We need a tricolour for 21st century Ireland

Is now the time to update the Irish tricolour?

When the flag was first conceived, it was designed to represent the two major communities living on the island - Green for the Irish Gaels, orange for the descendants of the British settlers and white for unity.

But that was 200 years ago and it needs updating for the 21st century.

Why not a more inclusive flag? One that truly represents the communities of modern Ireland.

How about green on the left (for the Irish Gaels), white (on top) and red (on the bottom) in the middle (for the Polish community) and orange (for the British community)?

There are more important things to worry about than the flag at the moment tbh.

The flag as it is, is fine.

    No, don't be stupid.

Thats ridiculous, what other modern day country changed their flag to accomadate imigrants? If they did the irish flag would play a part in australia, america, UK, canada, ect ect....

The Irish migrants are represented on the Australian, UK and New Zealand flag!!

St. Patrick's cross is on the Union Jack.

Let's go with the times and put Polish on the Irish flag

So the English invade Ireland, yet we're the immigrants? Hmm...

sure, we have quite a few Chinese living here too. Lets stick a yellow star on the flag. How about the Indians, I'm sure we can stick in that wheel thing they have in their flag somewhere. Oh, wait, our flag has now lost any sense of identity. Lets start again, Green, White, Orange. Happy out.

On a realistic note, you're not serious are you?

Totally agree with the poster, 100% we need a new flag to represent the new Ireland.

    Green for Irish
    Red for Poles
    white for Peace
    Orange for Orange tradition.

    This represents the current state.

As I Corkman I'd half support this proposal: ie just have a Red and White flag as our national flag. :)

How about having the IMF logo along with the picture of a Bulgarian apartment below it?

The Chinese and Italians were long here before the Poles. I suppose we should include their flags too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,570 ✭✭✭quad_red

Couldn't we just have an Xfactor style thing every year and vote on what flag/anthem we wanted?

I'm sure that wan from Tesco could do a good job knocking something together.

Feckit, why not change the name of the country? To something cool and relevant.

We could sell the naming rights! That would earn us some well needed cash!

I know a bloke from Cyprus living in Connemara.
So before we run out of space, can we make room for that map of Cyprus on our flag too please? ;)

How about 3 horizontal stripes (orange, green, white) on blue (eu color) background with a box in tope left with 26 harps on it (expandable to 32 :D)

    :P

Sure it would be easier all round if Poland were to just change its flag to Irish, since half the population is over here working anyway. While we're about it, we could just annex Poland and introduce compulsory Irish in all their schools.

    :D

An English flag, with a red hand and a crown. :D

    This is Ireland.

It is not Poland. It is not Nigeria. It is not China.

    The Tricolour is Ireland's flag.

As for your "inclusivity" - Up The Republic!

Personally, I think it would be good idea to reintroduce St Patrick's cross.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,239 ✭✭✭✭KeithAFC

The flag would only represent the republic because it would not represent Northern Ireland.

There should be some brown in there to represent the shít the country is knee deep in at the moment.

It'd get confusing at Mayo versus Armagh games.

im fine with the current flag it has a bit of history its recognizable

id also be fine with changing it as a way of kind of moving on from our troubled past but only if the change didnt include any ridicolous notions like including elements of other nationalities flags just because they live here

this is ireland if they live here but dont have citizenship they are not irish and have nothing to do with our flag.

the flag should represent ireland and what it means to be irish not the makeup of the population of immigrants at any given time

Then it should just be Green with a big harp because Ulster Scots are immigrants too.

Been watching Braveheart, have we? :) Still though, Green with a big harp would probably be acceptable though the happy clappies would probably want a pile of other colours and symbols.

Braveheart? Whats that got to do with Ulster Scots? The people who came from the lowlands of Scotland to settle in Ulster during the plantations.

Can we not take the 80bm bailout money, secede from the EU, then introduce this as the new flag.

Have you taught this out? How will an admendment to the flag make everyone feel inclusive. Those of the Protestant religion (not all protestants are British) hardly felt included during the power of Church & State

How about dealing with a flag that actually is concerned for its OWN CITIZENS! Polish are not Irish Citizens. Why stop at them? There are many other nationalities. How links do we have with either, bar a mere 10 years. Haven't we more historical link with the French and Spanish ? Include them?

If a substantial amount leave, I suppose we would have to change it again? I don't recall the yanks being too concerned about that in their flag, or Aussies

The current flag is good enough as it is.

If that's all that you are worried about, then you live a charmed life

I would go so far as to say, we most certaintly don't need a flag. It has been the cause of alot of ills.

If we're going for a flag that does'nt offend anyone lets just get a big white flag with "I SHOT JR" on it. That does'nt offend anyone.

Or maybe we can stick with our current flag and we can stop people asking for a new flag or anthem that does'nt offend everyone. I don't see any other countries changing flags or anthems so neither should we.

It is the Union Jack, the old symbol of the British empire, which is incorporated in the NZ and Oz flags, it has nothing whatsoever to do with Irish migrants.

Or maybe just a big white flag with "We shot ourselves in the foot!" on it ...

The flags of the four provinces would fulfil all that modern pc inclusive stuff surprisingly well. Dr Vincent Morley's historical overview of them is here and here.

well i like the flag the way it is...

But if you do want to include red, You could leave it green, white and orange, with a red SOLD across it. then we would have all the colors you want.:p
