agreed - squats and lots of nut butter, home made bars and lots of sleep for recovery

Go to fridge. See that milk? Neck it. Grab the chicken, I don't care if its raw, EAT IT. Then go and squat heavy and deep. Not ATG but ATChina. Then Deadlift it back from China while eating a horse. After that, drink a cuppa tea, you deserve it. CAUSE ITS NOW TIME FOR SOME BENCH PRESSING THAT BAR TO THE MOON.

Repeat on mon wed and fri.

I assume you're doing Starting Strength or some other Strength program, otherwise I'd seem like a lunatic there.

I'm a complete newbie! I have absolutely no idea about gym slang or the names of stuff so basics would be appreciated!!

    Read everything you can about

    this: http://stronglifts.com/

    and that: http://startingstrength.com/

then make your own choice what program to follow and follow it to the tee! no changes what so ever for the first year or too. theres no need to as 5 * 5 works great, its tried and tested so to speak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

Yeah that guy on stronglifts has been lifting for 11 years and has reached elite levels of mass (165lbs).

This guy said he wants bigger arms legs so why are people suggesting strength based routines with zero direct arm work? I'm sure you'll get somewhat bigger arms as a novice coming from an untrained background but surely there's better suggestions than "squat more" as far as aesthetics are concerned.

It seems everytime a untrained individual sticks their head in here, the parrots come out of the woodwork and start shouting about starting strength & milk, totally ignoring the OP's specified goals, as if that's the only legitimate training method for a new lifter.

Edit: (this post comes off kinda snotty, I'm actually trying to be helpful here and get some discussion going)

well your having going to recommend to him beginner bodybuilder routines to a guy who never lifted before. confuse him to death and have him in the gym for well over an hour each time?

My arms grew nearly two inchs in since I started SL (10 months nearly)
    nearly 20kg gain in bodyweight.

It works mate after all its a beginners program and oh would you look at that the other person mentioned his a beginner!!

Anyone who can manage to operate the internet can probably learn how to do a few bicep curls and tricep extensions. It's not rocket science.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I did SS for a fair while, and am now sorting out a vast array of Rippetoe inspired aesthetic imbalances.

Yeah man totes agree with you like. Every hack on this forum always recommends SS, I mean SS is no use to anyone if you want to be a bodybuilder you know what I mean like? I found SS helped me a little at the start with rugby but now I just do my own thing and the results have been impressive.

Right. And you're speaking from what level of experience? You brought compound lifts to their developmental conclusion, looked in the mirror and thought "nah"?

Aesthetic imbalances? I can't begin to point out the issues I have with that term.

I'll rephrase, comparatively speaking my arms and upper body is alot weaker than my legs. It's probably reasonable to say thats because I've always opted for strength based routines that wouldn't feature the same level of direct arm work and so on that a bodybuilding oriented routine would.

My main point is the "squat more" mantra is p*ss poor advice to be giving to someone who wants bigger arms.

You're much more experienced than me so if you tell me what I've just said is wrong, I'll drop the issue.

Squats and deadlifts build bulk when you get heavy enough, Mix them up with Overhead press, clean and jerks and chin/pull ups gives you bigger arms.

Seams that full squats also cause a a release of test or something.
which as a bodybuilder you would know that you need test in order to build mass.

do all the curls the you want you aint every going to build mass from them

EDIT: they dont build bulk they build up strenght when done correctly? eating clean and like a elephant builds the mass with sleep

Lads, just wanna point out, the thread title is "Bigger arms/ legs", not just "bigger arms". I don't know how the thread got so derailed, but the topic of bicep curls must be a more dangerous issue than I thought.
While I would like to hear a bit of clarification from the OP about what he wants, there can be no doubt that getting biggers legs can be done with squats. Therefore, if the squatting doesn't solve the arms issue, at least it gets the other one. So no sense in bickering about it.
And I'd like to think that girls would be more impressed with a 1000lb squat than ridiculously big arms on a thin body, but sure we all know that'll just never happen :D

One day, he'll prob start a row, he'll flex and think his gunz scare the skinny guy,
he'll prob get KTFO cos he has bo back or chest to throw the guns with
and then all his birds laugh and leave

Did it ever occur to you that they only look big because the rest of him is so small.

OP, do starting strength and add in some extra arm work if you want. Not much though, 3sets at the end of each session.

    Arms,eh?

Most modern champs train arms no more than once every five to seven days, but the 11 men on our list who peaked pre-1990 all worked bis and tris twice or even three times per week.

For most of their careers, Vince Taylor and Kevin Levrone also hit guns twice weekly; Ronnie Coleman still does.

With 28 of the 40 arms on our list built with twice- or thrice-weekly workouts, is that the secret to arm-growing success? Their results mostly prove their superior genetics. FLEX recommends five to seven days between workouts for most individuals.

Still, every body is different. Try a greater arm-training frequency. If it works, stick with it, but be prepared to back off at the first signs of overtraining.

    WHY
why - because all of what you are saying is so full of holes and nonsense that its in no way helpful to anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭Transform

the reason why is that when you actually deal with beginners with this goal every single day of your life (thats what i actually do) then there are certain trends or systems that are going to deliver results quicker - doing big compound lifts is one of them.

I agree to throw in some direct arm work but if the person is spending more time doing direct arm work as opposed to working their legs then there is something wrong.

However, if a guy/girl just enjoys working their 'guns', reads everything in arnie's encylopedia of bodybuilding as truth and couldnt give a fig about lower body training then go for it. I just think its pretty boy training.

Overall the vast majority of beginners fail to make significant progress because -

    A) they focus too much of their time on exercises that do not give a big bang for the buck

    B) they dont eat enough and food quality is poor

    C) they are program hoppers i.e. do a program for 2 weeks then see someone else in the gym doing something else and think thats the holy grail. Stick to the flippin' program and get stronger

For the record, anyone saying bigger guns is going to attract more women needs to stop using their arms as a compensation measuring stick for sexual attractiveness - women are going to be more interested in your current or future earning potential (study more, work harder and living independently of your parents can help here), common interests, sense of humour and NOT thinking that just because you pump the guns makes you a great catch.

Ah here now, you can't use Ronnie Coleman etc. as examples of how a complete novice should train. Ronnie had a massive strength base before he turned to bodybuilding, the lad can deadlift and squat over 800 pounds. Not to mention the juice.

Well then lets focus on the common interests and sense of humour more so. Just speaking from experience.

Maybe the girls can pitch in on this rather than the guys?

Girls love guys who are self-obsessed, and would rather go to the gym than spend time with them or the kids. They love guys who constantly talk about what diet they are on, and always make a funny coment about weight gain when they eat carbs. They love men who think they are better than everyone else and think they will live for ever because they have found the perfect balance of diet and exercise, and laugh at anyone who is too stupid not to be living their life exactly like them.
