RHCE Advice

Hi guys,

I want to try to get the RHCE certification over the next couple of months.
I've reasonable Solaris Administration experience and was thinking of doing self study for this since the courses are very expensive.
Just got Red Hat Enterprise 5 installed on my computer.

Can anyone point me towards some good books to help prepare?
Would like to hear peoples experiences if they've attempted this.

Hi GreenHell, haven't set a date yet. Hoping to do it in January or February.
Not sure if RHEL5 or 6 will be on the exam at that stage, will check it out.
Is there major differences between 5 and 6?

Just had a quick look at RHEL6 last week.

Under the hood everything looks pretty much the same but I'd take it for granted there have been some selinux enhancements since RHEL5.

They seemed to have changed the format for this exam....
Rather than doing a combined RHCT/RHCE you now need to do RHCSA first then RHCE...

It was a practical exam, there was no multiple choice questions at all.
Also the man pages and any docs that come with RHEL4 were available to referance during the exam.
It doesn't mater so much how you do stuff, its the results that count.
So if you have a different way of doing stuff then its not a problem.
Also I'm not sure if its still this way but there was a chance to get just the RHCA if you didn't get the RHCE stuff right on the day.

i have very little unix / linux experience but i would like to get a cert and build up my experience. is rhca the way to go?

if so whats the best way to prepare for it ?

i'm planning in doing it myself too,after few others exams!

Looking in to Comptia Linux+,along with playing with some distros on VMs.
There are lots of Video Trainings,ebooks,pdf and so on...

Then,take the big step and go for the RedHat Server...

Hi Mickman, haven't done the exam yet but am signed up for Feb 18th for RHCSA. Its a tough exam from what I've heard, all practical tests. Like fixing broken servers etc.

RHCSA is the first level, this is the exam spec..

The exam is based on on RHEL6

(this is for RHCE on RHEL5 but covers most of the topics )
