I just got an email from Aware with info about their 10k race.

It is on at 10am on Saturday 11 December 2010.
The route is the same as the Great Ireland Run (as PDF)!!

    http://www.aware.ie/get_involved/fundraising/christmas10k/
Online registration closes on Thursday 2 December.

No mention of chip timing or race number collection (you had go to their offices on Lower Leeson St in 2009).

Based on the 9.5km race last year, will not be doing it this year.

if its exactly the same as the great ireland run in april it should be bang on

Will they not post out race numbers to people 'down the country'? I was hoping to drive up from the west on morning of race and certainly could not make it into town in Dublin on the friday evening because of work!

Sorry, I was too quick with that question. Had look at map and it says about race packs being sent out so all should be ok, hopefully!

    It was 8.9km actually.
But they did apologise and I wouldn't expect it to happen again. The planned route has also changed and like seres says, if the are following the Bupa route, it should be quite straightforward to get the distance right.

It'll be bang on 10k, trust me. Last year was a blip, different course aswell. Although the old course was easier, that bupa course is a bastard.

I emailed them a few months ago to ask about the course. The assured me that it would definintly be back to 10k this year. Doesn't matter to you anyway missy you've a half marathon in Waterford that day!

I bet you go sub 40. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr fightin' talk........

Has Waterford been knocked on the head so? Early start for Aware, 10 in the am I think. You'd have to be out of the scratcher at the crack of dawn.

Well i hope to do it but done nothing since the marathon due to a cracked rib so its a wait and see.

As for last year, they owned up the next working day to the distance been wrong on the front page of their website. Didn't see the Irish Runner 4.9 mile race admit their mistake that quick during the summer. Difference is one's a charity, the other isn't.

That in itself is fightin' talk.......Are you laying down some sort of challenge there? Right, handbags at dawn so.

When looking at the results, bear in mind that it was less than 9k last year. So you can add on about 12% to all times.

Yeah thats true...read the posts about the 9K last year..could mean it is one of the better organised ones for this year then????

Ran this 2 years ago. Enjoyed it, good vibe. Problem was there was frost making me run more cautiously than usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭Seres

ive never run a race that early in the morning , think the earliest has been 12 , love running bout an hour after gettin up normally , if its a nice crisp fresh day it'll be lovely running round the phoenix park , granted probably wont notice or remember anything bout the race :p

    Some info here: http://www.aware.ie/get_involved/fundraising/christmas10k/
It's chip timed and same route as GI.
Might be a good opportunity for me to get under 44mins for the first time before I put back on the half stone over Christmas that I lost recently!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

Ran this 2 years ago and it was very well organised. Last year was a bit of a blip which should be addressed. Aware are a very worthy cause and are grateful for any support received. Best of luck to all considering taking part.

And here is a good reason not to register in advance but only in the morning..

How do I collect my race number?
If you live outside Dublin, your race number will be posted out to you about a week before the event. If you live in Dublin, you will need to collect it from the Aware head office at 72 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2 at one of the below times. Race numbers are only available during these times and will not be available on the morning of the run.
    - Saturday December 4th (11am to 4pm)
    - Monday 6th, Tuesday 7th or Wednesday 8th December (10am to 8pm).

Yeah I saw that earlier. Living in Dublin (as I do) I would have absolutely no incentive to prereg if I were going to run this.

Last year I suggested to them that they offer a postal option and that people would probably be willing to pay a few euro to cover the postage.

I think that their biggest concern is the timing chips getting lost in the post and they would have to pay for the lost chips.

Well work near there so no hassle for me really but they should give people the option of a post out or not, esp as the weather is foul until next Wednesday so if you out in the suburbs, it will be tricky to get in to get your number.

Anyone know if this will go ahead on 11th dec? Need to know as I will be going from Galway. Went to Dublin last weekend for RNLI run which was called off.

Met Eireann forecasting cold temps to continue until 17th so I would be surprised if it did go ahead.

I would expect that they would announce a cancellation a few days prior.

I might do this now if it does go ahead. No chance I'll be doing the half next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭central park

I got my number and chip in the post this morning and an email saying that they still hope this race goes ahead. They should know by Wed evening and will notify everyone who has entered by text and email. So here's hoping..!

why's that RQ ? what time do you have to reg sat if it goes ahead ?

Been doing very little running over the last few weeks, well since the Dublin marathon I've done 3 weeks of training 2x25 mile weeks and 1 x 37 mile week the rest have been little to nothing with minor injuries and snow throwing a spanner in the works.

The site doesn't say anything about what time registration closes, if you want to register on the day you're best getting there as early as possible. I'll be there for about 9am probably.

Hope this goes ahead, apparently they'll be making a call on it on Wednesday, looks doubtful which is a shame since it's a big fundraiser for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

I know, they dont want to be leaving it too late but anyone with half a brain would leave it till thursday afternoon and see what sort of a thaw there is. Just saying Wednesday will be no different than today - they may as well call it off now. We seen last year once it starts to thaw it does so very quickly.

Collected my number tonight and was told that the Gardai will make a final call on it on Wednesday night so we should know by Thursday morning by email i guess.

As the thaw isn't meant to start until Thursday morning, i guess they will look at the weather and take a chance and let it go ahead.

Hope it goes ahead as i haven't done anything running wise since the marathon as injury and snow combined to make me do nothing. I want it to go ahead but doubt i'ld be saying that come 10am Saturday morning.

Edit: Just watching the news now, the thaw is going to be a slow one which will mean that ice will last in places over the weekend. Doubt we'll be running if thats right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,473 ✭✭✭Roddy23

Another one here hoping it goes ahead. Running this year has been destroyed thanks to stupid injuries, and this was my comeback. I'd understand their decision to cancel, having run the 9k last year, in what would be nothing like the ice that could potentially be lying on the course this year.

Having not ventured outside in 3 weeks (new baby and the snow) I would be happy with a postponement ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭central park

Yes, thats the story. Just got email from organisers. At least they took the decision in time so people wouldnt travel from outside Dublin. Lots of races being postponed this year. Roll on January 15th!

Well done on the organisers letting people know well in advance. I think they had little choice the way its freezing in Dublin tonight.

Now if the weather would behave itself, i might get some training in for the 15th.
