    Hi All,

Hope you are well and keeping fit ...
You probably think it’s a bit early to be talking about the Wicklow Gaol break Half Marathon & 10km... Well, the first bit of news is that we have moved the date for 2011 to the 27th of March. It’s the first Half Marathon in 2011 (going on last years calendar). There is a bit of detail here so

    In summary:
    · There is an early bird offer until Dec 25th
    · There is a special offer you can avail of
    · Few more improvements/ points to the race to mention
    · A new course
    · New prize structure

*The 27th of March is a Sunday unlike last year. So you can park in and around the town if you so wish. The other car parks used last year will also be available*
Btw - many of the improvements are from feedback and observation from other races

Early Bird is €35 until Dec 25th then it goes to €40. Naturally you will be wondering what’s on offer for this: Race number, Technical Training Top, Shower in Coral Leisure Centre, Timing Chip, Finishers Medal, 4 x aid stations including bottled water, DJ at the Gaol for atmosphere, Soup + Sandwiches Tea & Coffee afterwards in the Grand Hotel, *Everyone receives a Release Cert. from Goal* Accurately measured course.

We have a new prize fund structure. Its 1-3 in Senior, Vets and Masters M+F with a pot of €2,100
There are new courses for the 10km and Half marathon. The new routes were developed in accordance with Garda feedback. For the Half we have taken out the long out and back (there is a shorter section that is out and back but the views out to the lighthouse on both sides are amazing). In fact the scenery for the half marathon has gone up a few notches to rival the best of them.

The special offer mentioned is not on the website just yet (I will notify you when it appears) but to give you the heads up. There is a link to other races I am involved in. Should you be one of the first 40 people to enter 3 of the 6 races you will receive a €50 voucher from Amphibian King.
(To put a number on it: if you enter 3 x the Half marathons on the early bird it will cost you €50 for the 3 races if you avail of the voucher. Note: there are a few T&C’s but they are straight forward)

There are training tips on the Wicklow website. If you are new to running I’d recommend a read some evening. I noted looking at the Dublin Marathon so many people were making life very difficult for themselves. I bet you’ll get at least one nugget from them.

It’s no secret that Wicklow isn’t a flat Town or County for that matter. The 10km is average for hills but the Half does have a few testers that reward. “The higher the climb the better the view”. Being an early half marathon it’s ideal to incorporate the hill work in your training by putting a gradient on the treadmill or simply getting out on the hills. Try this bit of focus once a week and then test it – it will pay dividends for future faster races in 2011.

Start your training plan with a purpose in 2011..or simply get more active
Prepare yourself early in the season with hill work to build stamina and enjoy strengthened
muscles reducing the risk of injury for continued racing and better results later in 2011.

The website will be getting a small makeover. There will be a Facebook page up that I’d encourage you to join if you’d like to receive updates that might be of interest to you. You can join now if you wish
    http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Wicklow-Gaol-Break-half-marathon-10km/169277123091847?v=wall

The race is now open www.wicklowhalfmarathonand10km.com
    All the best
    Eoin

The IMRA Wicklow way trail race (25k) was end of March this year. Got a great turn out (20 quid, including bus transport and finishers mug). Liable to be on a similar date next year when schedule is finalised shortly. Hope to see you on the start line RQ :)

Might give the half a go. Eoin is the multimarathon going to be a full thiS year?

Wouldn't mind doing the half and the trail run that SJ has mentioned. Does anyone think these events are too close for someone doing the Connemara full in April???? Suggestions please!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

Good Man Slogger. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Bearing in mind the IMRA date isn't finalised yet and considering you know the commitee maybe you might bring this to their attention so we don't have an unfortunate clash. Then Ruarl Runner can participate in both.... :)

    Hi Oisin,

What you think yourself... Would you like to do it if it was? Maybe if we had pacers for 3.15 hrs / 3.30hrs / 3.45hrs and 4hrs to set a target for people.
In reality I don't know if there would be a demand....
If people are interested I'd like to know. Its a bit off topic for Wicklow here so maybe PM me or start a new thread and we'll see where it takes us...
Short ans is yes it can be done - but do people want it????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭Oisin11178

Yeah i would 100% do it. I take your point about numbers. How many would make it viaable?
    Ill start a thread.

Hi Ruarl R. I thought someone would get back to you....
It depends whats your ambition in racing is. Are you up for a PB in the marathon and its your A race of the year? If so then I'd suggest you should only do one of the said events prior as you are one week away from your Marathon taper week.
If you are doing the run for the love of participation then its up to you knowing your own level of fitness and what you can squeeze inbetween

    Hi Eoin,

Why is the price so high for a 10k run? If you don't avail of the early bird it's €40? Other events such as Tri Athy cost €42 and that's for a triathlon.

Same date as Dunboyne 4 Mile. This will detract from your numbers.

    Mmmmmmmm!!
Thanks Eoin, I am doing Connemara full in April, New York in November and possibly Longford in August... Defo won't be looking for a PB in either the HM or the trail run (that SJ referred to). Primary focus will be on the marathons, seriously considering these as a nice alternative to the routine LSR's... Would be ideal if these events (i) were earlier in the month and/or (ii) these events didn't clash ;)

Sorry - my fault. I should have included that the 10k is €25.

Firstly a reminder that the early bird for Wicklow ends on the 25th Dec

    Special offer:
If you are one of the first 40 to enter 3 of these events you will receive a €50 voucher from Amphibian King. You will find the link on any of the 4 websites below to take you to this info page with more details (including the T&C's - worth a quick read before you dive in).

    A reminder of the events:
Wicklow Half Marathon & 10km, 27th March www.wicklowhalfmarathonand10km.com Early bird ends Dec 25th
Wexford Half Marathon, 22nd May www.wexfordhalfmarathon.com Early Bird ends Jan 15th
Irish Multimarathon (Clontarf Half Marathon) 3rd July www.irishmultimarathon.com
    Dublin 10km 24th July www.dublin10km.com

Putting a number on it - if you enter the 3 half marathons on the early birds it will end up costing you €50 when you receive the €50 voucher. Note: the closing dates for the early birds (above). Cheaper still if one of your entries is for a 10km.
Reminder: first 40 people to go through the motions will get the voucher.

(fyi: The Craic Adventure Race and Eireman X are not opened yet. (the Craic website isn't ready at this moment in time)

This is a new initiative that I'm delighted to introduce. There are a few more significant initiatives/ changes/ improvements happening with the core events listed above. In summary

    Wicklow - new course. Scenic
Wexford - new flatter, faster, cheaper course
Irish Multimarathon - New name: Clontarf Half Marathon (revamp)
Dublin 10km - try and repeat that goodie bag

Happy Christmas and hopefully 2011 will be a good year in General

    Eoin

Sorry to hear the HM has had to be called off, looked forward to tackling those hills! Probably run the 10k anyway.

Safety seemingly. I know they'd changed the course to take out the long out and back section, looked like it would now go out towards the lighthouse and around so maybe that's where the problem was...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭annieee

Aw, that is a shame. Was looking forward to giving the half marathon a go. Sorry to hear it has been called off. Will be there for the 10k anyway. Hopefully I'll improve on last years time (wouldn't be hard! :o)

Ah no, that's a pity. I planned on doing this half, and booked a hotel only a few days ago. Ah well, I'll just have to find another half to aim for.

A bummer this as it went right by my house and perfect prep for London marathon. I wonder why not revert to last years route?
Any other half's around or before this date?. I know Omagh is on the following Sat but that may be too close for London

Larne is on March 19th - Joe from the club ran last year if you need some insight.

To be honest, I'm kind of glad that the half marathon has been cancelled. It gives me more time to train. I had a long lay off after the Dublin marathon after a bad sciatic nerve problem. Back training now so running the 10k would be better for me personally at this stage.

I was wondering how how it would take you to jump on that. You surprised me - just 42 mins!;):D:D

2 mins of which were spent typing and 40 agonizing if I was too much like a broken record before hitting "send":o

Yea, the Half had to be pulled. Participants have been notified. Many have opted for the 10km or a swap to Wexford half marathon. It's a pity, but sure....

Anyway on a more up beat note the 10km will be fairly lively now as heads are concentrated on this race

So its now the Wicklow Goal break 10km..... I jest. Most call it 'Goal' rather than Gaol (or Jail as we know it).
I do make a few spelling mistakes but I'm innocent on this word...

Ah yeah we won't start insult throwing, the only thing i will say is that Eoin is very efficient and on the ball sending out prizes etc, whereas that Irish fit guy is infamous the other way - i was in the prizes at his santa race two years ago and got nothing in the post, even though he said it would be sent out, when i emailed him he said it was still in the post but have never heard anything to this day - the post must be quare slow:D

    Hi All,

I signed up for this race thinking I'd be able to run it but unfortunately Ryanair have decided to change my flight times so can't do it :( Am gutted as was really looking forward to it, hopefully next year. However, this means that I have a race number available if someone was thinking of running but hadn't yet signed up? I'm not looking for money for the number, hence I didn't put it up on adverts, just would like the number to go to use. Let me know if anyone would like it and I can mail on details re changing name over (organisers mailed me back with info, name change is no issue)

    Thanks!

Wow! that has taken me by surprise. Thanks for the heads up.
Thats disappointing. Naturally I'm gonna contact the bloke. Suffice to say if he changes it you'll know he played ball... Lets leave it at that.

Prizes and categories are on the website www.wicklowhalfmarathonand10km.com

Its gonna be cups. If you arrive hydrated and taking into account its still cool in March most won't use the aid station for a 10km. Few sips and chuck it in the bin.

T-minus 6 days. There will be a warm up as well in the Jail courtyard before you are called to post

You missed the other 2 Prize categories. Why not post them up as well? Do a sum of the total prizes (male and female) and then if you still don't like it - give out to me then.
I think thats a reasonable course of action
