Pope Benedict XVI has said the use of condoms is acceptable in exceptional circumstances, according to a new book.

He said condoms could reduce the risk of HIV infection, such as for a male prostitute, in a series of interviews given to a German journalist.

But he said a more humane attitude to sexuality, and not condom use, was the proper way to combat HIV infection.

The comments were made in a new book, which the Vatican newspaper ran excerpts of in its Saturday edition.

I can at last have no guilt about being a catholic male prostitute now. :pac:

A "more humane attitude to sexuality" would be rejecting everything this mysoginistic, homophobic, backward organisation says on the subject (of which it knows nothing).

Yeah but Venom were an influence on the then-nascent black metal scene. I've also heard Nuclear Assault couldnt cut it live, and their comeback was a bit of a disaster.

Hey, we just derailed a thread on the pope by talking about Metal!!!!

To be fair, his previous message wasn't 'Go out and have sex without a condom. You won't get AIDS, guys!'. His message was 'don't use a condom, wait until you're in a loving marraige and make lots of catholic babies.'

    Thank fcuk!

The amount of harm that stance has caused in Sub-Saharan Africa is unreal.

    Why specifically male prostitute?
    Why not female?
Why not sexually active middle aged socialites?
    Why not choir boys?

The day I let my sexual conduct be dictated by an eighty year old celebate frock-wearing ex-member of the Hitler youth who believes that the only way to spiritual salvation is by digesting the actual flesh and blood of a 2,000 year old Jew is the day I take cookery tips from Jeffrey Dahmer.

Thats a bit simplistic. The bush administration refused to fund HIV programs in africa which promoted the use of condoms, hence less condoms in areas with up to 20% infection rate.

Thats one stupid man jeopardizing the lives of millions.

The Catholicism causes AIDS in the part of Africa which is overwhelmingly protestant Big Lie is still going strong amongst the empirically and geographically challenged.

In any case it is unlikely that people in Africa were missing the main part of the rule - no sex before marriage - and getting Catholic about the not wearing of condoms. Anti-comdoms is an african thing, regardless of religion.

*sigh* Catholicism did not cause AIDS, HIV resulted in AIDS, Christian views are making it hard for groups educating and helping those on the ground not to contract HIV by rubbishing an element which is proven to aid in the reduction of new cases, influencing aid giving countries. It may be the case that it is quite unlikely in some areas of Africa that a woman have sex before marriage, but a lot of the time her husband does, before and during. Preaching abstinence isn't going to help that woman.
Why is it never the fault of Africans?

Never said that, if you look at the stats for how different African nations faired in tackling HIV you will see that countries with good governmental capabilities who chose to face the problem head on faired insanely better than countries like South Africa, where the minister for health recommended beetroot as a cure. Leadership within a country is by far the largest factor in tackling HIV, and many African nations failed here, however it is not the only element required to get HIV under control and is pretty useless without resources.

I'm aware that I'm in AH and the chances that anyone will take this seriously. For my own (somewhat) ease of conscience, however, I am posting a link to the actual meaning of Pope Benedict's words.
