Guy's I got a cold sore for the first time in years - actually only ever had 2 before, both during times of extreme stress - my wedding :D ( after luckily ) and another time I hadn't slept for days ( major product deliverable ).

Anyway - MrsAMerc thinks its because my diet is lacking something and that I maybe am over training ( I doubt b is an issue really but maybe I could do with a break ).

Any idea what I may be deficient in specifically that would cause a cold sore ?

    Thanks

Can you definitely rule out stress at the moment? Cold-sores tend to happen at times of increased stress which affects your immune system.

I used have cold sores every day, for as long as i can remember. It didn't make any sense because i had and have a great diet. Taking L-lysine supplements has totally eradicated them, i would highly recommend it.

The only link I've ever heard of between nutrition and cold sores is lysine, but lysine is found in most high protein foods.

I know you can get it as a supplement, and my bro swears that taking it has prevented the frequency of cold sores for him - have heard similar from a few people, but just anecdotal, so I'm not sure how much this helps.

Well no I can't really because at the moment my 18 month old has us both up a few times a night.
I imagine that's causing me a fair amount of stress and I suppose it always shows in different ways !

I do a fair bit of exercise though and thought I ate well, but this still hasn't stopped me getting a cold sore !

Sometimes they just happen. There can be a shed load of triggers. I wouldn't read too much into it tbh.

    I have one too :(
I get them once a year or more and I know I have it now cause I've been working like a mad thing and getting feckall sleep. My diets been crap too lately, higher in sugary foods than normal which depletes the immune system so for me, high sugar intake and work stress and lack of sleep always lead to a rotton coldsore.

Anyway, today I got L-Lysine as its been recommended to me too. Mentioned it to the nurse at work and she said take two at a time to start off with then ease off to just one a day on an empty stomach. The nutritionist I spoke to today in the health shop said you should try get 2000mg a day so between eating other protein foods and taking the supplements, hopefully it will help.

Hope its not too painful for you. When I was small my mum always made me put purfume on them which stung the bejaysus out of it but she insisted it was to dry it out! Ah the memories. :)
