Thousands of Protesters Rioting in London!

Thousands protest in Westminster over Tuition fees
Millbank and Tory HQ overrun by rampaging Rioters
MI5 HQ sealed with police guarding exits
Clegg defends Lib Dem U-turn on hike at PMQs
Cameron: Hike will mean foreign students pay less

Riot police have been drafted in after students protesting about a planned rise in university fees smashed their way into Millbank Tower in central London and started fires outside.

Demonstrators smashed windows to gain entry to the building - which is the headquarters of the Conservative Party - and managed to get onto the roof. Police have warned of concrete being thrown to the ground.

"It was all peaceful - they were just shouting but now there are hundreds outside, smashing the windows, big eight foot windows of the tower have been smashed, there's glass flying everywhere,"

Around 50,000 students and teachers travelled to London for a march and rally in Westminster against the Government's plans to raise fees from £3,290-a-year to up to £9,000.

Thousands made it into the lobby of Millbank Tower next door, throwing smoke bombs, before youths dressed in hoodies and balaclavas smashed through reinforced windows.

Two hours later, the entrance was overrun as riot police fought to regain control. Several protesters and officers were being treated for injuries.

Hundreds also made it inside 30 Millbank, where the Tories are based - many chanting: 'Nick Clegg, we know you, you're a ****ing Tory too.'

Police are blaming a minority of "troublemakers" and have confirmed a number of arrests have been made.

Makes the USI look like pussies, well idealistic pussies anyway because this will probably cause change despite the fact it is the wrong course of action.

    Pesky, meddling students. *shakes fist*

Nothing says progress more than smashing the fùck out of government buildings.

I think Che Guevara T-shirts and Rage Against The Machine products are going to be making the tills ring again :pac:

If it causes change then is it not the right course of action?
    I doubt it will btw

The riot police in london will be closely watched after events in previous public order disturbances where one member of the public died from their injuries.

Although still reakon they'll go in tougher than the guards in dublin.

    from a Guardian reporter's on-the-scene update:

"I can't see this calming any time soon. Someone has just turned up with a drum'n'bass sound-system."

Kind of poetic that rioting eventually comes to the tories doorstep. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch

Apparently the police are doing absolutely nothing. Some lad was smashing the window of the main lobby with a large metal object. Police asked him to stop. He didn't. So they just walked away. Probably don't want to aggravate the situation.

The police were outnumbered. You can be sure that there are hundreds getting shipped into the area right now. Then it will really kick off.

Neither do I but to answer your first question: Morally no, logically yes. I know that I wouldn't be a firm supporter but I would take part unless we had a viable and effective alternative.

It's the last thing the riot police wanted to happen.

Mention of Millbank confused me, that used to be Labour HQ, I forgot they left in hurry in 2002 as they could'nt afford the rent.

Get a few decent tunes out of this thread topic

Thats true ive been watching for the last while. It was kind of startling to see a policemen standing bye and letting them into the building , which is probably wise of them , judging from what i can see. The riot lads have moved in know .

England's police have been scrutinised before in these situations due to various abuse and beatings.

The cops are trying a different tactic knowing that they're dealing with a highly volatile crowd. They go in swinging batons then people will get seriously fùcked up or possibly die.

I imagine they're waiting to have the riot guys fully deployed before trying to contain the crowd under-staffed.

Christ on a bike, that was very poor planning by the Met. Surely they know at this stage that any protest is going to attract yobbo elements?
I think a lot of the students are angry that their protest has been hijacked, and a lot of the people are just milling around out of curiosity.

Quite a few 'shapers' there too-one masked individual just removed his mask to be interviewed live by Sky News FFS-how ridiculous is that?

Whatever morons threw those bricks and fire extinguishers deserve to have their heads split open-you would certainly be looking at brain damage or death if that hit you from 6 stories up. Not clever at all.

Im not sure it is poor planning at all.

I think the police are quite happy to let the anarchists in to to wreck some buidings and start a fight. Then the riot police can respond, and it takes all the attention away from the issue at hand.

All they have talked about on sky and bbc is the violence - nothing at all about the underlying issue. Which of course is exactly what the authorities want. The NUS president was interviewed and was really pissed off as he knows this, and knows that what has happened has undermined his efforts to make a point.

A peach from Labour's Harriet Harman on Nick Clegg's u-turn on university fees

"Like many freshers she said, he had been led astray "by a dodgy man" he met in his first week."

    Pure brilliance.

What more do you need. Some good music, Mars bars, annoy some police, a few fires to sit around and have some beers. Sounds like a perfect night. A takeaway on the way home.

Just seeing more of the footage there, if that idiot hadn't shoved that passer-by at the G-20 protests the cops do what needs to be done, but instead they're afraid to lay a finger on them. Tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets the ****.
