - slow, keeping a safe distance (even safer), and ensuring your maneuvers in the car (breaking, turning, reversing etc.) are done with ease. Don't rush anything and be careful on hills and corners.

If this was any other week, the college would close for the day. Take last year for example, starting semester 2 a day late made no difference. This is the last week of lectures though, and I assume the main reason the college is opening tomorrow.

Ive walked in and out that road yesterday and today, and while the road there is okay atm, everywhere else is still pretty bad.

Himself has just received a text from WIT saying that college is open but if it's too dangerous please do not travel, just contact lecturer/other students and let them know your situation.

(If only my employer would be as "generous".)

As Sully said it is far worse than last Jan when WIT closed?? I would imagine the reason for not closing is that the lost day(s) would have to be made up next week and the weather may not have changed too much by then.

id say they will have to close the college tomorrow. I was in there today and it is lethal to walk around, no one was in including lecturers and most of my classes were cancelled.

its rediculous that te registrar is insisting the college stay open , its not like we want a free day or anything safety should come first , always , i hope conor doyle is represting the students on this, its not safe out there

Its ridiculous that they are keeping the college open and then saying some lecturers might not be in, it should just be closed. People risking their lives to get to Waterford and then having no classes.

One of the girls can't get her car back up the hill into strawberry hill!

The SU have made it clear that if you're having doubts about travelling don't as have college authorities

thats not the point , they should be proactive , many are trying to get down dispite the conditions simply because the college is open , im sure that the college are aware of that and yet dont close the college, surely the safety of the students and staff come 1st, simply saying 'if you dont tink you can come to college its ok' isnt good enough, they should close the college period.

Closing the college isn't the answer.

If they closed today and tomorrow, they would need to open for two days next week to accommodate the two days missed. Then study week would be only 3 days. This would lead to study week being extended, and then the exam timetables themselves being affected. Its too late for that now.

I've walked in and out the 3 times since it snowed. Any students currently around Waterford City are perfectly capable of walking in or getting the Ballybeg or WIT bus to the college. I went in today and there were plenty of students. If you're in Tramore or Dunmore or wherever they don't risk it if you don't want to. Same goes for anyone outside of the side. Just email your lecturers. Simple as that.

They could be pro-active and close the college in January when this happened because it had no effect. Dates hadnt been finalised so they could afford to delay start of semester two for two days, and then both study week and exam start dates were postponed for two days.

However if it does snow again this evening, the college should be closed. The Gallery and Oskars were closed today and I couldnt get my soup and sub deal AND THAT IS A DISGRACE!

To be fair, people in Waterford are also finding it hard to get into WIT, staff included. There are reports that the college (maybe just College St) is freezing, the canteen closing early and no lecturers in. So either way, time will need to be made up for many.

Its dangerous not to discourage people strongly from travelling down to Waterford on Sunday when the conditions were poor and the Gardai/AA are constantly asking people not to take any unnecessary journeys. Its just easier for Waterford people getting to class but those travelling find it harder/next to impossible. So if class goes ahead, a lot of people miss out, and you cant just repeat the class so they do miss out even if allowances are made.

Best option keeping it open? Tough call.

college open, but severe snow storm blowing outside right now. worse than the other day indeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

    tomorrow will be really dodgy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

So I walked for 40 minutes out to the college and only when I got there did I encounter problems! If they're keeping the college open and expect students to travel in risky conditions to get there, the least that they can do is grit and clear the walkways of snow! It's more dangerous walking around college than it is travelling to and from the place which is a bit of a joke!

I take back the nice things I've said about college street. It was Baltic!

We built a snowman outside today by the main door, it was like up to my shoulder, canteen wouldnt give me a carrot for his nose tho...

and some guys started a snowball fight with us...

well worth going in for a 9am lecture and staying in for a 1pm lecture!

Horrendously worded post on their Facebook page yesterday which made many think that they were closing yesterday at 5pm and not opening until Friday at 8am. That's not the case.
