UPC- What would you like to see?

    Hello,
Currently doing an Innovation project based on UPC. I wanted to see what UPC customers would like to see from their provider.

Think different, don't just say "I wish they were more like sky", or "I wish they were faster/cheaper/better", what would make UPCs products integrate easier into your life?

More HD channels (including Sky HD)
    An EPG that actually works
    Interactive services

Some of these are out of their control. Others are not. All three would make it a far better service.

the recent updates have fixed this and people are reports that they now prefer upcs to skys.

    ok back to the question

the thing i would most like to see is vod
and the promised movies rental service

More HD content, FX, SyFy, Comedy Central to name but a few are already broadcasting in it for a start. The EPG is nowhere near as good a Sky's, that could be improved on.

    More HD channels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭thefishone

Don't find anything wrong with the guide, then again I don't use it more then once a day,so maybe I'm missing something.

What would I like to see,VOD and maybe a bit much to ask,but to be able to rent movies as they are released in the cinema.

id be happy with the hd,phone and broadband service, not better hd,phone or broadband, just plain old hd,phone and broadband.
for a company that is the main cable supplier in the country their slowness in getting all products up and running country wide has been a disgrace.

Series Link that doesn't tape shows twice or more and old seasons that are being repeated. If I set for Season 5 it should be obvious I don't want to see Seasons 1-4.

    More HD

    Digital tv
Redesign your software from scratch on your digital plus box. Its crap. So slow and clunky.
A proper EPG. Like the old one but smoother. With genres etc
Fast forward and rewind that works. (Saorview on ps3 is better)
(Well well. It's been updated. But it's about time)

Better quality picture on digital. (Saorview with rabbits ears on ps3 is better)
Get rid of the channels your not subscribed to.
    More HD Channels.
Move Bravo, ID and Discovery realtime up with the rest of the entertainment channels.
    Good value HD VOD.

Broadband I am very happy with except..
Same Prices and BB speeds as our EU counterparts. (Stop just barely being better than the rest. Blow them out of the water. You know you can).

i would like to see RTE's player, TV3 catchup TnaG's player and the bbc's iplayer, last week, tbf. UPC are not using there unique advantage that they have over satellite, which is streamed interactive content.

I read recently that they have put off VOD until 2012.

The BBC iPlayer is highly unlikely.

I would like UPC to take the same interest in this as the OP has.

They ask the very same question on their website in their latest survey, think its just 2 questions

The survey UPC has is the same survey they've had for months. i.e. How likely are you to recommend UPC to a friend and what would the reasons be that you wouldn't.

Unless they've got another survey somewhere.

The HD service needs a lot of development. More HD channels yes (and a better mix - currently they're almost all documentaries), but BSkyB's HD channels (especially Sky Sports HD) are an absolute necessity if they want to drive take up of the service.

Back to the SD service and there's still some channels they could add. The CBS-branded channels are a surprising ommission since UPC's parent actually owns 50% of them! The missing UKTV channels (especially Watch). I'm not sure what else they can add, especially when its still unclear exactly what Living TV channels are surviving the upcoming cull (we know Bravo, Bravo 2, and Channel One are closing at any rate, and in fact apart from Living TV itself (which is becoming Sky Living) no other channels from the group are confirmed as surving).

Red Button services are dependant on channels offering them and developing them for the UPC platform. So far, no ones showed any interest (RTÉ as I noted elsewhere seem to have no interest in developing red button applications).

For me it's proper series link which asks you

    1. Do you want to record all eps in this season or ALL seasons.
    2. Do you want to record all eps from this channel or ALL channels etc.

I'd even settle for it being aware of the +1 channels. This is basic stuff.

Allow use on non-UPC devices as they do in most of the rest of Europe with a legit UPC subscription!

I'm a Media Centre person, I want one box to do it all; it does my free to air satellite but not my UPC connection, as that would be breaking the TOS...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

To take care of longer standing customers as well as new customers.
I'd like to be able to get a wireless modem with UPC as new customers are given as standard rather than being no, no, no.

bring in PC cards. they can be card locked like the boxes but at least give us the option.

Offer googleTV-esque equipment. Given they provide both TV and internet this will be eventually something they will have to offer so rather then wait look into it now.

Other then that I would settle for the "red button" facility

this has been lanuched in some countries this year and will be launched here next year

there is a thread about it already

I almost forgot my No 1 Wish for UPC at the moment...sort the EPG. Please. The grid view is way too slow, there is no need to redraw the screen everytime you move the cursor, the processing that is required to do this is slowing the grid view too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,943 ✭✭✭wonderfulname

Thanks, some good suggestions here, also handy to be reminded of what's in the pipeline already, anybody else got an idea they would like to share? Even something that seems outlandish (I think everyone at some point wished they could pause live tv long before it was possible, so even what seems to be ridiculous could be a great concept!).

    OP

    Remote record. Sky+ has it.
Allow a recorded program to be viewed during dual recording. Sky+ can do this.
Manage your account through your STB where the cable network is capable. Sky+ can do this.

If I have UPC phone service, and someone rings, pop the number up on my TV screen.

Think someone mentioned it on here before - let the user begin watching the current program on a channel from the beginning. For example, it's 6.15, I switch on the Six One news, I press the blue button and the Six One news instantly begins playing from the beginning.

An EPG that goes back in time as well as forward. I know there'll be copyright issues to overcome but give the option, where available, of implementing a catch-up service on channels.

Clash avoidance. If you try to record three recordings at the same time, the EPG should be able to spot if one of those programs is repeated and you can set your DVR to catch the repeat and avoid the clash. I know this involves the channel providers supplying accurate information but would be a nice feature if they could get it working right!

Have the same services across their whole network and not only patches here and there. Some places can't get HD (Phone and/or BB) but only standard digital TV. Still people with no available HD pay the same as for those who get HD piped in...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 Frank2k

    Move Bravo...

Don't worry, Bravo will soon be gone forever and with a little luck it will be replaced with nothing rather than something like Angels 2

needs upping every so often as its an absolute disgrace that parts of dublin have no hd or broadband from upc.

is theyre any upc workers who keep an eye on the threads here who fancy answering some questions?

Remote record. Particularly with a funky Android app.

At the moment I'd settle for a digital TV signal that doesn't freeze and reset a couple of times a minute (EVERY minute) and a picture that doesn't look like a collection of multi-coloured boxes drawn on the screen. That'd be good.

Maybe if they sorted that I'd like to be able to get broadband in my area and god forbid some kind of sky+ option or even HD television. I don't think this is too much to ask seeing as I live about 3-4 miles from Dublin city centre.

If there was any way I could get Sky in my apartment block I'd be gone like a shot...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,030 ✭✭✭angel01

I would love Sky Sports HD, I would like Watch and a cooking channel to be introduced.

All in all, I am really happy with UPC :)

If UPC were serious about there HD line-up then they could easily add the following channels as they are already available on cable in the UK so there should be no issues with SKY,

    BBC 1 HD
    Living HD
    ITV 1 / UTV HD
    SKY 1 HD
    Comedy Central HD
    Channel 4 HD
    E4 HD
    Five HD
    FX HD
    SyFy HD
    MTVN HD

I'd be a bit dubious about the final quality if the same dish is split between loads of people but I think the management company has to agree to this/set it up anyway. Which I can't really see happening. I'm only renting as well so I don't know how long I could commit to it for. Might register my interest on that phoneline all the same...;) Thanks!

yes I agree with this also.

We have sky in our apartment. They put a few dishes up. As far as I know, It is 4 to 1 dish.

Also to the Upc guy. What about Apps for iPhone and Android as mentioned before.
For recording and to view your account.

More than anything I would like pressing the red button to work. A lot of sport content is available "via the red button" only but none of these features are available to UPC customers.

I would also like to be able to increase the memory of the hard disk box- either by being able to download contents or having increased memory available

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

    Iphone app for recording
Fixed term no penalty packages (Say you want sports for 3 months, you pay up front and get cut off without penalty)
More HD channels - haven't bothered switching because of lack of channels.
Long term customers being looked after, too much bias to new customers.

Agree with JoeyJJ. Would like to upgrade but wont until I get the same deal as 'new customers'.

Any chance of being able to record radio channels ?

I keep hearing about the 'on demand' service, would like that asap.

    Would like more HD Channels.

having said the above, I'm very satisfied with the service, well done UPC

ci plus would get me using the service tomorrow.
then expansion of the HD service and i would happily give them more money

I want to get the new channels that the promised were coming in their mailshot to me last January, such as the Good Food Channel. Really annoyed that 11 months later there is no sign of it.

    Ability to record Radio programmes.

A more fluid EPG with the ability to sort by Entertainment and Documentaries that they had on the last one.

If you ring 1908 salesline & ask to transferred to the customer loyalty team they will give you the same deal as new customers.

I recently upgraded from the digital value+ package to the value+ hd - the ordinary sales team wanted to charge me an extra €5 a month (€30.75), but got on to customer loyalty & they agreed to just charge me the €25.75 that I was already paying.

Two weeks later I decided to add broadband & phone, & was looking at the Fibre Sport package which is advertised for new customers at €70 a month. The sales team said that the best they could do was to add 15mb b/band, freetime world phone, digital select extra & ESPN on to my existing hd pack (this would give me the same channels as Fibre Sport package (which includes the extra hd channels), but they wanted to charge €75 instead of €70, so I asked to be put through to customer loyalty again & they agreed to just charge me €70.

    So, it is possible!

I'd like channels that I haven't subscribed to getting removed from my guide so when I'm flicking up and down the channels, I don't have to wade through all the ones I can't access anyway.
