Forever 21, what do you think?

Was in there today. Was jammed, obviously.
I did buy a couple of things but I hate the layout of the store.
There doesn't seem to be much organisation as to what clothes are where- just random different styles everywhere.
At least in Penneys, the work clothes are all together, the "going out" clothes are all together, the plain basics are all together. Didn't like the layout of F21 at all.

I worked there (just quit) I like the clothes but like you I prefer the layout in Penneys and similar large stores. F21 wanted us to have everything in sections based on their "theme". Eg. Pretty pink frilly dresses and pastel pussybow blouses in one section, leopard print and leather in another, etc.

I haven't been to the one here but I've been to a few in America. I always found it hard to find things in my size, sometimes all tiny sizes, the next thing I liked would only come in big sizes. Very hard to find something I liked and actually be able to try it on.

planning on visiting the shop next week.
How is the price range? is it comparable to pennys? o.o

Nope, higher. Prices are at least 25% higher than in the states, some even more. I would say prices are similar to New Look or H&M

Was there today - it was a bit mental  Ended up buying a little grey vest top for 17 and a green dress for 20. Not quite penneys cheap... but still pretty good. OK quality too - better than penneys.

I liked that they had plenty of stock in every size (unlike new look which has nothing decent left in an 8/10/12 or a 5/6 shoe!!!). Sizes were realistic, i'm a 10 and the small fitted me grand! Also liked that their sterling-euro conversions seemed sane enough, makes a nice change.

Didn't like that a lot of items were in multiple locations, was getting deja vu! Seems like they haven't enough different styles to fill their massive store.

I only got there in the afternoon and the place was a complete mess so will go back on a weekday morning when it'll be tidy and quieter before I make my final judgment on the place!

I liked the accessories ... but that's possibly because it was the only part of the store I was actually able to look around ... The rest was literally a case of taking your life in your hands, it was that busy!

They have loads of cocktail rings with a vintage-y feel for about a fiver. And loads of styles of scarves, belts etc I haven't seen in other shops.

Also, they have lots of socks and tights similar to ones you'd see in Topshop and River Island for half the price.

It's not Penney's cheap, but for what you get, it does seem like pretty good value.

It was insane in there yesterday afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭Smur

Did anyone else notice that the ground floor was absolutely freezing? I started looking around on the top floor and had to take my coat off because it was too warm. As soon as I got to the ground floor I had to put on my coat AND gloves because it was so cold. I think it was because the door out to Mary St. was left open but it meant that it was practically impossible to look around downstairs (especially towards the back) because it was baltic.

While it was packed, I didn't mind it too much cos it was the first day of opening! I've been to lots of them in America and always found nice things at great prices. When you compare it to River Island or Topshop the clothes are a freaking steal! Got soooo many accessories - got a bit shop happy at that part! :)

I have to agree on the layout though. I saw some things twice in totally different locations and if you were looking for a particular type of clothing it might be a bit hard!

Other than that, can't wait to go again! See you later wages!!! :D

One word of advice- when you're going to pay, go to the tills on the middle floor. The queues on the ground floor were insane!

D e e- why did you quit so soon? (If you don't mind me asking).

That's the thing. If I was to go to Forever 21 looking for a jumper for work, I would have to traipse all over the entire shop because the jumpers will be all over the place according to what "style" they are. Whereas in Penneys, I know they'll be in the work-clothes section. Not mixed in with loads of random clothes just because they happen to be a similar colour.

Well let's just say the stock in the store isn't the only thing badly organised! I was lied to from the beginning by my bosses about my contract, my schedule was "finalized" 3 different times but they never got back to me when I said I couldn't do the hours after the first "final" scheduele was emailed to me(I was told to be available 9-9, fine - then they put me in at 6am and I have no say) I had no contact number for anyone so I emailed 3 different managers a total of 7 times and no reply from anyone, and there were a few other factors too. I know I'm not the only person who quit or was upset at the lack of professionalism. For 10% staff discount and 10.50 an hour I'd rather save my sanity.
(Plus they were starting to do my head in with the "let's be the best, team forever 21, let's best the uk's opening day sales! Remember to use the Americanized words even though we're in Ireland!" talk, we're all one company )

I'd love to know what WERE the opening day sales. Spent an hour and a half there yesterday morning, 40 minutes this morning (for exchanges before the sizes went..a refund, but did buy more..). I don't think the store was really prepared for that, lots of frantic staff on walkie talkies everywhere...the tills were insane (today as well) and American staff seemed to be telling them to go faster which isn't really possible when people are buying the whole store. The layout is a bit weird, particularly ground floor. 1st and 2nd floors seemed to be a bit more organised- jeans, heritage, twelvebytwelve, basics, pastel stuff etc. The shoe section is too closed in and was still fairly inaccessible today...jewellery has the same problem and is blocked by fitting room queues. Won't be a problem come Januray I suppose. I don't really understand why people are complaining about higher prices than the US- it would have to be, much higher rent, costs, wages, everything here. 10.50! That's really high, they'd be on half that in the US or less even. The fitting room situation is a bit too poncey, they could control clothes coming out and the queues better if they weren't wasting staff time leading customers to fitting rooms- you wouldn't see that in Penneys which has similar queues. Overall, I was amazed with how cheap stuff was, didn't see anything over €40. Cheaper than H&M and SOOOOO much nicer. Dresses are a bit crap though. Have spent €222 there overall, got an insane amount of stuff for that. Definitely my new favourite shop.

    i was there today,

tbh stay away if you're a guy. think of the shop as the whole of the back of your hand, then look at your pinky fingernail, that's the size of the guys section.

it's rediculous. F21 was a great place to shop when i lived in chicago, nice plains/checks for next to nothing money and had a decent mens section. the one in jervis is down right taking the piss.

if you're a girl you'll love it though. 3 floors of nothing but clothes.

Agree. Had a quick browse around the store on Saturday. After finally finding the guy's section I was amazed at how tiny it was. I know guy's sections are usually smaller but this section was only about 5% of the total floor space. Ridiculous. Having said that, wasn't a huge fan of the clothes personally. At the grand old age of 28 I felt like the clothes were a bit young looking...

@Corruptedmorals nobody complained about the prices being higher. Someone asked the prices and I told them that it's more expensive than Penneys (true) 25%+ higher than the US prices (also true).

10.50 is a decent wage for Ireland, of course they earn less in the USA but things are generally cheaper there anyway so of course the min wage reflects that (though it differs state to state) I was simply saying that 10.50 an hour wasn't enough to keep me working there, that and being around nice clothes is the only good points. I know I'm not the only person who was/is unhappy there even though it's only a new store.

I'll still shop there, Forever 21 has been my favorite shop in the states for years but I'll give working for them a miss.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 856 ✭✭✭D e e

I have a feeling that if the mens clothes sell well they will expand the section. A lot of the clothes in the mens section are not being sold in the American stores so they were made especially for the "European male" if they do well and there is demand I think they will stock more.

Not here, I keep hearing it/seeing it everywhere else. Personally couldn't get over how cheap everything was so found that surprising. I understand what it's like working for a crap retail company!:) Worked in an Irish retail company famed for that for years. 10.50 obviously isn't enormous or anything...but is IS significantly above the starting rate for almost all, if not all, other shops, so in that respect it's great. I'm surprised it's that high actually. Anyway, I'm throughly impressed with the place!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,160 ✭✭✭✭banshee_bones

Yeah the mens section is so so so small comapred to the amount of floor space given over to womens, but as other posters have said im sure there is scope for expansion.
I like alot of the heritage/top floor section myself havent had a chance to try anything on yet or buy, theres just no way I would with the overall craziness in the store! Might try later on in the week when things -might- have died down a little! :pac:

10.50 an hour is amazing for a starting off wage in retail in Ireland. I worked in River Island for three years and the pay was minimum wage. I know that in New York minimum wage is $7.45, so I don't think that's too bad really. Anyway, sorry to hear about your bad working experience :( I know what that's like.

OT, going to have a look around F21 myself now, hopefully it won't be too busy /crosses fingers

Was there yesterday and couldn't believe how big it was . Thought I was going to faint with the heat at one stage and the staff all seemed pretty stressed out but it's definitely good value so looking forward to going again when things are a bit calmer. Much much better than New Look and so much cheaper for nicer clothes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭Eviledna

I was in there yesterday. I thought it sucked ass. I'm a size 14-16, and all the sizes are s/m/l, no xl. So I went up to a male member of staff (only one I could find) and asked what are the sizes. He said s/m/l. I said, no, what are the IRISH size equivalents? He said there aren't any. Only s/m/l. Then swanned off smirking. Which was nice.

So about 20 mins later I found a female staff member on another level and asked her the same question. She said that the L is a size 14, and there is no XL.

So basically if you are a size 16 in anything don't go in, they don't account for you.

Not loving that. Or their stock to be honest. I'm in my mid twenties and felt the stuff was worse quality than pennys for higher prices. Totally aimed at teens, so it seems there's a hint in the name "forever 21"

    Ah well.

went there today, and i have to say, it wasn't great. nothing caught my eye, everything is all over the place, my friend was buying a jumper and we were in the queue for about 15 mins because there was only one person at the til, but 4 other staff members were just standing around her, doing nothing apparently. I'm not a big fan of the clothes, i prefer pennys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 293 ✭✭Shmatter

I only had a quick snoop but I thought it looked grand, I was checking out coats and nothing i could find was over 50e (I'm sure there IS, I just didn't see it), which is almost Penneys prices! I guess i read this thread before I went so I expected a LOT worse.
Henry street is great now for shopping, very exciting!!!!

That sucks that a 14 is their largest size, way to give ladies a complex! I find the same with mango, their xl seems to be a 14 too!

Have to say the plus size clothes look lovely, curvy girls should have the same cute clothes as the skinny girlies!

I'm in the process of losing a good bit of weight and when I was heavier there was feck all choice, New Look in fairness have always been the most decent for bigger sizes

The "plus size" (which is basically a 14 to 16 +) contains about 3 dresses and loads of straight leg jeans  Won't be pushed going back there in a hurry... I'll stick with the New Look beside it!

Damn it... ugh, if my career doesn't turn out the way I want it to, I think I'll launch my own plus size label, modelled by real plus sized models (I'm looking at you ASOS and your non-plus size models for a range that starts at a 20) and decently priced (looking at Evans and their ridiculous prices). I've ranged from a 14 to a 20 for most of my life so far (currently 16-18) and the plus size fashion scene makes me sad sometimes.

Will check it out for the sake of it on Wednesday, if all else fails, I might chance ordering online, must check if you can return in store.

    Hey girls
For those of you saying that the staff didn't know the UK equivalent for s/m/l it's not their fault in fairness. I worked for Forever 21 but quit a few days ago. In our "training" we were only told that the clothes come in size s,m,l and that they don't have uk/irish sizing. Then someone asked for a rough guide and the managers weren't even 100% sure. We weren't given ANY info about the plus sizes sizing, I knew it already myself because I have been buying
clothes from the plus sized line online since it launched last year.
So yeah, the staff member probably didn't know because he wasn't actually told!
I think the size large is usually 12-14 but some things can be worn if youre bigger. Eg. I'm a size 16-18 and have a few cardigans, tank tops, etc that are a size large and fit fine but I wouldn't fit my right leg into the size large skirts which are more like a size 12 IMO.

As for the store having a small plus sized section, I agree that it's ridiculous. In NYC the store has a GREAT plus sized section that you would want to spend hours in. Dublin is supposedly the European flagship so I don't understand why they haven't ordered in more stock.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 856 ✭✭✭D e e

Also ordering off the website from the states isn't too bad. You generally pay 1/3 of the total to customs which brings the prices to about the same as what you pay in the Dublin store. Then you just pay $35 flat rate shipping regardless of how much you order, maybe get a few friends together and place an order if you only want a few bits!

I'm your size, and although I was curious about seeing the shop (heard loads about it), I was also worried about sizes. Did you try anything? Maybe the L is a generous (big) 14? Having said that, I only know "skinny" girls who have shopped there in the States. It's prob not worth it so for me to be making the journey into the town to check it out

I find other shops do that too though. For some reason the H&M in Liffey Valley never seems to stock a size larger than 12.

Besides, size 14-16 is not huge!!! It's a bit of an insult really. All it means is that you don't have a boyish figure but actually sporting some feminine curves! I find Oasis are generous with their sizes, and they do cute stuff too....just not that cheap (unless it's the sale). I've never had a problem in Penny's though, so I'm surprised. They obviously aim for a different type of girl...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭ams

I did a gigantic shop in the states recently and would be a 12-14 on top and a 14 on bottom and the tops I bought were a mix of M and L and the one skirt I bought was a M. I think you really have to try stuff on unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

"plus size" usually means size 18+, Forever21 sizes stop at a 20 (a small fitting one too imo). The fact that they call that "plus size" is insulting to pretty much all women tbh

Seems like I'll be sticking with New Look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

I wont be going near the shop either if thats what their sizes are like. Im generally around a 16 in most things. Theres nothing more soul destroying trying on clothes were a 16 is really a 12-14 at a push. It amazes me to be honest as American brands should be used to catering for plus sizes especially in a shop that size they could cater for practically everyone if they wanted to.:(

I've only shopped in the Asian stores, and I don't think they had plus size but as far as I recall everything except one top I got is a medium, the top is a small. The main problem I had was with my chest - even when I was on the wrong side of size 8 I've always had feminine curves (boobs, bum and hips). However the design of a lot of the clothes isn't for curves, maybe in part because they are so huge in asian markets (average bra cup is an A), maybe in part because the target demographic is teenagers who won't have filled out fully in the hips yet... I found the sizing somewhere between Zara TRF and Zara Basic.

The only way I found to work the shop was to go in at least once if not twice a week and trawl the 4 floors top to bottom. Painful when stock had been moved around. And I'd try on 20 things and buy one or two.

Pretty much. I've lost a good bit of weight recently and I've been proud of myself for not needing to go into the plus size sections any more in shops (my wardrobe and wallet are now hating me for it, but anywho... :D) but I was pretty gutted yesterday when I couldn't find a single thing bigger than what appeared to be a size 12 in the "normal" section. The stuff isn't cheap or special enough for me to be arsed going back in till maybe the fuss calms down a bit and the stock gets a bit more normal.

It's funny that neither of the TWO staff members told me that!! And there was about 1500 people in there on the 4 floors so it wasn't exactly obvious.

I understand that it wasn't their fault, but the first dude's attitude sucked. He was rude and abnoxious, trying to make out that it was a silly question.
I figured he was having a bad day and tried another girl, who was much nicer and run off her feet. But at the end of the day the sales reps are representing the company, and I got a very, very bad impression of the place from them. I went to forver 21 in the states and got some lovely stuff in the past, but it must have been from their "plus size" section.
I mean come on, since when is a 14-16 beyond normal?

I half-tried something on, queue for the changing rooms was far too long, so in that I threw the "L" dress over my head and it didn't even attempt to fit over my 36DDs.

Exactly, it really isn't, I'm a curvy gal, I've got boobs and a bum, and I was willing to spend what little cash I have on something nice, but I reckon they will only be targetting a sub-section of our society which means less profit for them. Doesn't make sense and yes, it is insulting. But lots of shops are that way. Think they are trying to give me a hint, lol.

    +1.

The S/M/L tend to variate a lot in size, depending on what the item is.

I got one top in a M and it's really generous sizing and another dress in L that's reeeally small fitting, couldn't be more than a 10-12.

I'd recommend trying everything on before you buy, in various sizes. Probably a lot more effort, but if you want clothes that fit, it's pretty much neccessary.
Alternatively, guess, try the stuff on at home then exchange it for a different size if you're not happy ... which is also effort :pac:

Which ain't so good for those of us who don't live in Dublin and travelled up to see it. No returns easily there. What is the point of having sizes if they aren't supposed to infer what flippin size the product is??

There really needs to be a standardization of sizes in fashion. No other industry could get away with this crap. And I'm sure there is less of a market willing to try on every single item, which means more returns and more waste.

I bet the sales will be good for those who fit inside their acceptable sizing brackets!

To all of the ladies that are a size 6-12, did you find the stuff good in there?

I understand your point but again I do have to defend this (not his attitude) At our training we were shown these huge boards made up of images of each collection. They had one for EVERY part of the store (mens, kids, womens, accessories) everything EXCEPT the plus sized section. There was no mention of that at all to anyone in my group of 50+. I only knew we would be stocking it because I had read about it online. So unless you are working on the floor where the plus sized section is you wouldn't know about it. Sad but true (and not very good for their business either)

And I agree that it makes the company look bad, everyone should be told where things are so they can help customers find the products they want. As for the staff members being rude, sorry to hear that. I met lots of lovely people there but there will always be a few bad apples, especially when management never checked references.

I agree the sizing is stupid, a size 12 is not plus sized. But you guys have to remember that F21 started as a tiny store mostly catering to Korean women in LA, who are for the most part built very small and it seems that they have stuck to that sizing. The plus sized line is still relativly new, it was only introduced in may of last year and it was complete garbage at first but now it's really improving. I love the plus sized clothes but the real thing that bothers me is why have a line dedicated to plus size women? Why can't curvy girls wear the same clothes as everyone else?

Another thing to keep in mind is that the sizing is actually US juniors sizing NOT womens sizing which is why everything is small.

We were told at training that there won't be any major sales, just markdowns throughout the year. The stock changes so often (deliveries 6 days a week) that there is no need for sales.

Jeepers I can see why you quit! Talk about hanging the staff out to dry! People will travel to see this store, and they will be dissapointed. The staff will bear the brunt of that and will have to deal with these kinds of questions.
I hope that they are reading this and will help their staff a bit more!

Hang on a second. Juniors? So what age-range is the target market so?
    Teens only?

I totally agree. I feel sorry for all of the staff still there, it was organized very badly. They are really big on customer service but miss out on critical things like explaining the brands properly and where they are located on the floor. All I can say is that if you experience a problem with a staff member (not just them not knowing where things are, but their atiitude or whatever) ask to speak to their manager. A lot of our training was heavily focused on providing good shopping experience to the customer so if someone is slacking it makes the whole store look bad.

As for their target customer, I think it's 16-25 but the sizing is juniors which runs much smaller than US womens sizing. One of the lines in store called "For Love 21" is targetted to women who are 25-late 30s and it "offers a more modest fit". A size large in for love would be more like a 16 rather than 12-14 like the regular line. Even though it's targetted to older women, I'm 20 and liked quite a few of the pieces!

Was in the store yesterday morning, was so busy, a bit overwhelming to be honest, but was pleasantly surprised. I'm usually a size 14-16 on top because I've a large chest, and a 12-14 on bottom normally. Tried on about 20 items in the fitting room and ended coming out with about 7-8 items - a few skirts, a dress, a cardigan, a jumper and another dress/top thing! The staff did seem a bit stressed, and at one stage my friend and I did overhear a bit of drama going on with a few of the managers - one was crying on the floor and the upstairs refusing to work with the other one, but in fairness we were eavesdropping! ;) Loved the accessories - lots of lovely necklaces, tights and scarves. Wasn't a fan of the shoe section - very few sizes (I'm an 8) and the shoe section itself was quite small - everyone was bashing into each other. But apparently most of the shoes are placed around the store. But yeah, overall a good experience, shall definitely be going back come next pay day! :)

I went into Forever 21 yesterday at lunchtime. I was not impressed at all. It was only a quick look but I couldn't find anything I fell in love with until I went to the mens section. I'm gonna go back and buy a nice guys shirt to wear with jeans or something when it gets colder. I love wearing big baggy boys shirts around when I'm at home! :)

I was hoping to see a few nice dresses but nada. Also does anyone know if they do a student discount?!
