You have to top up by 20 euro (all in one go) every 30 days to receive your next increment of free credit. Also, the phone doesn't look great to be honest. Might suit some people though

Yes - to be fair to all - this is an entry level Android smart phone. Customer reviews on the site are the best way to judge.

With full GPS (Google navigaiton etc) etc etc it really is a good bargain me thinks...

Not a Galaxy S or iPhone but definitely does what it says on the tin...

would agree - 50 euro for a touchscreen android handset with 3G, wifi and gps is outstanding
The fact that its android and has wifi - means that you could use this for lots of tasks other than just as a phone - a cheap internet radio for the house or some other such purpose !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,660 ✭✭✭crawler

Yep - to be fair 7/10 would be more or less my rating too...

€69 is correct for existing customers...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,475 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

wonder would this be any better than the n95 I'm using

slightly bigger screen, more memory, but probably worse controls with the touch screen

I presume the free €120, requires you to top up by €20 per month then you get an additional €10 for 12 months, is this correct?

I'm with Meteor atm, tempted to opt for this offer though - does Vodafone PAYG offer free texts to any networks?

Correct - it's €20 per month and VF give you another €10 FREE for 12 months

Yes, ANY network texts see link below when you top up by €20 per month (you also have a choice of VF only texts AND calls) or if you top up by €30 you also get free internet on you mobile - lots of options.

I might get in trouble for asking this, but how difficult are those phones to unlock? thinking of paying the €50, unlocking it and popping in my Meteor sim.

Illegal, or just not keeping strictly to the spirit of the arrangement?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 kingcrowley

As a general rule I would avoid things with Resistive screens...or at least use it before you buy. They are generally pretty terrible and do not allow for multi-touch as far as I know?

Again, correct, no multi-touch. Agree - Video (earlier post) & hands on if you are not sure. The resistive screen is pretty good in terms of response as the screen is not overly big....again, just my personal opinion :)

Unlocking a phone is never illegal afaik

You just won't have support or warranty

Good price, but i ould see myself getting horribly frustrated with the speed, lag, lack of multitouch etc.

IMO better off saving up a little more and getting the £99 Orange San Francsico...commonly voted as the best budget android around.
    Easy to unlock as well.

Apparently this was the hottest mobile phone deal ever on Hotukdeals!

Don't forget €12.50 cashback via bethrifty too.

Not a bad deal at €49.99 but a bargain at €37.49

Offer seems only to be available to people who are switching networks. If you need a new number/connection or are an existing customer then it comes up at €79.99

Login to bethrifty - then follow the link from their site to Vodafone and purchase the phone as normal from VF (paying the normal price on their site). The 12.50 should then be paid into your bethrifty a/c a couple of days later but they key is that you have to hit VF using the link on bethrifty.ie

Correct - the lower price is for switchers (which is the main market, you keep your exisitng number etc when you switch) - the same applies to the €120 credit.

    Yup, me too!

Shame, I was actually gonna order one at the €49.99, don't think I'll bother now. Twas only an impluse purchase anyways, probably for the best!

Can this be bought from Ireland? Or is it only for UK? Thanks!

Not too sure, whole thread on it to ask questions though! Loads of ways to get it cheaper, inc 12% cashback, student discount etc.

The north or having someone send it over for ya is always an option! Apparently nearly in the same league as the HTC wildfire which retails at nearly €250!

    Hi Guys.

I am the owner of AndroidZA, the South African android website that was referred to in an earlier post.

I reviewed the VF845 myself. My thoughts on it were that it is great as your first entry into Android, especially if you have never owned a smartphone ... however, if you are used to any previous smartphone with a bigger LCD and fairly speedy, then this is probably not the phone for you ... unless you use it as a back up.

I have biggish fingers and I struggled to type on the phone ... but I am also used to a bigger phone and I had a similar issue with the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini.

But at the same time, there are a few guys on the Android forum on my site who have one of these, and love them ... but for most of the cases with these guys, this is their first smartphone.

At the end of the day ... the feelings about this phone are relative.

No where (besides china maybe), will you find a phone priced this low with GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi, Android 2.1, etc, etc ... so well done to Vodaphone on this.

And it's also unfair ... your pricing is a crapload cheaper ... here we pay R1,500 (About 130 pounds), and don't get any airtime or anything free ... but it's a once off payment, not sure how yours works :P

And keep a look out for the LG Optimus One (if it isn't already there) ... over here, it is priced R1000 more than the VF845 ... but is an awesome phone, with a normal size screen.

And as a side note, if you intend getting a VF845 ... don't count on 3D gaming, the phone could barely run Neocore ... but normal gaming is fine.

    Regards

    Itai

Well, I was considering smartphones knock-offs from China I think I'd rather give this a go. At least it's a name brand and you can get support for it here.

    Welcome to boards.ie androidZA

I think your points sum it up perfectly. It's a perfect first venture into smart phones on the android platform.

This phone 'does what it says on the tin' at a very low price.

It's not for everyone but it's massively popular in Ireland and elsewhere.

    Thanks Crawler :)

It is not hugely popular locally ... usually because of the large gap here between the poor and the average user ... poor can't afford the phone, and average user can afford better ... over here, I think the guys in between will like them and teenagers like them too because they can afford them.

Seems impossible to get a battery for, see above, i have one of these running a custom rom, use for gps tracking while running, works great but battery life is not great and i found it hard to text with, although "thick buttons" from the market helped, can be easily unlocked via dcunlockers.com website.

Very well made point on SA rich/poor divide androidZA. Very different drivers and dynamics in your market and vodacom.

On battery life - I have an iPhone, galaxy s and HTC desire. Typically have to charge em every day. But then I am sad and usually have 3G, wifi and GPS hopping :)

I'm busy with the review of it now ... out of all the Android phones I've reviewed, this irritates me the most ... every time I take it out my pocket ... it's either saved new contacts, called someone, sent an sms, or done something else ... I think the buttons on the bottom are too sensitive.

The phone itself is ok though ... though I wouldn't use the swype, it's no where near as easy as the swype on the galaxy s.

    Some custom ROMs available

    845 Mr Edition

    V8 ROM

Looks good, definitely for a second phone, but it looks to be too frustrating to use as a primary phone. Cant decide whether to try it or not :/

Europa - not a fan. And VF sell it too so not being biased. :)

If you're going for a mid range device there are much better options. Happy to advise anyone totally impartially.

Top range: galaxy s, HTC desire HD, or good old iPhone 4.

I'm gonna go for this. I lost my phone a few weeks ago and need to get a new one. Might as well get my first smart phone. It's definitely the right price anyway!

    Thanks op.

Would custom roms improve this a fair bit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Very tempting to get this. With the BeThrifty discount, it is insanely cheap. I wouldn't even dream of using is as my primary phone but might be a little gem for running Android apps like Spotify/Grooveshark, internet radio, Facebook, Twitter etc. Plus existing customers are getting a bit of free credit too.

I have the mr edition rom and it has improved it no end, a lot faster and looks way better, the original vf rom is boring and slow. If it is not going to be your main phone, well worth it at this price.

In the process of purchasing this via bethrifty. It's going to be my only phone. Major upgrade over the ancient phone I've been using. Do you just download the roms and install them? Thanks.

This can not be overstated enough.

The stock Rom on the phone is pure muck, but one of custom Rom's make's it a different phone. Way faster, easier to use, and you can overclock it too. Mine runs at 710MHz, runs great.
