Diet is what will make you lose weight. Heavy lifting is what will make you look really good when you take your clothes off.

Cardio will give you a healthy heart and lungs, but unless you do major amounts, won't make a significant change to your body shape. Do enough cardio to give your heart and lungs a workout, and then concentrate on lifting. Go for squat, bench press, deadlift and similar lifts.

I have a basic lifting question and dont think it warrants a thread of its own, so ust to hijack the thread for a second.

Is it better to do straight sets (i.e sets of 10 reps) or pyramid sets (ie 10 -heaviest weight / 12 / 10 reps).

What I'm doing at the moment is straight sets. When I am able to do 10/10/10 I move on to the next heaviest dumb-bell.

Just wondering if one type is better than the other?

Depends on how advanced you are. For beginners and intermediates, straight sets are best. If you are advanced, you need to do a bit more to force your body beyond its comfort zone, so you start with pyramid sets, forced reps, drop sets, all that sort of stuff, as an addition.

Even the experts use straight sets with heavy weights.
