Munster coach Tony McGahan has made just two changes to the starting XV for the Magners League clash with Scarlets at Musgrave Park on Sunday (5.35pm).

With Keith Earls called into the Ireland squad, Barry Murphy takes over at outside centre while Alan Quinlan returns to the side at the expense of Peter O'Mahony.

After the euphoria of the early week victory however, skipper on the night James Coughlan's sights are firmly set on Sunday night's encounter with the Scarlets.

“This is week 22 of our season, it will be our eighth Magners League game. We’ve worked hard to get to the top of the league. We’ve only lost once so far, to Leinster, and we don’t want to lose our grip on top spot.

“There's a four point gap between ourselves and the Scarlets at the top of the table, but this game is a case of getting back to reality for the squad. Scarlets and ourselves are both missing some key players, but what Tuesday night proved is we have a lot of talented youngsters who are ready to take their chance in the Munster jersey.

"But that was a one-off. We can reflect and enjoy it at another stage. This weekend is about league points and maintaining our Magner League momentum.

    Munster:
    J Murphy; D Howlett, B Murphy, S Tuitupou, D Hurley; P Warwick, D Williams;
    W du Preez, D Varley, P Borlase; B Holland, I Nagle; A Quinlan, N Ronan, J Coughlan.

    Replacements: M Sherry, D Ryan, S Archer, P O'Mahony, T O'Donnell, C Murray, T Gleeson, S Deasy.

    Scarlets:
Daniel Evans, Morgan Stoddart, Gareth Maule, Regan King, Lee Williams, Rhys Priestland, Martin Roberts,
Iestyn Thomas, Ken Owens, Peter Edwards, Lou Reed, Dominic Day, Aaron Shingler, Johnathan Edwards (capt), Ben Morgan.

Replacements: Emyr Phillips, Phil John, Simon Gardner, Damian Welch, Jonny Fa'amatuainu, Tavis Knoyle, Dan Newton, Scott Williams.

Let's hope Munster can carry on the form they showed when they 'bate' Australia. :p

Big game for Barry Murphy, this will be his first start for more than 12 months. The guy has been an injury nightmare for a long time now, I hope he gets a clean run of games because on form he can be a very useful squad player. This is a big opportunity for Ian Nagle, he's on a development contract now but if he keeps up his brilliant form I've no doubt he'll be a full member of the squad within 1/2 years.

The Scarlets have been the most improved side in the ML this season IMO. Last season they were woeful and couldn't win games (nine losing BPs). They have improved immensely so far this year and have been playing a fantastic brand of rugby. They are missing Stephen Jones, Matthew Rees and George North but their replacements are all decent players. The guts of that backline ran Perpignan ragged in the Heineken Cup.

I'm thinking Munster by 6-10 points. It will be a tough task.

It'll be a big ask with a 5 day turn around, delighted to see McGahan keep the faith with some of the younger players and also to see the return of Barry Murphy

Looking forward to seeing Murphy back at centre, hopefully, he'll get a decent run of games.

Very average Scarlets pack. Munster should control this game.

BTW this game as well as Cardiff vs Ulster are on 301 Freeview - a full 4 hours of uninterrupted rugby if you're interested.

Yup, Cardiff vs Ulster is on S4C, kickoff at 3:45.

We've really been saturated with rugby this weekend haven't we? Wales vs Fiji/Leinster vs Dragons on Friday night, 5 internationals yesterday and 2 ML games today.

Gone for Munster -9, hoping it will make up for losing on Ireland +15 yesterday.

Would like to see what Borlase can bring tonight. I have high hopes for him.

    Cardiff vs Ulster
Craig Gilroy, the first player to score a try at the Aviva (Combined U20s game) just scored for Ulster on his Ulster debut, in reply to Laulala's opening try.

    Cardiff 7 Ulster 5, 20 minutes gone.

Munster by -9 looks good to me - I'm really looking forward to this one as another great rugby weekend winds down. Can next week come close? I pity poor Wales next Saturday - extinction beckons. :D

Jesus christ, what are we taking tap penalties in our 22 for?

2 misses from Priestland now. Munster not in the game at all as yet.

    Awesome tackle from Howlett. :)

Yellow card for Scarlets number 9, think it was harsh tbh.

Am I the only one watching this? :D

    Warwick misses a kick.

Munster rumbling well deep in Scarlets territory and Warick wastefully grubbers in the 22 wtf just hold the ball in hand.
I cannot understand why possession is given away so bloody cheaply

    Yeah, BBC Wales.

    Warwick replies, 3-3.

Duncan Williams off, Conor Murray on.

3-3 as Warwick gets a penalty. Thomond do you think PP will be giving refunds on the basis of all our withdrawals? :D Sherry playing well.

I think we have a post Australia hangover. We're taking our time getting into this. A lot of injuries before kick off and now Williams is off being replaced by Connor Murray. He's a good prospect, very big and physical a la Mike Phillips, a good goal kicker too.

this didn't work for me. This way got me all the scottish ones

    freq - 10.803
    polar - h
    symb rate - 22.0
    5/6

An easy way to get bbc wales, unplug your box, take out your card, turn back on the box and go to channel 991. This way also gets you most of the bbc channels

This will be a tapover 3 points but we really should have scored a try.

Great carry from O'Mahony, he was really close.

Murray really is our own Mike Phillips, big guy for a scrum half. Got the hair too. :D

    6-3

Warwick try. Fantastic break from Coughlan earlier in the move (pass on a plate from Warwick). Good recycling and the Scarlets defence was stretched.

    13-6

Warwick in for a try following a great Munster break and adds the conversion!:D

    Good stuff from Coughlan.
Strange game, I hate to say it but I'd like to see more scrums, mainly to see how Borlase gets on. Conditions are perfect and fortunately the handling has been decent overall.

agreed, if I had to complain I think it was Tipu who nearly butchered it in corner, by deciding to just run into people instead of offload for the try? Could have thrown it away there.

Great defence from Munster. Scarlets going left and right but going nowhere.

Edit: Spoke too soon. Scarlets try.

    HT: 13 - 13

His pass is as sweet as Stringers, without wanting to sound cruel I hope Williams stays out of the team.

His pass is as sweet as Stringers, without wanting to sound cruel I hope Williams stays out of the team.

If he's good enough he'll get on ahead of Williams. He's playing well but he's getting supplied some excellent ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Anytime I've seen O'Mahony he seems to give away penalties. That's 2 tonight.

Coughlan is everywhere tonight, outstanding performance.

Edit: And now O'Mahony is in the bin.

I wonder if he will, considering Williams is on a full contract and Murray is still in the academy.

    13-16 now. I'm worried.

    Warwick converts. 20 - 16, 49 minutes gone.

Barry Murphy is playing well considering he hasn't played much at this level for a few seasons
