Worst roundabout in the country

After reading the thread posted about a roundabout in Clane it got me wondering, whats the worst roundabout in the country?

The Pavilions roundabout in Swords gets my vote, a mixture of badly designed lanes, traffic lights galore and mainly idiots who don't know what lane to be in that makes it a joke.

I concur... To avoid using that roundabout, I always go though Swords.

the roundabout in the centre of Midleton is very odd, if you get stuck in the inside lane...

It doesn't get the same usage as the ones mentioned in other posts, but the one at Kickham St/Cathedral St/Mitchell St in Thurles has got to be the most ridiculous roundabout/traffic circle in the country - or rather the motorists who use it. It's got 3 streets coming on to it and does help traffic flow, but the number of times I've been 'overtaken' on it by idiots simply driving across it rather than following me around it (single traffic lane ffs and I always indicate correctly) is crazy. Stupid people. Probably got their licences in the amnesty/still drive on the provisional with no L-plates and think the roundabout is just a bit of spilled paint.

The red cow roundabout is dead

Long live the red cow freeflow.

The walkinstown roundabout works like every other one in the country

All lanes lead to all exits, just pick the shortest line and ignore the chaos caused.

Left lane for going 3/4 way round is always good.

And don't bother using your indicators, or use them too early or too late... the walkinstown roundabout is on my route to and from work and unfortunately what you describe is normal behaviour for many drivers! Definitely the worst roundabout!!

Swords Pavilion is bad, but Walkinstown Roundabout is by far the worst.

Honourable mention has to go to the Dublin Road Roundabout in Kilkenny.
Normal rules didnt apply to this roundabout. It was the left lane to turn left only. You had to go into a feeder lane on the right to take second exit or 3rd/4th. This meant that those who treated it as a normal roundabout, and were taking the 2nd exit, would be cut off by those who were following the road markings and doing what would be wrong at every other roundabout in the country. I've noticed since they removed all the markings to make this roundabout different now, so its back to being a normal roundabout. I think.Who knows?

The Walkinstown Roundabout is fine. It's the muppets who use it incorrectly that cause the chaos. Idiots that cross the 3 lanes between exits.

Not to mention the people who take the 5th exit by driving all the way around in the left hand lane, indicating left all the while...

Definitely Pavilions, its those damn traffic lights, five ways bot the worst to be fair, just fast but that's all gone now with bypass.

Just imaging how the Turbo Roundabout would work here in Ireland.

I agree regarding the Pavilions roundabout. I was on it for the first time about 2 weeks ago and it confusing to say the least. However, the idiots are caused by the other two reasons you gave.

Know the pavilion and it's pretty bad but walkinstown is insane.

The new ballymun junction on the m50 is stupid. Coming out of town you can use both lanes to go straight on or turn right onto the motorway. Madness. An accident waiting to happen.

The Pavillions is a fine roundabout, its only people that cant drive find it so bad.

    This roundabout is much worse

The Irish version is here, http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.41053,-6.225944&spn=0.004969,0.016512&z=17. Travel from Dublin Airport towards the M50. If you want to go LEFT, stay in the MIDDLE lane, if you want to go RIGHT, stay in the LEFT lane and if you want to go STRAIGHT, stay in the RIGHT lane. All makes perfect sense  !

Walkinstown is by far the worst roundabout Ive driven on. The old Red Cow would have come second.

Walkinstown Cross is a pain in the arse.

No its not, it's actually very simple. It's idiots in cars that wreck it.

All bar 1 entrane to the roundabout have 3 lanes. There are 6 roads off it. If everyone used lane 1 for exit 1,2 lane 2 for 3,4 and lane 3 for 5,6 it works grand. Course then people also have to stay in their lane as you go round but instead it's random lane roullette all over the place.

The walkinstown roundabout is actually one of the best roundabouts in the country. It's mean enough to keep away most of the drivers, that don't know how to handle roundabouts. It handles a huge ammount of traffic without lights. Bit of a bastard taking the fifth exit on a bicycle though

I will admit to having to play the 'I've got a funny reg and am on the wrong side of the car, don't hit me please' card on one of them in Utrecht, in the rain so the road markings went invisible (Whatever paint they use there does that). :o

I have taken those in Holland and they are fine. But i was sitting on the right side of the car.:D

That Walkinstown one looks like the one i almost crashed my car 10 minutes after buying it because some muppet went full on the breaks because he or she got confused i guess.

This wrecks my head. I travel from Northside shopping center to Artane roundabout and the road clearly states inside lane to go around and outside lane to go left and straight ahead. Previous weeks I have took outside to go straight ahead and at least 5 times GIMPS have tried to take me on the inside and blast the horn as if am in the worng.... Head boiler!!!!! Now I take up both lanes in the middle.

The Dutch turboroundabouts idea looks a good idea. However I can't see how its possible to do a U turn on them, especially if you approach from a single lane road.

the new roundabout/road layout just off kill lane near monkstown farm is a disaster and a mess there has been many crashes there in the last few weeks! the place is in a mess! its a hugeee area and theyve removed the large roundabout and put in one of these mini roundabout with 6 exits! its really not working! and really annoying me!!!

My vote goes to Walkinstown-you take your life in yur hand on that one. (If you're ever there watch the bus drivers- some just drive staright out and force everyone else to stop!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Well maybe not the worst the Graduate Roundabout in Killiney is fairly bad. People cannot grasp the lanes due to the offset nature of several exits. 3 of the 4 exits have pedestrian lights within 10 metres of them meaning it frequently grinds to a halt due to traffic backing up all the way around it. No yellow boxes to combat the backed up traffic either.

I know of multiple people who've had shunts on it.

i have to agree and alot of people like to use the lane closet the roundabout no matter what exit there taking so alot of people cutting across you ect!

Its easy, you go on the inside lane, then past the second exit indicate left and enter the left lane, then come back all the way around the way you came, indicating right before reaching the exit you first came in on.

    Example:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=floralaan+eindhoven&sll=35.101934,-95.712891&sspn=40.942362,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Floralaan&ll=51.416241,5.497418&spn=0.000964,0.002411&t=k&z=19

Good setup because people can't just change their minds half way through without driving over the 3 inch high barrier between the lanes
