Heys guys is there any core strength exercises I can add in to improve my overhead press?Once I get to 60kg and a bit more with barbell presses my core shakes around like a wet fish:rolleyes:.I try to get a big belly of air and push my head through but that only helps with locking the weight out.I can press about 10kg more seated than standing.

Did anyone have the same problem an d how did they go about fixing it?

    A bit.

Concentrated on squeezing my glutes and legs hard at the set up.
The lower back and lats so that I have a stable base to press off.

And another nice cue i got from Will at CFI, was to pull your rib cage down to keep your abs engaged as you drive the bar up.

And my abs are piss weak.

I am of course parroting coaches and Bill Starr articles here.

The lads at 70sbig are fairly forthright about wearing a belt when pressin, maybe that's your answer?

Sorry to hijack a bit here.

I only recently realised there was some many varietys of the OH press.

I am thinking of giving this one a go:

Anyone see a reason not to?

I can think of a couple Brian.

    1) Increased instance of people telling you how you are gonna break your back.

    2) As you are basically using a stretch reflex, why not just push press.

    3) Naysaying baxtards will always question your press figures.

Basically you should military press everything.
    Strict Feet together.

    Derp.

I think Mr. Starr has covered that nicely in another article.

I currently push press, so there. I thought I might be able to move more weight this way.

I'd like to see them question figures I never give out.

If that was the case, no one would bench with an exaggerated arch in their back wearing a multi ply suit.

    No, not even a bit.

Edit: Actually a little bit. I meant that I want to move more weight overhead and am not that bothered if it doesn't meet with some peoples ideas of how it should be done.

I must try them out with my belt next time I do them.

    Interesting article btw.

I do ab pulldowns once a week.Perhaps upping the frequency on them will help.

OP, you may be doing this already, but bend your knees a little bit when your pressing. Your legs will help stabilise you and will releive some of the pressure on your core.

Thanks for the advice.I think I start off with bent knees but If the bar speed slows down sometimes my knees lock. That could be part of whats making me lose my tightness.I'll be mindfull of that in future.:)

I found the belt helps. Keeps my abs nice and tight and because of that i can get my glutes tensed and concenrate more on driving up with my lats and delts.

Also doing the push press instead or as well for a while helped me with the bottom part of the lift. Gave me a bit more burst strength and speed. Switched to the front squat as well. After doing both of those i was able to increase the weight on the press.
