I've been country wide this week and haven't seen one yet and from what i'm hearing there aren't as many vans on the road as we were led to believe in the first place. Has anyone else seen them around?

Done about 800km this week and not a single one.... kinda dissapointed.

There are 15 vans working 24hrs a day if you believe the news?

I had one driving in front of me from Cavan to Virginia yesterday and I spotted one on the same road on the way back this evening!

Let's just say it was the longest journey of my life! Watching the clock the whole way :p

they cant do anything if they are driving, they need to be stopped and stationary for them to catch you

    (afaik :D )

1200km. No vans. Gone through a fair few 'enforcement zones', including a rare few with the new signs up.

By the way what i have seen as well is the guards perched on the bridges over the motorway at moate twice in the last three days. Am i to take it these new gatso vans are freeing up the guards to concentrate on making money off the motorways? Oh sorry, i meant making them safer & saving lives.....you know, the way our motorways are death traps & all that.

I have seen one, a red transit with a 10-KY reg outside Tipperary town yesterday.

Contrary to what I have heard on the radio and seen on the news, it was not liveried up with reflective stripes and was very, very hard to spot until you were upon it.

This is what these vans are encouraging.

I hate that road and its ridiculous speed limit...so I refuse to use it!

Talk about generating money, they'll be on that road like flies on sh*t.

On the contrary - not safe at all!
My guess is you should be spending more time watching the road!

Walked past a white marked garda van with the camera out the back on the South Circular road just outside the Mosque on Tuesday morning with cones around it! There are also 8 marked garda vans as well as the gatso vans.http://www.garda.ie/Controller.aspx?Page=106&Lang=1
Obviously these 8 garda vans are not limited to the roads marked on Garda website for the gatso vans.
    Beware!:D

I've seen a few this week; A white one near the Curragh racecourse; a silverish one hidden away on the N7 going southbound past Rathcoole (positioned right at the sudden speed limit drop to 60 kmph for the roadworks), and a Garda speed van Parked up southbound on the same stretch near the Naas exit.

With the exception of the Garda Vehicle, they were indistinguishable from regular vans.

Saw a Navy Transit (looked almost matt finish?) on the N55 near Glasson (monitoring Ballymahon to Athlone direction it seemed) on Tuesday. Didn't catch the reg but you couldn't miss it, it looked like the camera unit is mounted on the roof.
There were meant to be 46 units from the off but I heard during the week that only 15 are operational at the minute.

    More to the point.

Has anyone seen one of these vans in an area not listed on the Garda website ?

Anyone have any idea how close you have to be for them to clock ya. I've heard can be up to half a km but I know the Garda vans were 100ft any info would be great!

I've read up to 1km although you have to be within 100m for them to get your reg no.

If you think it's safe to do so, turn around before you get within 100m of the van if you think you were speeding and take an alternative route. I know this is what I'd do.

Am I right in assuming that gosafe is not operating in Dublin Area yet?

I passed this stretch yesterday at approx 10:30 an there was an unmarked navy van (transit i think) pulled in facing the Urlingford side and I passed back this way at approx 14:45 and the van was replaced with a blue van with all the stickers etc on it. I though it was strange.

    why switch them?

Was travelling between Portlaoise and Abbeyleix today at 2pm. Spotted 2 vans within 3 miles of each other neither with any markings. Returning an hour later spotted on the same road spotted another 2. One with markings the other without.

I seen the same thing outside of protarlingtin, i think the van with the markings on it is used for night time as it has a lot of reflective stickers on it

I was behind in a row of 4 cars behind a navy Transit unmarked, but it was travelling at 50mph so I overtook it and was up at 70 till I passed and then slowed to the speed limit so fingers crossed I dont get a letter in the post soon!

The cameras cannot operate while the van is in motion.

Its safe enough to know tis a money making racket. These 'safety' cameras can spot you from a kilometer away. When you try to keep to these stupid limits its nearly impossible. Anyway-its all about safety-We know this coz our government told us.Safety me arse. A money making racket akin to an old skool chicago gangster.

One on the Dundalk-Castleblaney Road, on a straight section between Cullaville and Dundalk.

Good to see them around anyway!

Edit: Marked well - orangle reflectors, camera symbol on it.

Nonsense, these use the same technology as what's currently out there. It's using the Redflex Radarcam system and use low powered K band RADAR, same as the others, GATSO and Multanova.

2 vans in Strokestown Co Roscommon ALL DAT Friday.
First on parked in the town?, heading towards Elphin/Carrick On Shannon,
Second parked inside the 50 zone (still in town) on the N5 West towards Tulsk.
    Safety.......Salary Safety me thinks.

do they only track the speed of the traffic on one side of the road or both, ie. the traffic driving towards the rear of the vans.

saw a yellow one just outside listowel friday night at 10 pm

Ok. So what is the range and how close must you be before they can note your reg number ?
