Sleep Problems

I don't know how I've left myself get so bad.

The problem is not that I can't sleep, but when I can sleep. I seem to have somehow shifted my sleep patterns from say 11/12 - 7/8 to maybe 5/6am - 2/3pm.

I had an important politics midterm worth 15% this morning that I did my best to wake up for and I couldn't. No matter how tired I was, I couldn't sleep until 5am and while I woke up briefly at 6am due to an alarm going off, my STUPID habit of pressing the snooze button resulted in me sleeping until 8.55 and my exam starts at 9. It's still on as we speak but I'd never make it in. It's only a class test so it's 45minutes long. I'd be in at 9.40 at the earliest.

I'm so stupid. Not only have I thrown away 15%, but I've probably seriously jeopardised my chances of going on erasmus next year too. I'm in 2nd year and I really want to go away next year but I doubt the college are going to look too favourably on me not showing up to a midterm because I couldn't get up in time.

This has been a serious problem for me for the last few weeks and it all came to a head today really. I really need help but anything anyone tries to tell me just washes right over me.

When you cant sleep, what do you do? Do you take stimulants like coffee, coke, or red bull durning the day or in the evening? Would you say you feel stressed by your life right now?

Those are important things to look at when figuring out why you cant sleep.

Exercise. Most important and effective thing you can do is get out in the fresh air and get some exercise. And cut out stimulants as Oryx said

I've fallen into the same trap on occasion. I found a good way of "resetting the clock" was to force myself to stay awake and only go to bed at the 'right' time. So instead of going to bed at 5-6am, stay awake all night and day, then go to bed at around 8-9pm. Falling asleep at that stage won't be a problem, and you should be good to get up around 9 the following morning. Then try and stick to the regular schedule.

    But get some exercise!

I've had similar issues. The staying up all day/all night (as suggested above) has worked for me before, as does slowly rotating my sleep schedule 'later' over the course of like a week, until it's normal again.

However, I've also found this guys approach useful:
    http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/04/how-to-get-up-right-away-when-your-alarm-goes-off/

He suggests training yourself to get out of bed when the alarm goes off by practicing when you're not in bed. It sounds a bit odd, but it actually worked for me.

Put the alarm away from the bed so you have to get up to turn it off, and just stay up!! once you start getting up early every day you will gradually get your old routine back and be able to sleep at night, if you dont get up until 3 in the day you are not going to be able to sleep at 11/12!
