    Hi,

has the new Ultrasn0w that can unlock the Iphone with IOS 4.1 already been released? I am terribly confused by all the Versions and restrictions atm. :(

I have an original 3GS, that has had no Software upgrade. As far as I understand I should be able to upgrade to IOS 4.1 and unlock it with the new Version of Ultrasn0w. Would that be correct, and are there any other things to be aware off? Don't wanna brick it, or the wife will kill me. :o

    Regards,
    DubDani

I'm on 4.1 on my I4 about a month now. I upgraded using tinyumbrella to preserve my baseband, then unlocked with ultrasn0w. All very easy. Google it if you can't wait.

That only works on iPhone 4 and is no good for someone on 4.1 already or downgraded to 4.0.1/2

you need to jailbreak before you can unlock, i was referring to what can jailbreak 4.2, i presume then its only a matter of adding the ultrasn0w repo and then installing the new version, when it comes out !

i'd be very wary about using this, ya need to upgrade the bb to a version that isnt released yet
no hope of a warranty if ya have to send it back to apple

guil.... at this minute do you need a mac to unlock 4.1 as you have to run PwnageTool ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭DubDani

I have to say I am hugely confused.

I have a Iphone 3GS with IOS 3.12 and 5.11.07 baseband. What do I have to do now exactly as a Windows User?

    1) Full Backup
    2) Upgrade to IOS 4.1 or 4.21 (possible preserving old Bootroom?)
    3) Jailbraking new IOS with Redsnow?
    4) Unlocking with Ultran0w
    5) Restorung the Backup

Did I miss anything, or any other advice?

    Cheers

No, you can download a hacktivated ipsw file from the internet.

If your iPhone was jailbroken before you can simple restore using this firmware

just jailbroke mine with redsn0w and unlocked via ultrasnow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭mono_mac

to jailbrake i need to download 4.1 firmware 3gs yes ? as it asks me to select firmware on red snow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭Feelgood

Right just to clarify, has anyone managed to unlock 4.1 on a 05.14.02 baseband?.

I heard the unlock was out this Sunday too using ultrasn0w and that all it would take was 2 days after 4.2 was release though tisn't working

    1) Full backup
Yes without a doubt, always do this first. Otherwise you will lose call history, texts, contacts etc. ALWAYS backup your iphone first.

    2) 2) Upgrade to IOS 4.1 or 4.21 (possible preserving old Bootroom?)
Basically the modem in your iphone has got embedded software to make it work and transmit. The level of that software is denoted by the baseband, so note that when you install a new release of the IOS it generally also upgrades the embedded software in the modem and the baseband. So every time a new IOS and baseband upgrade comes out, some elite hacker has to create an "unlock" for said baseband to allow us to unlock our iphones to any carrier network (O2, Vodafone, Three etc etc)

So basically if the baseband you are upgrading to hasn't been unlocked yet and your phone needs to be unlocked to work on any network, then you would try and preserve your baseband prior to installing the upgraded IOS.

    3) Jailbraking new IOS with Redsnow?
Not always with Redsnow, there are different versions of jailbreak software depending on the release of the IOS and the model of your iphone. To be honest if I was you I would just move up to IOS 3.1.3 and jailbreak that until 4.1 has been unlocked. 4.0 is a steaming ****pile.

The theory behind a jailbreak is you download the actual Apple legit and clean IOS firmware, you then run software like Redsnow across the IOS which jailbreaks it and the final step is flashing your iphone with the jailbroken IOS. (not all jailbreaks are the same)

So to summarise you need a copy of the IOS firmware you are looking to upgrade to and a copy of the software that jailbreaks that specific version of the IOS.

    4) Unlocking with Ultran0w
If your iphone already works with your sim card, then you DONT need to unlock you can just upgrade and jailbreak. The only reason we need unlocks is if we have a phone that is locked to a specific carrier like O2 etc and we want to use say Vodafone. Unlocking is all about the baseband, so before upgrading always check to see if your baseband has an available unlock!.

    5) Restorung the Backup
Easy part, just stick your iphone into itunes and sync. It wont bugger up anything on your newly jailbroken iphone so no need to worry. It will just restore all your crap. :)

Think that covers everything, basically a jailbreak cracks the operating system or IOS firmware allowing you to customise it or run non apple certified software.

An unlock cracks the modem firmware (baseband) allowing us to use any sim card from any network.

For us to be able to unlock a modem we need to jailbreak the IOS first....

    iPhone 3Gs
    Baseband was 05.14.02
    It was jailbroken by limera1n.

    I Uninstalled limera1n.
    Downloaded redsn0w 0.96 beta 5.
( Before doing this you might have to download an ispw either 4.1 or 4.0.1 or your preferred one.)

Then I ran ultrasn0w, click the section add iPad bootroom then voilà iPhone jailbroken.

Go to Cydia and run ultrasn0w.

    Thats it folks.

Is this easy to do, I'm a complete technophobe, so would it be advisable for me to do it, or to bring it to an unlock shop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

    download redsn0w from here http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

run it and enable ''install ipad baseband''
when its finished, install ultrasnow from cydia

ok done all that and it's just searching for network... i'm with 3 ireland and it doesn't seem to want to give me coverage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

have ya checked to see if the baseband is now 06.15.00
go to settings>about and scroll down to modem firmware
