We at GamesDontSuck want to launch Call of Duty Black Ops tournaments and for the opening tournament we are willing to give away a free GBB (Gas Blow Back) M1911 pistol. But of course feedback is everything!

So please add your suggestions of what game types you would most like to play. As well as any other feedback you may have.

    Little bit of background:
After the initial free tournament we are thinking of running bi-weekly tournaments in which it will cost each player €1 (TBC) entry (payable through paypal) in which an Airsoft gun (or equally good prize) would be up for grabs. Obviously any tournaments would be for over 18s and players who are also living in Ireland. Age verfication may be asked in certain cases to the winner.

Feed back is greatly appreciated :)

    cool

    for the pc i presume?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,686 ✭✭✭Kersmash

Use Gamebattles rules. 2v2 or 3v3 i'd say. Objective games.

Also, would it be done locally or online? I'd assume locally. If it was online that'd be badass.

We probably should of stated this in the first message ... this is online xbox live and psn tournaments. Playing from the comfort of your own home. (Still deciding on weather to have pc tournaments too)

Obviously we dont know how many players would pertake in this. So at the moment we are thinking of having it run as a league with a pointing system. A system that would be majority agreed upon. Guy with the most points takes the prise.

For example (this is not confirmed hence why we are asking for feedback):
every 10 players will be randomly picked to do battle with each other in multiple game types.
Say 2 x 5minute rounds of capture the flag and 2 x 5minute rounds of headquarters and 2 x 5minute rounds of "Free for all" to finish. Total time roughly 30 mins and 6 games of enjoyment. To sum it up... More rounds you win more points you get. Guy with most points overall wins.

What would be up for grabs:

Team tac or 6 man teams would be the best way of going about it. I'm sure most of us could get a 6 man team going.

I think someone here can correct me as it's been a while, but in consolegaming.eu.. I only played CFT, Sabotage, Demolition and SnD. Maybe we played TDM as well but it's been a while and thus it's all a bit hazy.

FFA does nothing probably because I'm ****e at it :/ for me interest wise as I never play FFA. Think I played FFA under half a dozen times in MW2 under a few accounts in total! :pac:

On another note, is this boardsies only?

I'd definitely be up for this on XBL. Bit of TDM and FFA to mix it up. Or how about Wager Matches? Wagers Matches are so fast and frantic and fun that it would make it awesome. Put up your CoD points while you play for the airsoft gun prize (If that is the case obviously) :D

Betting money while you're betting money! I can see an Xzibit meme here somewhere....

If you are going to be running tournaments at that rate , it would have to be ffa , the organisation of a team tourney (depending on how many teams entered) would put a lot of pressure on , and more than likely have to run in a certain time frame.
After your initial tourney , maybe consider a league style , running over 3 months maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,732 ✭✭✭Magill

Sounds like a great idea, im sure (as long as its not run on monday/wednesday nights) i could convince a good few people from my clan to play in the first one(PS3), obviously playing in teams would be more ideal but you cant really split one prize but i guess you could give it to however got the most points on ze team ?

But yeah, i'd be up for it.

Thanks for the input guys :)

(to answer some of the questions above :) )
    • This tournament is not just for boards.ie players. But since boards.ie is the most popular Irish forum we naturally will start here :)
    • Having a 3 month league would be too much we feel. We are looking to run €1 (tbc) entry tournaments bi weekly. We feel that with such a low cost it could be something held over 1-3 days around the weekend - "you enter and win or loose" kinda style :) (and at such a low cost its for fun too :) ) We also feel that it could put people off by having a long tournament.
    • To futher go into what I said above we are thinking time-slots. A player can choose upon entry when he or she wants to enter. Eg; Friday 7pm, Friday 11pm, Friday (early sat morning) 1am, 2am etc etc.... [same for saturday etc] (times are only an example)
    • If a player can not make a requested game or gets disconnected we will always allow what can be described as a "spare-slot block" - of course we have rules on this which we will state later.
    • We are also going to run team tournaments. Prizes that every member will get.

We are gong to run a test-tournament this weekend. Just to get the feel of things. Like most new things, got to get the bearings first :)
If it is ok with the mods I will post a new thread on Thursday annoucing tournament details.

Just out of curiousity, what days/times would the average player like to play such a tournament?
    (And again thanks guys)

I would also be interested in this. During the week is when i do be most active so that'd suit me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

I'd be interested, but wait for the lag issues to be patched on PS3, or it'll be a tournament of seeing who can make it back into the party without their console freezing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,686 ✭✭✭Kersmash

In the late evening definitely. Less lag, generally, and more people are home from work, college etc.

Oh also, a neutral host would be handy, so no one gets host advantage i.e get someone with a good connection to host the private match, invite the contestants and then spectate the game. They could also make sure no cheating is taking place. Kinda like a referee.

Just a bit of feedback, Prizes , besides people into airsoft or wanting to get into it, are you only going for a certain type of person ?

2 x hq 2 ctf then a ffa ? that doesnt work for me at all, i know your just throwing it out there , but have it either one or the other, as in ffa or team based.

You must be thinking of small number to be able to run it over a weekend, what happens when you build your rep and start bringing in a big crowd, i only ask this as i have been involved in tourney's and leagues for the last 10 years, the last tourney i was involved with we had 2,000 entry's and had to get it finished by the weekend, basically it was friday night , all day saturday and all day sunday.

    Theatre mode ;)

edit : Why should i pay 1 euro (i know its only 1 euro) to join your tourneys when there are many sites out there to which there is no entry charge ?

    Prizes, i presume.

Most other sites have prizes , be it games , headsets etc , something gamers are interested in as they will use them.

I'm not trying to put a downer on this i'm just looking for answers, to see if its worth my while or not, i have far more friends not on forums that play the xbox/ps3 , so if i'm to promote this tourney to them i need to be able to answer their questions.

Of course we are looking for a certain type of person ... A gamer! :pac:
But to be serious we feel prizes of tournaments should relate to the game in question. For this example COD:BO is a first person shooter. Its about guns :) ... we thought that by giving away something original as a pistol as a prize it would be different. Thats not to say we wont have tournaments giving away COD:BO shirts, neck microphones etc. (Note, the cheaper the prize the cheaper the entry. Which is just simple logic :) )

That was only an example as you mentioned. We were hoping users would majority agree on type of games :P (eg, users replying saying "no have X, X X" thus getting our answer on what to run ;) )

If 1000 players wanted to pertake in the tournament we would obviously restructure around that. But in fairness, are we likely to get 1000 players in our first few games? ... or try to build up to that ;) Its all about structuring to what you get. Hence the tread. We're sending out feelers ;)

Well we cant explain that with just 1 thing, so heres 3 things :) .... :

    1st,
GamesDontSuck is launching a website next year. A concept thats been in development for the last year and a half. However we look to launch a tournament sister-website within the next few weeks in regards to this. These tournaments are not run for financial gain. They are to gain a userbase but while giving to the player and not making profit.

[ And for the record GamesDontSuck comprises of 5 guys. We are just gamers with an idea. We are all boardsies :) We just want to create something. ]

    2nd,
Certain sites that offer free tournaments make money through advertisments on their sites. If GamesDontSuck could immediately run free tournaments with awesome prizes we would. Our way to compete at the start is to offer prizes that other sites would never give away. And for 1 euro? how can people go wrong. You get on a bus its 1.15c sure ;)

    3rd,
By having such a lower entry free its a chance to win something cool and be fun. We want to give away something the other sites dont. Be creative be original ... which ....

begs the question. If an airsoft pistol isnt too peoples liking? what prize do you guys think would be different/awesome/worth the 1euro?

(ps keep the questions/feedback coming guys :) )

Are the tournaments only going to be open to over 18s? I ask because you'll likely get some flack for giving an airsoft pistol to an under 18.
Also, how would you go about picking a single winner if you are running team based match types? I don't think you could judge it on a single game, even on TDM, as what happens if the teams (I'm assuming randomly assigned) are very lobsided and 1 team hammers the other. A guy with 15 kills on the winning team will have gotten them easier than a guy with 15 kills on the losing team.
One last thing, if you are going to have a referee in each game, that is going to seriously limit the amount of games you can have going on at any one time.
Also, how long do you see each tournament lasting, if you wanted to do it over a weekend, you'll likely end up losing people, not everyone can be on 2-3 days in a row, especially if you are going to have to match up with other people who have got to the next round.
If you had a lot of entrants, you could probably go without them, and do a replay if arbitration was requested, I would think that most people who join these sort of things (especially if over 18) would be mature enough not to complain without reason.

Well in Ireland im told the rating isnt actually made follow but more advice. Anyway you might have seen my father around here, his name is Tallon.

Seriously though if you think under 18s should be left out because of airsoft being for people over 18 then if by chance I win ill donate it to somebody 18 who can collect it themselves...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭hypermuse

well I'd imagine they would have to cover their own arse with this..

If they were found to be encouraging under 18s to play an over 18s game then there could be issues.. I couldnt give a ****e either way..

To make it more interesting you should probably award a cash prize.. more people would be interested and with more €1's being put in the pot the prize money could be quite impressive!! then even a fiver for 2nd place or something!

I'd love to win that airsoft gun. Looks like it would do the job if you were trying to rob the local post office!

Ya, fook off ye under 18 b*stards!

I would be available nights during the week like 10pm to midnight. I work night shifts during the week ever second week so would have to know a week in advance of dates but sounds good anyway. I get the whole euro thing and when ye have the website up and running, ye will be getting advertising that will cover toruneys like this.

Best of luck with it lads!

OH, those little ****ers, i mute them in the pregame lobby ! Unless they think they're awesome and on the other team. In that case i will put on my try hard face and rape them like jacko ! Love listening too the abuse after the game.

The worst is the blaring jungle music (why do people think its cool to put there mic's next to the stereo and just play music?) Cod is fairly bad for chatting unless your with friends, If it's strangers the whole lobby gets muted. Although, last night some Irish guy kept shouting "HELLLLLOOOO.....CAN ANYONE HERE MEEEEEE" was quite funny

It'll be a shallow victory for whoever wins it on Xbox because the best boards player on Xbox is actually under 18 :(

Thanks for the reply guys :)

We would like to ask players to send an email off to gamesdontsuck@hotmail.com stating what console you play COD:BO on and your psn/xbox live username.

Its just to get a sense of how many players we can get at first. Then judging from how many we will schedule a tournament structure around that.

(currently no pc tournaments are planned)

    Thanks :)

Gotta say, Sprrattt is an exception in my case of COD players under the age of 18. Key word, exception.

I say I could count the amount of mature and sound players under 18 on two hands since COD2.
