My baby is parked about 10 minutes away from the house. Couldn't get her home the other night so she'll have stay lonely for a few days more by the looks of it.

Haven't seen anyone mad enough to take a bike out on them roads.

Any security concerns there? Maybe walk her home to safety?

Seen a guy pegging it on a Scooter last ni in lucan while i was crapping me jocks in a car going in the opposite direction. Back to the bus tomorrow. Hate doing it but wouldnt make it out of the drive way on the bike. One good thing about the snow is pulling handbreak turns into the driveway :-)

I live and work on the N11 so if I can get the 100 yards to the road then I'm on the bike. I'm going to give it a try in the morning.

It's in off the dual carraigeway so not readily visible by people passing. Locked up with chain and brake disc lock to a metal gate so is secure enough. Off tomorrow so gonna try wheel her home if i can. I gave it a go on Saturday morning but after 20 yards it was clear it would be ridiculous to try and ride her to work so had to leave her behind. Feckin' winter.

Anybody else drive in? I thought I was grand until I realised I couldn't use my back brake, my front brake or my throttle.

Was helping my landlord clear the ice from his car this morning. He was nice enough to offer me a lift to work since I wasn't going anywhere on the bike (1 mile from main road).

So, 10 mins clearing off the car....and then we notice the flat tyre.

    ...just not my day.

If this winter is as bad as last year I will have to think about getting a second car, kind of defies the point of running a bike as I got the bike so I did not have to run a second car.

I came in last year on the bike in similar conditions ended up leaving the bike in work for about 4 days. Prob is Public transport doesn't really come close to my work so pretty stuck- got a lift today but if it continues like forecast could be stuck at home tomorrow.

Was on the bike the whole way through the last two freezes. Too many hairy moments and close calls. Won't be doing it again this year. Car all the way.

I just saw a guy on a scooter practically skating along the ice -I was in the car and finding it very difficult to get any traction all the way home. Seriously, anyone who takes the bike out in conditions like this must be a full on retard. Remember last year hearing about all the people falling off? Tell work or whatever to f**k off - nothing is worth risking an injury or worse...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭Alkers

Did it back when I was on the scooter and didn't find it anyway near as bad as it would be on the bike. On a fifty cc you can have both legs down and still have a back brake and the weight and and height is a lot more manageable if you do start to slide. Can only really go for short hops though, not much use if you have a long commute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,545 ✭✭✭Luckycharm

So has anyone been brave/stupid enough to go out on the bike yet? Seen a few cyclists- been getting a lift in - it takes forever- cannot wait to be back on the bike.

Seen a guy on a 50cc scooter earlier, don't know how he's managing to get around. My estate is still in bits,it'd be suicide trying to take a bike out on it. Hopefully a thaw from midweek onwards will let me get up and running again on friday.

Tis woeful, I serviced my GasGas enduro bike and thought Id take it for a quick spin up the lane, no grip and thats with new race knobbilies on!!! I saw a lunatc drive the M50 on a cb500 the other evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,120 ✭✭✭shrapnel222

took the scooter out today. main roads are good enough but any other road is lethal. didn't enjoy it tbh but 30 minutes on the scooter beats 2 hours on the bus.

Thought about it today but my estate is an ice rink so will wait till monday- commute is killing me this last week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Dorsanty

I got free from my estate 2 days ago but regretted it immediately. The 200 meters or so to actual tarmac from garage was scary stuff. Back wheel wanted to come around a few times and front wheel went wherever the solid ice pushed it.

Once free tough I was able to spin into town and back out. No fun to be had though, contemplating having to get back home safely all the way. Tapped the front brake for a sec in a moment of madness and had the front lock up instantly, real butt clenching stuff. Got her home safe and sound but won't venture out again until Sunday at the earliest.

Stay safe all, patience is key!

It's been killing me having 4 bikes parked up in the front garden and not being able to travel, there are my only method of transport.

Finally got back on the road again today. Still a few dodgy patches in the estates but the main roads are fine. Bike started on the button (garaged) but it's filthy now from all the sludge on the road! Hopefully the cold doesn't come back!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,784 ✭✭✭Dirk Gently

got out for a spin myself today. some shaded roads are still icey but generally conditions are good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,577 ✭✭✭lord lucan

I got her out to work yesterday, felt great to be back on 2 wheels. Sadly this morning was a different story, dropped her on black ice at a roundabout.:(

Doubt the guy is a boardsie but if he is hopefully the guy who had a slide at the N4 flyover at Woodies this morning is ok. Nasty slide on black ice.

Done the same thing myself last January. A few days after the thaw and thought everything was ok but hit some black ice on a junction and went sliding around a bend across the other side of the road. Luckily there was no traffic at that hour of the morning. Scary feeling when both wheels go together and you know you're on the way down.

Luckily I broke the bikes fall though and there was no damage to the bike. :pac: Once I realised there was no traffic and I was sliding at a nice pace along the ground I held onto it and didnt let it go.

The early mornings are a pain in the arse this time of the year. 6am the roads can be pretty bad but by mid morning they're all fine after the temp rises a bit. Very hard to spot the ice but I know most of the potential bad spots along my route now.

Hope you and the bike are ok.

Ouch hope you are Ok, was back on the bike today it was great - main roads were fine, road out of estate was an ice rink only about 150m long but ended up going slowly along path as it was clear.

She's a few more battle scars on the right hand side to match those on the left hand side from a similar incident 2 years ago. The joys of using her for commuting 52 weeks a year i guess. I was a bit sore but tbh i was more concerned about the machine but she's running grand so it's all good.:)

Wow ...well done to anyone who can use their bike all year round ...respect . I am only a leisure rider these days ,but for the majority of the year (not just summer) ....about 20 years ago ,when my bike was my only transport ,it was used every working day ,but age (wisdom?) have taught me that if the ground is white, forget the bike.......altough a mate of mine has just bought a Gilera 3 wheeler ,and I cant wait to try that in the next belt of snow...which is appartnetyl next Thursday:confused:

I'm seriously considering at looking at a Piaggio MP3 tbh. After January & Februarys weather and now a rough start to this winter it may be an option. Haven't found anything online to suggest how it handles in snow/icy conditions,i'll be interested to hear how your mates Gilera handles.

What puts me off is the ambiguity about it's licensing. Apparently it's taxed as a bike but a car license is required to ride it??!!

Yes taxed as motorcycle and requires car license to ride. But AON insure it as a motorcycle, so I could have it on the same policy as my Monster. I posted details before on this, should come up in a search under my name.

My MP3 is in with the mechanic, but as soon as I can I'm planning on changing tyres to the Metzeler Feelfree Wintec

    http://www.metzelermoto.com/web/products/newproducts/feelfree_wintec/default.page

They're the only scooter or motorcycle tyre I've found designed to work at low temps and have the M+S stamp on the side. I've already ridden my MP3 in the snow and it wasn't bad, but I'm hoping with some better winter tyres its performance would improve.
