Importing a 1977 vintage car from the UK... quick question!

If I import a vintage 1977 Ford Escort from the UK, is there still the 21% vat to pay on it? Any other charges...? How would a vintage car be valued to come to the 21% figure? No NCT, is that correct?

    No VAT.

I can't remember what they did to classic car VRT but I believe its still €50 for a car that old.

€50 VRT thats it. Road tax€48 or so.No NCT

Make sure you have the receipt for purchase and proof of date of import and that the chassis number is stamped on the body.
You must book an appointment at the NCTS within 7 days of import. If car does not have current MoT they will test it for roadworthiness and will not re-register it if it fails until it is repaired and passes.
Obviously you will need the V5C registration document too (and your PPS number and probably a Utitlity Bill for ID

Awesome stuff - is there still a lot of grief in trying to get insurance? I don't want it as a second car, though low mileage shouldn't be an issue.

you can get insurance for a classic as a first car but you'll need to shop around

I was with Brophy's in the midlands when I had the beetle. It cost about €200. This was classic insurance and was subject to me having a daily driver and limiting my annual mileage to 5k miles.

There is a classic car board here too.

    Try First Ireland.

I used them a few years back for a classic as a main car, and superfly in this thread had some luck with them recently.

Ok - thanks for all this! A couple more questions though... I don't have the car yet, as I'll be heading off to the UK next week to get it. Will they insure me before I'm the owner of the car? I'm just thinking how do I drive it back otherwise ..! Also, will the number plates be switched over to Irish ones after I pay the tax here, etc?

Assuming you get an insurance quote if you say it to them (and pay) they will probably insure you for the trip back. You might need the current UK reg number to give them.

Once back, following the VRT process you will be assigned a new reg number (you'll have a choice of ZV XXXX or 77 X 1234). It's up to you then to get a plate made up and attach it.

Good luck on your trip and let us know how it goes!

Great stuff, I'll keep you all posted! What's the difference with the ZV XXXX or the 77 X 1234 type plates? Why do they have the 2 options, and which is the one people generally choose...? Will these be in black and white/silver?

zv is an import specific series whweereas the 77x series is the current general use series. Personal preference.
You can swop to ZV at a later date but not the other way.
    Both cost the same.
IMHO you SHOULD get modern plates BUT you will 99% certain get away with whatever plates you want (my 77C has black and silver)

I see - those black and white plates are supposed to be for what dates then? Would I get to choose wherever I wanted to make up the plates?

for cars fitted with them from new strictly....you can get plates made whereever you chose.

Have a mess around with the plates they sell here, a few of us have used them:

OP, honestly with a 1977 car you can, in practice, have white, black, red plates - whatever floats your boat.

No doubt someone will tell you the "correct" format plate for 1977, though seeing as you won't have an original Irish number I say choose what colour/style you like. :)
