Well with winter truly here and the price of oil sky high its time to light the fire.
Whats the best price for a bag or two of coal?
    I know Dave's gala in Balrothery is €7.99 for a 20kg bag.

I was paying €16 last year for a 40kg bag but recently found a coalman for €13, can get you his number if you want.
Plus he calls to your house which is even better :)

Where is he based? Would you mind PM-ing me his contact details?

    Thanks.

Got a leafletin the door for Balbriggan fuel depot. Ordered two bags of 40kg smokeless for 16€ each. Polish and anthracite was 15€, and there was another there for 12 or 13 quid. Delivering tomorrow.

Corr's in Balbriggan has 20KG bags very cheap. I can't remember the exact amount but I'll be calling out there in the next few days for some more. Might be as low as 6.50 a bag. I've a strong preference for the 20KG bags. Those 40KG ones are just a bit unwieldy until there's a bit gone out of them.

7.60 a bag in Corrs. 15.20 for two bags (a total of 40KG).

There is a thumbs-up icon in the bottom right-hand corner of each post. However this is only available when you have made a certain number of posts - I can't recall how many (possibly 15 in which case you are not quite there yet)

EDIT: Clearly a minimum of 10 posts required;)

Jaysus. Will find out from Harfords if he will deliver. Where abouts are you based?
If he doesnt and you are stuck I may throw a bag in the car and drop it to you.

Thats really very decent of you. :) Thanks for the offer. I just left it late last night / didn't realise we were running out. I'm definitely going to head out to your guy before Christmas though.

Why dont you just ring around get quotes and get a bulk delivery from whoever delivers. Its coal it won't go off stacked in the garden in bags and I seriously doubt we will get spring this soon!

No one delivering coal in Skerries these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭PaulD77

Ive just ordered off Bissets from Balbriggan to deliver in Skerries and he said he will try and get out to me tomorrow.
€15 for 40KG bag, I ordered 2 plus a bag of slack. No idea how much he will charge for that.
Sparkles did send me a number, but it says it is out of service

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭chughes

I got 4 25 kilo bags of Polish coal for €38 at Whites Agri a few weeks ago. It's a drive thru so I presume they don't deliver.

Balbriggan Fuel Depot were not delivering this week after monday (completely understandable) lucky for us some coalman knocked on the door at half 5 christmas eve . Stocked up. Said he would be around every second Saturday. Must get his name.

You never got that service during the Celtic Tiger!!

Starting to get cold again so thinking about a bulk buy of coal.
Anyone know of any decent deals at the moment? Some of that
Bord Na Mona 'Black Diamond' stuff I got last year was dirt, very hard to light and
no real heat. Might pay a little extra for some good quality premium stuff this year.

What is the best type of coal to get and where is the best place to buy it?

I used to buy the following coal from Coors in Balbriggan for about €7.50 a bag (20kg).

    Black-Diamond-polish.jpg

I went to buy the coal recently and it is unavailable now due to Fingal being a smokeless fuel area.

The coal I got was the following and I find it doesn't give off great heat and is difficult to get going

    1xBlack%20Diamond%20-%20Cosyglo%20Gems%2040kg_small.jpg

I am burning the above in an open fire.

While they're bang on and will go out of their way to get to you it's €16 for a 20KG bag of Black Diamond. After finding this thread I think I'm going to have to shop around. Been paying €32 each time I get a 40kg load to fill the bunker.

    Edit - Disregard please. It's €16 for 40kg delivered.

Eh, I thought it was €16 for a 40KG bag not 20KG? Coalman usually delivers bigger bags, 20KG are normally what you buy when you are stuck and need to run to some local supplier/shop.

Doh. Sorry, you're right. I was confused between the 20kg and the 40kg. Thought you got 10kg in the shops and the coleman was delivering 20kg. But now that I think about it 10kg would be tiny.

    So I can't recommend Butterly's highly enough then :)

Not coal but there is a guy just down from the Man 'O'War pub selling airdried logs.
From Man'O'War head towards Skerries and he is just on the left hand side. The yard has a sign on the front.
Has different sizes of bags and I think he delivers.
Probably the best logs I have used. Burn fantastic. Makes the damp logs you get from shops/service stations looks like the crap they are.
He has soft wood (great for getting the stove/fire going) and hard wood for when the fire is roaring.

Thanks bcmf, getting a stove in shortly. Anyone got a non boiler insert or freestanding one? Any recommendations?

Depends on budget and size of room you wanna heat but I got mine last year from a guy on the N2 just north M50 but not as far as Black Bull.

    He has 4kw or 6kw.
I got a 4 as I wasnt sure if the 6 would fit but if I were you go for the 6kw as it can take a bigger log/load plus the extra heat.
