I have a sneaking suspicion they're trying to make it look like the EU is forcing them to take the bailout.

"We would be grand without the bailout Mr Van Rompuy! But then again, if you insist I suppose we should. But be it on your head if anything goes wrong!"

    :P

Can we not just have the Brits back? We've proven we can't run our own affairs but it would be better to have a country were we have more in common with culturaly like England than someone like Germany running the state.

Well Irish bond yields have risen yet again today, a bailout (perhaps not a sovereign one) of some sort looks inevitable now.

damn the lot of us for letting the biggest protest in the past 2/3 years be the pensioners against the medical card! i tried my bit to stir up a responce against our government and all I got was grief grief and more grief from people I'm sure have been effected by now!! hell I even had one smart arse tried to smear my name just to shut me up!

we deserve everything we get from now on cos as a "Nation" we're the lazyest, spineless, most out of touch with reality bunch of opinionated **** in Europe! I wish we had no broadband in this country cos then we might have seen a real effort and not virtual text rebellions!

I am going to heat the popcorn for another televised sham of a statement to come from a man I wouldn't let run a bath in my rented apartment!

Same post in two different threads, why don't you just move to the UK & let the rest of us get on with it.

By the way, Cowen has just said that as it stands we have not applied for a sovereign bailout from the EU at Leaders Questions in Leinster House.

The speech is more likely to be a statement of affairs or else announcement of a bank bailout of some sort, and not an actual bailout.

Enda Kenny is giving a very impressive speech right now, urging the Taoiseach to go to Aras an Uachtaran and telling him he has lost all authority.

    Or "It's my JOB".

This morning he was giving out about the media using "perjoratives" like "bailout".
This means he is taking it. But gonna call it something else.

jeez man why don't you spend as much effort pointing out government failings or do you prefer to only attack your own?

the government has been sayin the same lies over many different platforms
but no it's one person repeating the same thing on two threads on boards who deserves a dig!

There will be no bail out, it's not needed, all Cowen will do is confirm this @5.

If the general public had not got so greedy over the years buying two or three house / apartments then alot of this crisis could have been avoided.

Irish people are no more greedy than any other country in the world ,banks in other countries are regulated though.

    That makes no sense.

So if our greed is equal, what difference would regulation make?

Bank regulation has been a joke EU-wide, and also here.

My question is to do with greed; if we're no greedier than anyone else, what difference would stronger regulation make?

Ah it's hard to blame them, (i don't even have 1 house)....It's never happened in our nations history before that the general public had to watch over the government and the banks...Hopefully the general public has learned a lesson...

    Watching it live.

    Main message seems to be
"We are not looking for bailout"
    "Continue to attract investment"
"Motion tomorrow to extend bank guarantee"

Nothing new at all and its now over at 17:10.

I'm sorry ,my grief is with government and banks for this mess. It's in peoples nature to take advantage of services made available to them. When things change as they naturally will ,these problems won't happen again.

Some people I know are still not fully aware of whats going on at the moment ,thats because of current policies and regulations. If the IMF were to come into Ireland ,there'd be thousands of people in A&E within weeks ,having heart attacks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,375 ✭✭✭kmick

Enda Kenny just needed one short sharp statement. He is waffling on and on saying nothing.

Pretty good speech from enda kenny.

    makes nice change. :)

Eamonn Gilmore asking why did the Taoiseach bother giving a statement about nothing.

Then why would you say we are not greedier? Of course we have shown ourselves to be; that this would even be questioned is totally incomprehensible at this stage.

Do you think you are exaggerating slightly here?

All those that bought into the myth of Bertie Ahern should feel rightly proud now. Bertie, Biffo and Mccreevy have brought this once great nation to the edge of ruination. No longer am I proud to be Irish

As I see it ,the banks and government played on the psyche of irish people ,it was a vicious circle of low income tax/taxes and big mortgages.

Do you think you are exaggerating slightly here?

Yes ,but more people are already showing signs of stress related illnesses. The health service won't know whats hit it.

Arthur Morgan brings a smile to my face at least.

Pretty stale speeches by the other three.

Gotta hand it to Arthur Morgan........ye are either hopelessly incompetent or ye're deliberately misleading us.

Gilmore and Kenny were on-the-ball too, but at least Morgan had the directness to call them on their "lies", even if he did get a rap on the knuckles from the Ceann Comhairle for using an "offensive phrase".

Mind you, when Morgan commented on the con-men still being in charge of the banks, encouraged by FF, they cut to the two brain-dead idiots that are supposedly leading this country and you could lip-read Cowen mouthing "what's he on about" and Coughlan saying "I don't know".........maybe they are seriously deluded after all.

I will always be proud of being Irish but I am ashamed that those you have listed above and those who supported them also call themselves Irish.

The speech told us nothing new and it appears to be part of the endgame between the EU and the Government. At this stage it is only a matter of when we call in the bailout not if. FF know that when that day comes they will be known as the Party that diluted or even threw away our sovereignty.

yes, standard but competent from Gilmore, not bad from Kenny, but not electric considering the situation.

sign of a healthy democracy that smaller parties can get a say. long may it last.

OK, I'm confused. Watching six 1 and all the finance ministers, including our own. What are they not saying? Is there gonna be a bail out or not?

such a load of cock! and the flippin cheek of Coughlan laughing away beside boffo!! who does she think she is?? I'd wipe that feicin smile of her face if I met her!! I am speechless that we still have no major decisions from Government! I will join many others and commend the Sinn Fein guy giving it straight!

    Christ I'm annoyed!!

Biffo and Lenihan playing hardball with the EU. We all know who will lose, but hell it looks good for the FF faithful with them the 2 clowns putting up a fight.
Rehn knows and he is not happy about the banks that is clear. I suspect things are a lot worse with the banks than Biffo or Lenny will divulge.

Morgan has nothing to lose now and fair play to him for saying what he said. Hate his party's past but we need more fire in the belly from the opposition.

The gloves have got to come off now and for the good of the future of this country we need to expunge Fianna Fail from the Irish body politic forever.

Else, we'll be back here in 25 years time as they bankrupt the country again.
