Where do you run?

    Hi all,

I'm taking up running (first run tonight), but I'm not sure where would be best to go. I live in the city centre, and I could go to the Phoenix Park, but it would be dark by the time I get there and I'm wondering would it be safe (not just from crazy muggers, but also because I'm liable to trip over something in the dark!).

I don't really see people running around town. Are there any areas that you could recommend?

    Thanking you!

A lot of people run home from work in town, mostly out towards clontarf and sandymount. Theres no beating around the bush, its not great running through the city centre after dark, especially at rush hour, but after 10 mins its not so bad if your going in those directions. I wouldnt go near the park after dark, you can't see a thing and its a bit too far away from town anyway and the quays are a mare. Your best bet would be to head down pearse street, towards irishtown and sandymount seafront, then head back the same way or else come back in by the RDS.

The phoneix park is grand too run at night, I run on the trails with a small torch.

The north-east part of the park is fairly well lit at night, decent amount of street-lamps. The south-west part (around military road/upper glen road) isn't lit at all. Personally, I wouldn't really be comfortable running in the pitch-black, even with a head-torch or similar, but the lit part is about 7km, with enough different paths to take to get it close to whatever distance you want

A lot of people run home from work in town1111.

I would love to run home from work - it would save a whole pile of time! My problem is that I carry, by necessity, a good bit of paperwork to and from work each day that I'd have to bring with me. What do people do with all their stuff when they run home from work? I'm guessing a back-pack, but does that not bounce up and down which would be very annoying?

You can get backpacks suitable for running :)

    Tell me more! No, seriously.

I reiterate, I am a complete newbie and worries such as "where will I put my keys" have come to me. This evening, on the advice of my OH, I put my keys and iPhone in a sock and carried the whole lot in my hand.

You say that I can get a backpack suitable for running - I figured as much, but need more details on what backpack and where best to get it. That's why I'm asking you guys - I figure you know what you're talking about. !

Btw - I really enjoyed my first run. Feel pretty darn good!

There was a post about this recently

You can also get a small wallet for your arm for keys etc.

I was posting from my phone so wasn't in the best setup to post links, as well as the two threads already posted there's also lots of other options for smaller items like these

I ran in this morning with my bew backpack for the first time: http://www.startfitness.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=3709,3839&CAT_ID=3840&P_ID=40301

I keep a sports bag in the gym in work so didn't need to bring in clothes or shower stuff or anything too adventurous. It's probably not ideal for paperwork but it did the trick for phone, wallet, packed lunch and a few necessities. My hat and gloves and jacket were also in it after 7k thanks to a red light! Nice and light and compact. Would definitely recommend if you only had a few things to worry about.

I run to and from work (Ranelagh to NCR) most days. you'll eventually get used to the back pack, just takes a little time.

If i don't run to work I tend to run a loop around the canal in the evenings - its really nice and i enjoy it - pity there wasn't a few more hills to test me!

In terms of keys / mobiles etc - i wear nike dry fit bottoms which have a back zip pocket to store stuff in....

    Enjoy!
    Jog on!
