Its a white twin towns now. Nothing major, just a dusting of snow at lower levels but its freezing hard so that wont help. Main roads out of the towns have been treated.

Just heard from a friend Raphoe Convoy road is treacherous, I'm just in from the Kernans there now, my road isn't slippery at all just yet, good dusting of snow hail but its not slippery, still 2 degrees here too so fingers crossed it stays like this but i doubt it :o

The national primary roads should be fine barring a heavy shower around the time you would be traveling.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

The major roads are all fine, I was out as far as the roundabout with the Derry road earlier and it was perfectly fine. As long as you dont leave it too late and give it a chance to freeze then you'll be fine

Sitting here the the Beech Hill Hotel in Derry in front of a roaring fire with a pint.

P.S Roads were fine on the way up.

Hope there not as much snow in Derry, the wee fellow is running in the All-Irelands tomorrow in Gransha, considering skis/skates for him instead of spikes:)

Just when I said "barring a heavy shower" it has to go and just do that.

No idea if that shower has went in the Ltterkenny - Lifford direction or not but we had about 2" here and worse again I was watching the rugby on Setanta and the bloody signal has gone completely :(

just after driving from the Mountain top to the dry arch and back. Cars sliding off the road in all directions.

Just got back to the house now up the mountain top and the salters have been out and the main roads are very drive-able (with care).

What are the roads like? Have to drive to Donegal town tomorrow - is the N15 ok?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,852 ✭✭✭homer simpson

Just in the door myself here,

Roads are now Very Very bad, N13 is very slippery, between Burt and newtown is seriously bad, just about got home from glenties, the rally that wasn't a rally (first car went half a mile into the stage then went off so the organizers decided to cancel it ) decided to go the ballybofey way home as opposed to brenagh and the road was Virtually unpassable, vans + jeeps towing rallycars home not able to make it up the hills before you come into Cloughan....

Long Story short Don't go out unless you need to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭theblueirish

Strabane and Lifford is ok on the main roads but estates are bad, Lifford to Ballinlecky is ok so far but it wouldn't take much snow fall to make it bad.

Was through there earlier on on my way home from Glenties, its was serious bad, the roads had this mornings snow compacted into them! I don't envy you :p

Just after coming back from dublin roads around monaghan are wile bad but further north not that bad, if you travelling on bus add 2 hours to your journey planner. And if you driving pack some warm clothes in back and some food just in case you get stuck. It's lookin like that kinda night

The main routes should be okay but keep the radio turned on and listen for weather and road reports and just beware of heavy showers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 692 ✭✭✭Durnish

Well, the Belfast /Glenties trip went ahead. Safe return. I didn't go as I was ascairt. They left Glenties at 4 p.m. and seem to have escaped the snowfall, thru' Laghy to Pettigo. Worst bit was from Ballygawley to Lisburn.

Sorry about yr rally, Homer, although it doesn't surprise me. Friends' car slid/rotated down a hill into Portnoo last new year.

Ok. Have to leave Derry at 1pm for Donegal Town. Which way. Via Lifford or via letterkenny ??

Reading on aa roadwatch the gap is impassable. Anyone confirm???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,555 ✭✭✭✭muffler

According to the NRA weather station its -7.1 in Killygordon just now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,555 ✭✭✭✭muffler

For anyone who hasnt seen the NRA data before, they have several stations in Donegal which are indicated by the green dots on the map when you zoom in. Just click on the dots to get data.

Alternatively you can just view the data here

Snowing heavy in letterkenny now, that with the freezing temps doesn't bode well for the rest of the week!

P.s. @irish1967 Beech Hill is lovely. Went there for a function earlier in the year, hard to find but really nice house.

i find this site very very good for weather forcast

    http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/index.asp

just type in your town eg letterkenny.

the best bit is the hourly prediction, it usually is right on the money

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

The site Irish1967 posted is the best I've come across for live updates, its always reliable for and accurate for snow down to the minute

Also, the weather is ridiculous in Letterkenny right now, absolutely bucketing down for the past 40 minutes and still going, never seen such heavy snow and the roads seem to be coming to a standstill again

This is good but I found an error for Donegal.
The map at http://www.nratraffic.ie/default.asp?mainmapzoom=yes&x=273&y=94&MapId=7146&RegionId=0&ZoomId= shows an image on the N15 (around Barnesmore Gap?) but the link is to a station on the M7 in Kildare!
I emailed the NRA to correct it.

Anyone have an update on Barnesmore Gap.
