Perhaps? No, it's definitely a big announcement imo.

He will begin with the imortal words, of his once great master CJ Haughey, "Ireland as a country, has been living way beyond it's means":D

"We have turned (another) corner" ?

I hope he doesn't say that "it's 5pm", because then I'll be really confused, given that I don't believe a word the guy says.

I'd say its to announce we are getting a "bail-out". :( (Hope I'm wrong.)

Im sure he will say that everything is ok.

Which means we can put our heads between our legs and kiss our asses goodbye.

how many corners have we turned at this stage?

Possibly moving forward of the budget date??

Probably just another turned corner, don't worry statements. The best thing he could do is shut up and then the markets might actually calm down a bit

Maybe he will announce his resignation as " I and my party aided and abetted by the Greens have done enough damage to the nation, I will now be handing over they keys of the country to the EU?

Just got back from work and switched on TV. Was a little shocked!

BBC, CNBC and bloomberg now reporting stuff like "monetary union threatened", "is this the end of the euro", "ireland's resistance putting union at risk" and other such soundbites. It seems like things are escalating. Even though these headlines are sensationalist, as long as people think that, I would think that it is game over today. So I wouldnt be surprised if this is the bailout announcement

Said absolutely nothing that was'nt already known. Only real point he made was that we had not applied for a bailout.

    Bored now.

Only hint was the talk of having to reassure the markets alongside EU partners and so on.

edit - I guess this was really timed to help Lenihan in his meeting tonight. To make it look like we're still strongly resisting so that other eurozone members might be even more desperate during the ecofin meeting.

Is that still being shown live by CNN and others? Kenny's speech is on the strong side...

The problem is not his speech, its that he just doesnt have the passion or ability to convince. .

I dont think Gilemore has any substance, but he can certainly give a better speech then that ! !

I'm still looking for the ventriliquosts arm up Kennys a*se....... or is there string hanging from the ceiling.

Well that's that then, if we are forced to take the bailout then BIFFO can tell us all it was not his fault that he never applied for it.

Enda demonstrating why he should never be allowed to be Taoiseach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

I think the opposition leaders were expecting more from the Taioseach's speech. Really bad news or something.

"I believe this country's best days are ahead of it' was clearly from Gilmore's prepared remarkes in case of news...he's now diverging from them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,693 ✭✭✭Zynks

Gilmore is the first one to talk without a script... not needing an advisor to write his stuff says a lot to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

IN all fairness, Gilemore can certainly speak alot better then Kenny . . if his policies would be more clear and concise, I would certainly feel more comfortable voting for labour. .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

And now Gilmore completes the 3 stooges set, why oh why are all 3 party leader soo utterly devoid of leadership ability.

Oh between the three, Gilmore is my preferred personally. I wasn't getting a dig in, just pointing out it seemed they were all expecting 'the big announcement'.

Saying a lot and but telling us nothing - he'd make a great preacher though.

Enda can only manage to string a maximum of four words together before pausing for a second and mostly pauses within two seconds.

Paul Gogarty has the laptop out - no doubt either twittering or reading this thread - Big "Hi" to Paul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

Looks like FF did another "masterstroke" . . It appears the opposition parties were prepared for "bailout" announcement . .

Political pointscoring is alive and well . .

Cowen didnt need to make that speech in the Dail, as Gilemore was right that it didnt really tell us anything we didnt already know, it was practically a sales pitch that has little credibility. .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

To me this is either biffo not willing to stand up and announce the bailout to the people and is going to wait for the eu finance ministers at 19.00 to deliver the news, or, he's given the two fingers to the eu.

both stink of saving face for ff above all other considerations.

Wow, Gilmore calling for elections to boost market confidence; can't wait for the media reaction here.
