Minced Beef- good source of protein?

Just cooked myself some minced beef for the first time in ages. I had about 400g worth of it. Just looked online to see what protein it has and it seems there is 20g of protein in 100g of minced beef. This means that I just had 80g of protein in one sitting which doesn't seem believable? I mean, the minced beef filled up my whole plate pretty much, but I'm struggling to believe its that high in protein. Its so easy to cook and only takes 10 mins, and is very easy to eat, I usually take ages to eat my food but I was able to eat the whole plate of beef in 5 mins. If its true that it is that high in protein then I am going to have it every second day from now on, but I'm just sceptical as I never hear it mentioned on this forum or any other fitness forum as a good source of protein. Is there a reason for this? Maybe I'm missing something and the quality of the protein isn't good or something like that?

Why is it a struggle to believe it's high in protein? Its minced cow muscle. Unfortunatly even the leanest mince has a lot of fat in it, so if I was you I'd make burgers and grill them.

You sound like a shill for a butchers. :D

Very lean mince, or minced steak is flippin' brilliant gear as a source of protein. minced round steak and round steak pieces (in beef stew) are two of my favourite reasonably priced sources of protein. I'd eat beef all day. Just be careful though. A pound of mince a go may not be so great to your digestive system.

Just because whenever there are topics on here about the best sources of protein, the talk is always about chicken and steak, but on the basis of this it seems minced beef is at least as good, maybe better because its much easier to eat more grams of minced beef than it is to eat steak or chicken.

I'd say that's just because chicken is cheap and steak is mega.

Chicken is dirt cheap and very lean. Depending on how you define "Steak", mince is ground up steak. Trust me if I had the money to eat fillet steak everyday I would, mince is grand though as long as it's round steak mince.

Not sure if chicken is cheaper than red meat.
Although i dont count regular chicken as proper meat, i only eat free range.
Think i can get a whole free range chicken for 10 euro in the butchers.Or 2 fillets for around 6 euro in tescos.

By the way is it safe to just eat all mince beef and eggs for my protein all week? i bought a load of mince from the butchers and froze it.I will be making sure i have lots of veg with this though.Im very conscious of getting enough fibre from veg these days.Ussually compliment my meals with brussel sprouts and green string beans.

Check the quality of the mince, it prob ranges from 20% fat to 5% fat.
Obviously, lower fat mince tends to have higher % of protein, even more so if you portion it by calories and not weight. if a piece of steak is 25-30% protein, then mincing it up isn't going to change this.

I'll check later, but I think the 5% stuff is about 25% protein

Half a kilo of beef eaten in 5 minutes! Did you even stop to breath or was it just all hoovered down in one sucking motion as you swept across the plate???

my advice is eat slower, and from memory 400g is a large pack. If you had something with it then you just had a massive meal!

Haha yeah it was a large pack but it doesn't seem that much when it is cooked. I didn't have anything else with it, I'm that lazy.

I'm the slowest eater in the world, but I'm able to eat mince meat really fast, its just very easy to eat, not much chewing required.

I think it's fair to say that lean cuts of meat will have about 25g of protein per 100g (cooked weight).

Some more, some less but 25g is a decent average IMO.

As for eating 400g of mince - I think with dedication and training you could get this up to a kilo! :D

Ideally pace your meals but having 400g+ of meat in the odd meal is not a major issue just not too often.

Lads, I don't mean to go off topic but isn't there some way you can wash mince to reduce the fat content of it ?

When you boil mince and drain it you'll see a ****load of fat in the runoff.

Brown mince, place in collander, pour kettle of hot water over.

Not really to be honest. Especially if you are using it in a chilli or something. Any difference would be completley masked.

Turkey mince is very good too. A lot leaner i find. Dunnes do 800 grams or a kilo for 6 euro. Can't remember the weight. Anyways it's in a 2 for 6 section and they have minced beef, turkey steaks, salmon and burgers as well in the offer.
