    Bloody Sunday 2010

You're comparing someone being knocked down to 14 people being slaughtered at a GAA stadium?

Just a slight exaggeration, don't you think?

When did the car hit him? He caused an obstruction to traffic if you want to get technical about it......although i do support him in his cause.

Was that one of our wonderfully trained ministerial Garda drivers? Are they not trained to deal with angry protesters? Oh wait he did.....

If you really want to get technical about it you should be aware that a pedestrian always has right of way, unfortunately.

I hope he's not seriously injured but generally speaking if you stand on a public road in front of a moving vehicle then there is a strong chance that vehicle will knock you down.

RTE news just now said a protestor was injured during a scuffle and taken to hospital in an ambulance. No mention that they were knocked down by a car, which the BBC report claimed.

I suspect he was referring to the murder of 13 civilians in Derry in 1972?

And to be fair, this is probably more like "a bit bruised sunday," or maybe "fractured sunday."

Whoever said pedestrians always have right of way - this has been changing in the courts recently apparently.

Regardless of what the law says, every driver knows, or at least they should know, that if a pedestrian walks into the road, runs or jumps on the road and starts playing the tambourine, it is your duty to do everything in your power not to hit them. To hit a pedestrian is the cardinal sin of driving. (And yes I recognise accidents are sometimes unavoidable)

It also refers to the DMP attack on striking workers in 1913 and the attacks on Catholics in Belfast during the war of independence. We're mad about our bloody sundays in this country.

To be honest, I've no idea what happened tonight, and I suspect most people posting here don't either. The way things were tonight, it's entirely possible the driver did everything by the book. A protester may have got too close to the car and have his foot run over. I'd imagine any car around the place would have been mobbed. On the flip side, the driver may be at fault. We don't know.

A few cases I've heard of recently have involved pedestrians being complete thicko's, and drivers acting with reasonable caution, and the case being found in favour of the driver. Things like darting out from in front of a stopped bus or between parked cars. Situations where you have zero chance to react. Something like this could have happened, but it might not have.

Back to AH mode - government better get the money to pay for yer man's hospital bill. Add that on there Lenihan.

The arrogance of the ministers and the stupidity of the guards in defending thier right to cut thier pay is staggering.

Those bastards should've been hauled from thier(taxpayer-funded) mercedes and kicked to death.

They can use the bailout to pay the inevitable PI claim

The gardai appear to have been a little heavy handed in their approach to protesters from what i've seen

Ok. Now I see the problem.

To be honest i'd say the protester brought it on their self. On the news you always see them asking for it by walking out in front of cars.

Why should there be pay cuts?

The hole in the finances is largely due to propping up the banks and ipso facto the developers who caused this mess.

The "investors" in anglo have fled the party so why should the men an women with mortages and children who dont have the option to flee..why should they have thier pay cut in order to allow the criminals to escape unharmed?

Because otherwise the country will go broke. Then there will be no money to pay anyone.

And the men and women with 100% mortgages and an extra €5,000 to buy furniture have to take a share of the blame themselves.

The country IS broke and all because the govt decided to set up NAMA to protect thier friends who had gambled(and lost) with the country's finances.

The cops and other people paying tax whilst working to pay off this gambling debt should not be hit any further...besides the economy cannot take any further cuts..the private sector is dependant on the 350,000 workers in the public sector to avail of thier services.

You do realise without the bail out, the Govt. wouldn't be able to borrow next year to pay Public Sector pay, Welfare, operations in hospitals, running schools, important stuff like that?

The Banks are part of the problem, the deficit the other part.
