Daniel Day Lewis will play Abraham Lincoln in an adaption of the pulitzer prize winning book 'Team of Rivals' by Doris Kearns and Steven Spielberg is set to direct!

I think this is great casting, Daniel Day Lewis is such an amazing actor, I can see him making more out of this role than pretty much anyone else I can think of, am looking forward to it, especially with Spielberg at the helm!

Damn, was hoping it would be Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

He gets crazy into character when preparing, wonder what he'll do to prepare for it. On the set of gangs of new york he wouldn't talk to Leonardo DiCaprio for months and had everyone call him Bill for the whole duration, on and of set. He done something else really OTT when preparing for my left foot. What makes him so good

I was sad when I heard Neeson was dropping out, but this is great news. DDL will make a meal out of this role. It'll be interesting to see (or hear) what he does with the voice. I'm guessing Spielberg will have to rein him in a bit. An historically accurate Lincoln voice would probably be too grating.

Good to see some movement on this film. Spielberg has been dithering over it for what seems like forever. Kushner is writing it though so it should be good.

Day Lewis will probably actually travel back in time and spend a few months hanging out with Abe himself, consumate professional is Dan

What happened with Neeson? I thought he was attached to this role with quite some time.

Anyways another Oscar nom and win maybe for the great DDL no doubt

There's an old joke that DDL was cast as Kraven in the Spider-man franchise but was fired after he buried Tobey MaGuire alive. :p

Fields is bizare casting. She's what, mid-60s now? She's way too old for this part.

Yes this is strange casting, Sally seems to be more on tv these days than films, her last movie role was Legally Blonde 2.

She is about 10 years older than DDL I think (Mary was suppose to be 9 years younger than Abe)

Joan Allen, Emily Watson or Laura Linney would be my choices for Mary

I like the idea of DDL as Lincoln but I'm not as keen on the whole Speilberg directing part.

I think Spielberg will be alright, but I dont know what he's thinking casting Fields. I assume the film will be covering up to 1865 when Lincoln was assassinated. But Mary was only in her 40s then. I know people looked older back then but come on. However, I haven't seen Fields in anything recently so, I don't know, maybe she's looking really good for her age.

Maybe she will narrate it.Abe can't....unless he says......"oh and it was a wonderful show but I didn't catch the end.....are those my brains?".

Why did Neeson not get the role? He's been talking about how much he was looking forward to this for years. Day Lewis will be excellent as always though.

Delighted to see Spielberg back directing again. All he seems to do these days is produce endlessly. Crystal Skull aside he hasn't directed since Munich 6 years ago.

Neeson had the role and pulled out. He said he thought he was getting too old to play the part. However, he seems to be shying away from interesting dramatic roles now days in favour of paycheck movies.

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/movies/news/a327139/david-strathairn-joins-steven-spielbergs-lincoln.html

David Strathairn has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg's biopic Lincoln, it has been announced.
The Temple Grandin star will play the abolitionist William Seward, who served as a member of the president's war cabinet, Deadline reports.
Lincoln is based on the non-fiction account Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns, which centres on inter-cabinet rivalries ahead of the Civil War.
The actor will be joining confirmed cast members Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field, who will play the president and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln respectively.
Tommy Lee Jones was reportedly being considered for the role of anti-slavery campaigner Thaddeus Stevens, while James Spader and Joseph Gordon Levitt were also rumoured to be in negotiations.

I feel nervous about this for some reason. It's not got anything to do with Daniel Day-Lewis (I love him), I think it's the fact that Spielberg is involved. I feel like he's gonna make it really cheesy or something.

Jared Harris may be British, but he still has the acting chops to play a former U.S. general and president. According to Variety, Harris has just been cast as Ulysses S. Grant in Steven Spielberg's historical biopic, 'Lincoln' The film focuses on Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day Lewis) during the end of the Civil War. Harris, most recently known for his role as Lane Pryce in 'Mad Men,' has starred in a variety of films, such as 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' Mr. Deeds' and 'Natural Born Killers.' In 'Lincoln,' he will play Grant before he became president (Lincoln was the 16th, Grant the 18th).

Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln - first picture

Day-Lewis's next role will cast him as the iconic 16th President of the USA.

Based on Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals, the movie focuses on the last few months of Lincoln's presidency and life. Goodwin adapted the script with Tony Kushner.

Tommy Lee Jones is appearing in the role of Republican leader Thaddeus Stevens, with James Spader and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also involved.

Liam Neeson was originally attached to the starring role.

Shooting for Lincoln began in October.

The movie is slated for release in December 2012.

It'll be strange yet refreshing to watch Day-Lewis play (in effect) a good man for once. It feels like all his more recent performances - what few there are - have been playing complex, yet ultimately despicable monsters. It's doubly interesting as Lincoln is one of those historical figures very easily mocked & played as a pastiche, when portrayed in film / TV; I'm curious as to how Day-Lewis will play it.

Also: I only discovered last night that Jared Harris was Richard Harris' son. You learn something new every day, even if it was kinda obvious just looking at Jared's face.

Seeing as he's a method actor, what techniques would you say he is using? Seriously, will he go around acting like Lincoln to everyone or something?

Apparently he's been in character since March and his name isn't even down on the call sheet.

It's interesting to think what he's been doing to get into character. Every morning does he come down for breakfast, pull out a chair, stand on it and give an inspirational speech?

    'Cos that would be sweet.

I wouldn't read too much into the fact that his name isn't on the call sheets. Afaik that's the norm for big actors. They use the character's name instead.

    Abraham Lincoln: Fourscore and...

    [looks at his pocket watch]

Abraham Lincoln: seven minutes ago... we, your forefathers, were brought forth upon a most excellent adventure conceived by our new friends, Bill... and Ted. These two great gentlemen are dedicated to a proposition which was true in my time, just as it's true today. Be excellent to each other. And... PARTY ON, DUDES!

That's kind of the opposite to what I want to see, a bit of controversy would ensure me in that cinema seat when it's released!

i.e. apparently the man himself was never a huge fan of African Americans, and that the Emancipation Proclamation was more of a strategy than him wanting to free the slaves.

    Or,
"Lincoln actually had a high, twangy voice."
    http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Ask-an-Expert-What-Did-Abraham-Lincolns-Voice-Sound-Like.html

    Or, there's also this...
"While Lincoln was married, psychologist C. A. Tripp has observed that Lincoln's problematic and distant relationship with women stood in contrast to his more warm relations with a number of men in his life and that two of those relationships had possible homosexual overtones"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexuality_of_Abraham_Lincoln

Basically, I'm really hoping that Spielberg / Day-Lewis haven't just opened an American high-schooler's history book, and put that straight onto the screen.

He would make a great Ahab, that's a role that would suit him down to the ground, scenery chewing iconic character.
